Increased autophagy and apoptosis contribute to muscle atrophy in a myotonic dystrophy type 1 Drosophila model

2015

ABSTRACT Muscle mass wasting is one of the most debilitating symptoms of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) disease, ultimately leading to immobility, respiratory defects, dysarthria, dysphagia and death in advanced stages of the disease. In order to study the molecular mechanisms leading to the degenerative loss of adult muscle tissue in DM1, we generated an inducible Drosophila model of expanded CTG trinucleotide repeat toxicity that resembles an adult-onset form of the disease. Heat-shock induced expression of 480 CUG repeats in adult flies resulted in a reduction in the area of the indirect flight muscles. In these model flies, reduction of muscle area was concomitant with increased apopto…

Motor Cortex Function in Fibromyalgia: A Study by Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

2019

Previous studies indicated changes of motor cortex excitability in fibromyalgia (FM) patients and the positive results of transcranial stimulation techniques. The present study aimed to explore the metabolism of motor cortex in FM patients, in resting state and during slow and fast finger tapping, using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), an optical method which detects in real time the metabolism changes in the cortical tissue. We studied 24 FM patients and 24 healthy subjects. We found a significant slowness of motor speed in FM patients compared to controls. During resting state and slow movement conditions, the metabolism of the motor areas was similar between groups. The oxy…

C1,α regularity for the normalized p-Poisson problem

2017

We consider the normalized p -Poisson problem − Δ N p u = f in Ω ⊂ R n . The normalized p -Laplacian Δ N p u := | Du | 2 − p Δ p u is in non-divergence form and arises for example from stochastic games. We prove C 1 ,α loc regularity with nearly optimal α for viscosity solutions of this problem. In the case f ∈ L ∞ ∩ C and p> 1 we use methods both from viscosity and weak theory, whereas in the case f ∈ L q ∩ C , q> max( n, p 2 , 2), and p> 2 we rely on the tools of nonlinear potential theory peerReviewed

Perlman syndrome: Clinical report and nine-year follow-up

2005

We present the clinical and follow-up data of a female infant with Perlman syndrome from birth to the age of 9 years. Main features of Perlman syndrome include polyhydramnios, fetal overgrowth, neonatal macrosomia, macrocephaly, dysmorphic facial features, visceromegaly, nephroblastomatosis, and a predisposition for Wilm's tumor. In our patient, the nephromegaly with nephroblastomatosis was not present at birth or during the neonatal period; it became evident in the first months of postnatal life. A Wilm's tumor was diagnosed when she was about 1 year old. Long term follow-up documents the natural history of Perlman syndrome and allows us to establish the long-term prognosis of the affected…

SEX WORK IS (ALSO) A MALE THING. The long journey towards legitimisation

2022

This chapter aims at re- shaping the representations, theories, rhetoric, organisation, and types of male sex work as a complex, uncomfortable, and controversial phenomenon located at the crossroads of masculinity and socio- sexual change – something in between traditional models, new configurations, and new normativities.

Review of Abnormal Self-Knowledge in Major Depressive Disorder

2019

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder that is harmful to both physical and mental health. Abnormal self-knowledge, which refers to abnormal judgments about oneself, is a core symptom of depression. However, little research has summarized how and why patients with MDD differ from healthy individuals in terms of self-knowledge. Objective: To gain a better understanding of MDD, we reviewed previous studies that focused on the behavioral and neurological changes of self-knowledge in this illness. Main Findings: On the behavioral level, depressed individuals exhibited negative self-knowledge in an explicit way, while more heterogeneous patterns were reported in imp…
