New structures in the theory of the laser model. II. Microscopic dynamics and a nonequilibrium entropy principle

1998

In a recent article, Alli and Sewell [J. Math. Phys. 36, 5598 (1995)] formulated a new version of the Dicke-Hepp-Lieb laser model in terms of quantum dynamical semigroups, and thereby extended the macroscopic picture of the model. In the present article, we complement that picture with a corresponding microscopic one, which carries the following new results. (a) The local microscopic dynamics of the model is piloted by the classical, macroscopic field, generated by the collective action of its components; (b) the global state of the system carries no correlations between its constituent atoms after transient effects have died out; and (c) in the latter situation, the state of the system at …

Irreversible work versus fidelity susceptibility for infinitesimal quenches

2016

We compare the irreversible work produced in an infinitesimal sudden quench of a quantum system at zero temperature with its ground state fidelity susceptibility, giving an explicit relation between the two quantities. We find that the former is proportional to the latter but for an extra term appearing in the irreversible work which includes also contributions from the excited states. We calculate explicitly the two quantities in the case of the quantum Ising chain, showing that at criticality they exhibit different scaling behaviors. The irreversible work, rescaled by square of the quench’s amplitude, exhibits a divergence slower than that of the fidelity susceptibility. As a consequence…

Spherical random-field systems with long-range interactions: general results and application to the Coulomb glass

1993

A classical spherical random-field Hamiltonian with long-range (power-law) interactions is investigated by means of the replica theory. Both ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions are considered. The use of continuous variables instead of Ising variables in the spherical version of the model allows one to calculate the free energy exactly. The existence of an equilibrium phase transition is investigated based on the replica-symmetric solution. The results are applied to the Coulomb-glass model of interacting localized electrons in a disordered solid. This model is shown not to have an equilibrium phase transition for spatial dimensions D 4 the model has a phase transition to an o…

Search for admixture of scalar top quarks in the tt¯ lepton + jets final state at s=1.96 TeV

2009

A search for pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark is performed in the lepton+jets channel using 0.9 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment. Kinematic differences between scalar top quark pair production and the dominant top quark pair production background are used to separate the two processes. First limits from Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider for the scalar top quark decaying to a chargino and a b quark are obtained for scalar top quark masses of 130-190 GeV and chargino masses of 90-150 GeV.

Optical Bloch-mode-induced quasi phase matching of quadratic interactions in one-dimensional photonic crystals

2004

We examine in detail the quasi-phase-matching process obtained as a stationary modulation of the fundamental field at the band edge of a finite one-dimensional photonic crystal. The treatment is carried out in terms of the structure Bloch waves and fully explains the behavior of second-harmonic generation in the grating. An integrated microstructured AlGaAs mesa waveguide is proposed that gives efficient second-harmonic and difference-frequency generation in virtue of the combined presence of a periodic modulation of the fundamental-field amplitude and of the photonic bandgap edge.

Dispersion-to-spectrum mapping in nonlinear fibers based on optical wave-breaking

2013

In this work we recognize new strategies involving optical wave-breaking for controlling the output pulse spectrum in nonlinear fibers. To this end, first we obtain a constant of motion for nonlinear pulse propagation in waveguides derived from the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In a second phase, using the above conservation law we theoretically analyze how to transfer in a simple manner the group-velocity-dispersion curve of the waveguide to the output spectral profile of pulsed light. Finally, the computation of several output spectra corroborates our proposition.

Effective kink-kink interaction in a one-dimensional model mediated by phonon exchange

1994

The general 1D double-well model with anharmonic interaction is considered in the displacive limit. Expansion of the Hamiltonian around a multikink state results in a phonon-kink Hamiltonian. It is shown that at rather low temperatures and short wave lengths the phonon-kink interaction can be treated in Born approximation, leading to a decomposition of the multikink-phonon Hamiltionian. Elimination of the phonons results in an effective potential for the kink-kink interaction, which corresponds to the one-dimensional analog of the RKKY interaction. This long-range interaction is inherent only for models with anharmonic on-site potentials and not in case of a double-parabola model.

Experimental Analysis of Passive Intermodulation at Waveguide Flange Bolted Connections

2007

[EN] In this paper, the generation of passive intermodulation at rectangular waveguide flange bolted connections is investigated. An exhaustive series of tests has been performed in order to provide understanding on the physics lying behind such a phenomenon. In particular, the intermodulation response of the system has been studied as a function of the applied torque to the flange screws. It has been found that, in some situations, the intermodulation response differs from its expected behavior. An interpretation of such discrepancies is given, and practical guidelines for the design of waveguide flanges free of passive intermodulation are provided as well.

Modulational instability and critical regime in a highly birefringent fiber

1996

We report experimental observations of modulational instability of copropagating waves in a highly birefringent fiber for the normal dispersion regime. We first investigate carefully the system behavior by means of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations and phase-matching conditions, and then, experimentally, we use two distinct techniques for observing MI (modulational instability) in the fiber; namely, the single-frequency copropagation, where two pump waves of identical frequency copropagate with orthogonal polarizations parallel to the two birefringence axes of the fiber, and the two-frequency copropagation, where the two polarized waves copropagate with different frequencies. In both cases …
