Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing in one-dimensional optical lattices

2008

Spin-polarized attractive Fermi gases in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices are expected to be remarkably good candidates for the observation of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We model these systems with an attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance. By means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we compute the pairing correlations as well as the static spin and charge structure factors in the whole range from weak to strong coupling. We demonstrate that pairing correlations exhibit quasi-long-range order and oscillations at the wave number expected from the FFLO theory. However, we also show by numerically computing the mixed spin-charge static …

Supersolid-superfluid phase separation in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

2021

Recent studies have suggested a new phase in the extended Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension at integer filling [1,2]. In this work, we show that this new phase is phase-separated into a supersolid and superfluid part, generated by mechanical instability. Numerical simulations are performed by means of the density matrix renormalization group algorithm in terms of matrix product states. In the phase-separated phase and the adjacent homogeneous superfluid and supersolid phases, we find peculiar spatial patterns in the entanglement spectrum and string-order correlation functions and show that they survive in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we demonstrate that the elementary excitatio…

Exact Numerical Treatment of Finite Quantum Systems Using Leading-Edge Supercomputers

2005

Using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques a finite-size scaling study in the context of the Peierls-insulator Mott-insulator transition is presented. Program implementation on modern supercomputers and performance aspects are discussed.

Turbulent Superfluid Profiles in a Counterflow Channel

2010

We have developed a two-dimensional model of quantised vortices in helium II moving under the influence of applied normal fluid and superfluid in a counterflow channel. We predict superfluid and vortex-line density profiles which could be experimentally tested using recently developed visualization techniques.

Trapped Rydberg ions: A new platform for quantum information processing

2020

Abstract In this chapter, we present an overview of experiments with trapped Rydberg ions and outline the advantages and challenges of developing applications of this new platform for quantum computing, sensing, and simulation. Trapped Rydberg ions feature several important properties, unique in their combination: they are tightly bound in a harmonic potential of a Paul trap, in which their internal and external degrees of freedom can be controlled in a precise fashion. High fidelity state preparation of both internal and motional states of the ions has been demonstrated, and the internal states have been employed to store and manipulate qubit information. Furthermore, strong dipolar intera…

Dynamics and topological mass of skyrmionic spin structures (presentation video)

2014

Skyrmions are topologically protected particle-like configurations, with a topological complexity described by their Skyrmion number. In magnetic systems, they have been numerically predicted to exhibit rich dynamics, such as the gyrotropic and breathing modes, dominated by their topology. Recent experimental advances brought their static manipulation well under control. However, their dynamical behaviour is largely unexplored experimentally. In this work, we provide with the first direct observation of eigenmode skyrmion dynamics. In particular, we present dynamical imaging data with high temporal and spatial resolution to demonstrate the GHz gyrotropic mode of a single skyrmion bubble, as…

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov solution of the pairing Hamiltonian in finite nuclei

2013

We present an overview of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory of nucleonic superfluidity for finite nuclei. After introducing basic concepts related to pairing correlations, we show how the correlated pairs are incorporated into the HFB wave function. Thereafter, we present derivation and structure of the HFB equations within the superfluid nuclear density functional formalism and discuss several aspects of the theory, including the unitarity of the Bogoliubov transformation in truncated single-particle and quasiparticle spaces, form of the pairing functional, structure of the HFB continuum, regularization and renormalization of pairing fields, and treatment of pairing in systems with …

Phase transitions in polymer blends and block copolymer melts: Some recent developments

2005

The classical concepts about unmixing of polymer blends (Flory-Huggins theory) and about mesophase ordering in block copolymers (Leibler's theory) are briefly reviewed and their validity is discussed in the light of recent experiments, computer simulations and other theoretical concepts. It is emphasized that close to the critical point of unmixing non-classical critical exponents of the Ising universality class are observed, in contrast to the classical mean-field exponents implied by the Flory-Huggins theory. The temperature range of this non-mean-field behavior can be understood by Ginzburg criteria. The latter are also useful to discuss the conditions under which the linearized (Cahn-li…

Congenital heart defects in newborns with apparently isolated single gastrointestinal malformation: A retrospective study.

2015

Abstract Background Congenital gastrointestinal system malformations/abdominal wall defects (GISM) may appear as isolated defects (single or complex), or in association with multiple malformations. The high incidence of association of GISM and congenital heart defects (CHD) in patients with syndromes and malformative sequences is known, but less expected is the association of apparently isolated single GISM and CHD. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of CHD in newborns with isolated GISM, and the possibility to modify the diagnostic-therapeutic approach just before the onset of cardiac symptoms or complications. Methods Anamnestic, clinical, and imaging data of newborns …
