Summary We describe an 18-month-old boy with multifocal scalp defects over the posterior parietal region combined with an underlying defect of the skull, left lower limb distal hemimelia and generalized cutis marmorata telangiectatica, consistent with a diagnosis of Adams–Oliver syndrome (aplasia cutis congenita with distal transverse limb defects).

We report on a pure duplication of the proximal chromosome 2q in a 6.5-year-old boy with V-shaped midline cleft palate and bifid uvula, posteriorly located tongue, and micrognathia (Pierre Robin sequence), celiac disease, failure to thrive, and developmental delay. Cytogenetic and FISH analysis indicated a duplication of chromosome 2q13-q22. In general, pure proximal duplication or triplication of 2q is rare. Developmental dissociation between visual and auditory repetition priming: The role of input lexicons

Contrasting theories posit the source of verbal repetition priming in the activation of preexisting memory representations in the input lexicons or, alternatively, in the formation of new episodic memory traces. The two hypotheses predict different outcomes from the comparison of developmental rates of visual and auditory verbal repetition priming. The activation theory predicts a developmental dissociation between the early maturation of auditory priming and the later maturation of visuo-verbal priming, contingent upon the discrepant acquisition rates of the auditory and visual input lexicons. Holoprosencephaly: examples of clinical variability and etiologic heterogeneity.

Clinical variability and causal heterogeneity of holoprosencephaly is discussed in relation to several newborn infants with cyclopia (cases 4,5,6), cebocephaly (cases 2,3), and premaxillary agenesis (case 1). In subjects with holoprosencephaly, the presence of multiple malformations is an indicator of concomitant chromosome aberrations, as in present case 1 (Down syndrome) and case 3 (trisomy 13). Cases 5 and 6 are two monozygotic twins with the same type of cyclopia and alobar holoprosencephaly recognized by prenatal ultrasonography. Abstract This second part of practical Guidelines related to Kawasaki disease (KD) has the goal of contributing to prompt diagnosis and most appropriate treatment of KD resistant forms and cardiovascular complications, including non-pharmacologic treatments, follow-up, lifestyle and prevention of cardiovascular risks in the long-term through a set of 17 recommendations. Guidelines, however, should not be considered a norm that limits the treatment options of pediatricians and practitioners, as treatment modalities other than those recommended may be required as a result of peculiar medical circumstances, patient’s condition, and disease severity or individual complications.

Spectrum of congenital anomalies in pregnancies with pregestational diabetes

BACKGROUND Maternal pregestational diabetes is a well-known risk factor for congenital anomalies. This study analyses the spectrum of congenital anomalies associated with maternal diabetes using data from a large European database for the population-based surveillance of congenital anomalies. METHODS: Data from 18 population-based EUROCAT registries of congenital anomalies in 1990-2005. All malformed cases occurring to mothers with pregestational diabetes (diabetes cases) were compared to all malformed cases in the same registry areas to mothers without diabetes (non-diabetes cases). Nuclear localization of the protein encoded by the Wilms’ tumor gene WT1 in embryonic and adult tissues

ABSTRACT The human Wilms’ tumor gene WT1 encodes a putative transcription factor implicated in tumorigenesis and in specifying normal urogenital development. We have studied the distribution of WT1 protein and mRNA using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Monoclonal antibodies were raised against a peptide specific to the first alternative splice site of WT1. Two antibodies specifically reacted on Western blot to this WT1 isoform. Immunofluorescence localized WT1 protein to podocytes during mesonephric and metanephric development.
