Nonlinear dynamical aspects of the human sleep EEG.

This article deals with the application of methods from the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems to EEG signals. Theoretical background, mathematical concepts and algorithms for the calculation of "non-linear parameters" are reviewed and influences of the structure of reconstructed data sets on the calculations are pointed out. We present results for the estimation of the correlation dimension D2 and the principal Lyapunov-exponent lambda 1 for sleep EEG data respectively from 10 and 15 healthy subjects corresponding to different sleep stages. The analysis of the stability and numerical simulation of Costas loop circuits for high-frequency signals is a challenging task. The problem lies in the fact that it is necessary to simultaneously observe very fast time scale of the input signals and slow time scale of phase difference between the input signals. Similarity Solutions and Collapse in the Attractive Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

We analyse a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation involving a paraboloidal trap potential in $D$ space dimensions and generalised to a nonlinearity of order $2n+1$. For {\em attractive} coupling constants collapse of the particle density occurs for $Dn\ge 2$ and typically to a $\delta$-function centered at the origin of the trap. By introducing a new dynamical variable for the spherically symmetric solutions we show that all such solutions are self-similar close to the center of the trap. Exact self-similar solutions occur if, and only if, $Dn=2$, and for this case of $Dn=2$ we exhibit an exact but rather special D=1 analytical self-similar solution collapsing to a $\delta$-function which …

Enhancement of charm quark production due to nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP equations

We have studied how parton distributions based on the inclusion of nonlinear scale evolution and constraints from HERA data affect charm production in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 5.5, 8.8 and 14 TeV. We find that, while the resulting enhancement can be substantial, it is very sensitive to the charm quark mass and the scale entering the parton densities and the strong coupling constant.

Role of Disorder on the Dynamics of a Nonlinear Model for DNA Thermal Denaturation

The dynamics of thermal denaturation of DNA is a good example in which nonlinearity coexits with disorder. The amplitude of the motions is so high that bonds break and the base sequence is inhomogeneous since it contains the genetic code. Using a simple nonlinear model, we study the role of local inhomogeneities or of extended disorder on the dynamics of the localized excitations and on the denaturation rate by numerical simulations at constrained temperature. Approximate analytical results are obtained for the trapping of the breatherlike excitations by isolated defects and the statistical mechanics of the disordered molecule.

Variable kinematics models and finite elements for nonlinear analysis of multilayered smart plates

Abstract A variable kinematics approach for moderately large deflection analysis of smart magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates is presented. The approach is based on the condensation of the electro-magnetic state into the plate kinematics, whose nonlinear strain–displacement relationships are expressed in the von Karman sense. Supply chain modelling and analysis: an application of Latin square to a repeated coupling of non-linear differential equations

In the last 50 years, Forrester’s system dynamics techniques have been adopted to analyse problems and find solutions for global supply chains. An important topic in production-inventory system modelling is the design of experiment. The aim of this paper is to present an application of a statistical technique of design of experiment, the Latin Square Design, to set a combination of input values for the initial-value problem of non-linear repeated coupling of first-order differential equations modelling a production-inventory system. This design permits to reduce the number of experiments while allowing statistical analysis for testing the significance of the studied parameters.

Influence of spatial delay on the modulational instability in a composite system with a controllable nonlinearity.

A theoretical investigation of the modulational instability (MI) in a composite system with a nonlocal response function is presented. A composite system of silver nanoparticles in acetone is chosen, whose nonlinearity can be delicately varied by controlling the volume fraction of the constituents, thus enabling the possibility of nonlinearity management. A pump-probe counterpropagation configuration has been assumed, and the interplay between the competing nonlinearities and the nonlocalities in the MI dynamics is systematically explored.
