Human rights, democracy and the rule of law are considered to be the foundations of the normative order of modern societies (Habermas, 1996). Terms of abuse as expression and reinforcement of cultures

In this study terms of abuse are investigated in 11 different cultures, Spontaneous verbal aggression is to a certain extent reminiscent of the values of a certain culture. Almost 3000 subjects from Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Croatia, Poland, Great Britain, USA, Norway, Greece, and The Netherlands were asked to write down terms of abuse that they would use given a certain stimulus situation, and in addition, to give their rating of the offensive character of those terms. EX-ANTE AND EX-POST MEASUREMENT OF EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY IN HEALTH: A NORMATIVE DECOMPOSITION

This paper proposes and discusses two different approaches to the definition of inequality in health: the ex-ante and the ex-post approach. It proposes strategies for measuring inequality of opportunity in health based on the path-independent Atkinson equality index. The proposed methodology is illustrated using data from the British Household Panel Survey; the results suggest that in the period 2000–2005, at least one-third of the observed health equalities in the UK were equalities of opportunity. How is it possible to regard something that is not prohibited, as illegal? What are the resulting consequences of fact and law? This chapter suggests that a reasonable way to reconcile these two assertions is to admit that they refer to two profiles of the phenomenon in question that must be kept separate. Independence is not prohibited, but not all means to reach it are allowed under general international law.
