Brownian dynamics simulations of colloidal hard spheres. Effects of sample dimensionality on self-diffusion

1994

The self-diffusion coefficients of colloidal hard spheres were determined by Brownian dynamics (BD) computer simulations using a new efficient algorithm for treatment of the hard-sphere interactions. Calculations were done on an Apple PC type MacIIcx and on a Micro VAX 3000, considering samples in two and three dimensions at varying particle concentrations. Our results in three dimensions are compared with experimental results from our own group which were obtained by forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS), and with numerical results from a dynamical Monte Carlo simulation by Cichocki and Hinsen. Good agreement with the latter was found for particle volume fractions up to 0.40. Differences in the…

Multivalued solutions for the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator and stability analysis

2007

The analysis of pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity for a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator reveals two domains of multivalued solutions for sufficiently large coupling strength ensured by the crystal. We show that even in a strictly degenerate case the nonzero output intensity can be reached in a broad range of pump ratios r from 10−6 to infinity, including the interval where both pump intensities coincide or are very close to each other. This does not contradict the existence of the known gap in the oscillation threshold near the equal intensities of two pump waves: in this particular region the oscillation is not self-starting. The output intensities for frequency…

Thermodynamic approach of statistical nonlinear optics

2009

The coherence properties of random nonlinear optical fields can be described in detail by thermodynamic arguments based on the wave turbulence theory. We shall review recent progress on this kinetic approach of statistical nonlinear optics.

2018

In this manuscript, we experimentally and numerically investigate the chaotic dynamics of the state-of-polarization in a nonlinear optical fiber due to the cross-interaction between an incident signal and its intense backward replica generated at the fiber-end through an amplified reflective delayed loop. Thanks to the cross-polarization interaction between the two-delayed counter-propagating waves, the output polarization exhibits fast temporal chaotic dynamics, which enable a powerful scrambling process with moving speeds up to 600-krad/s. The performance of this all-optical scrambler was then evaluated on a 10-Gbit/s On/Off Keying telecom signal achieving an error-free transmission. We a…

Collective Effects in Random Sequential Adsorption of Diffusing Hard Squares

1992

We study by Monte Carlo computer simulations random sequential adsorption (RSA) with diffusional relaxation, of lattice hard squares in two dimensions. While for RSA without diffusion the coverage approaches its maximum jamming value (large-time fractional coverage) exponentially, added diffusion allows the deposition process to proceed to the full coverage. The approach to the full coverage is consistent with the t**(-1/2) power law reminiscent of the equilibrium cluster coarsening in models with nonconserved order-parameter dynamics.

Nonlinear thermovoltage and thermocurrent in quantum dots

2013

Quantum dots are model systems for quantum thermoelectric behavior because of their ability to control and measure the effects of electron-energy filtering and quantum confinement on thermoelectric properties. Interestingly, nonlinear thermoelectric properties of such small systems can modify the efficiency of thermoelectric power conversion. Using quantum dots embedded in semiconductor nanowires, we measure thermovoltage and thermocurrent that are strongly nonlinear in the applied thermal bias. We show that most of the observed nonlinear effects can be understood in terms of a renormalization of the quantum-dot energy levels as a function of applied thermal bias and provide a theoretical m…

Transport properties of quantum dots in the Wigner molecule regime

2009

The transport properties of quantum dots with up to N=7 electrons ranging from the weak to the strong interacting regime are investigated via the projected Hartree-Fock technique. As interactions increase radial order develops in the dot, with the formation of ring and centered-ring structures. Subsequently, angular correlations appear, signalling the formation of a Wigner molecule state. We show striking signatures of the emergence of Wigner molecules, detected in transport. In the linear regime, conductance is exponentially suppressed as the interaction strength grows. A further suppression is observed when centered-ring structures develop, or peculiar spin textures appear. In the nonline…

Chaotic Cyclotron and Hall Trajectories Due to Spin-Orbit Coupling

2020

We demonstrate that the synergistic effect of a gauge field, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and Zeeman splitting can generate chaotic cyclotron and Hall trajectories of particles. The physical origin of the chaotic behavior is that the SOC produces a spin-dependent (so-called anomalous) contribution to the particle velocity and the presence of Zeeman field reduces the number of integrals of motion. By using analytical and numerical arguments, we study the conditions of chaos emergence and report the dynamics both in the regular and chaotic regimes. {We observe the critical dependence of the dynamic patterns (such as the chaotic regime onset) on small variations in the initial conditions …

Nonlinear Dynamics of Topological Ferromagnetic Textures for Frequency Multiplication

2020

We propose that the non-linear radio-frequency dynamics and nanoscale size of topological magnetic structures associated to their well-defined internal modes advocate for their use as in-materio scalable frequency multipliers for spintronic systems. Frequency multipliers allow for frequency conversion between input and output frequencies, and thereby significantly increase the range of controllably accessible frequencies. In particular, we explore the excitation of eigenmodes of topological magnetic textures by fractions of the corresponding eigenfrequencies. We show via micromagnetic simulations that low-frequency perturbations to the system can efficiently excite bounded modes with a high…
