NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) has been widely used to monitor vegetation changes since the early eighties. On the other hand, little use has been made of land surface temperatures (LST), due to their sensitivity to the orbital drift which affects the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) platforms flying AVHRR sensor. Monitoring desertification and land degradation over sub-Saharan Africa

A desertification monitoring system is developed that uses four indicators derived using continental-scale remotely sensed data: vegetation cover, rain use efficiency (RUE), surface run-off and soil erosion. These indicators were calculated on a dekadal time step for 1996. Vegetation cover was estimated using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The estimation of RUE also employed NDVI and, in addition, rainfall derived from Meteosat cold cloud duration data. Conventional two-band vegetation indices based on red and near-infrared relationships such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) are well known to suffer from saturation at moderate-to-high LAI values (3–5). In a previous work, Antoine and I (1994) have discussed a general procedure which 'projects' arbitrary orthonormal bases of L2(R) into orthonormal bases of the lowest Landau level. In this paper, we apply this procedure to a certain number of examples, with particular attention to the spline bases. We also discuss Haar, Littlewood-Paley and Journe bases.
On the Pricing and Hedging of Options on Commodity Forward and Futures Contracts - A Note

In recent years there appeared some organized markets for forward contracts and options on these contracts. In this paper we review shortly the organization of trade on a centralized forward market. Assuming a friction-free market with constant interest rate we build a consistent continuous time framework for the valuation and hedging of options on a forward or a futures contract. This framework takes into account the peculiarities of a forward/futures contract. In our framework we consider the pricing and hedging of options on a forward contract and reconsider the Black-76 model for the pricing and hedging of options on a futures contract.
Determination of anti GAD65 autoantibodies with an ELISA before and after standardization with the new international reference serum

The serum of a stiff-man syndrome patient was declared international GAD reference standard at the "1st GAD Antibody Workshop" held at the "12th International Immunology and Diabetes Workshop" in Orlando, Florida, USA 1993. A comparative study was performed with 123 diabetic and non-diabetic patients to evaluate whether standardization of this reference serum had changed the properties of a commercially available ELISA assay. All samples classified positive with the old test were confirmed with the new assay. Four additional samples with high "normal" values became positive with the new test.
