Anglicisms in Tourism Language Corpora 2.0

2015

Abstract The world of tourism has evolved in recent times because of the impact of the Internet. Tourism enterprises have expanded their commercial point of view and have found a faster way to reach clients through increased tourism advertising on the Web. Along with this increase in advertising are the opportunities to study the lexicon of tourism. One of the main points in this lexicon is the use of foreign words, especially the use of Anglicisms due to English's status as a universal language in these contexts. In this article, we will study the Anglicisms in Spanish tourism from these points of view: • why these words are used; • in what context they are used; • if we use original forei…

07. Social freedom in contemporary capitalism: A reconstruction of Axel Honneth’s normative approach to the economy

2015

This paper discusses two related issues, namely how to adequately describe the economy within the framework of a critical social theory, and how to understand the interrelation between the socio-economic and political dimensions of democracy. Concerning the first issue Honneth stresses the moral quality of social integration, and concerning the second issue he develops a conception of ‘democratic Sittlichkeit.’ In reconstructing these issues, both the promises and problems of Honneth’s work for analyzing and criticizing contemporary developments in the economy are explored. The paper concludes that the unresolved challenge for Honneth is not to succumb to a nostalgic return to 19th century …

Managing Invisibility: Theoretical and Practical Contestations to Disrespect

2021

By aiming at the recognition of normative claims contained in affective reactions to disrespect or social suffering, Recognition Theory points—at least implicitly—also toward the visibilization of groups and individuals who suffer from disrespect. Social invisibilization is therefore understood as hindering recognition and impeding even the perception of legitimate normative claims. However, since Foucault we also know that visibilization could be a mechanism of control and domination, thus pointing to a form of disrespect as the opposite of recognition. In this chapter the diverse forms of migrants struggle for recognition will be analyzed with regard to the question how these struggles ne…

The Regulatory State vs. the Networked Polity: confronting narratives of change

2014

The aim of the article is to summarize and reassess the innovations brought about by governance theory. It is argued that the notion of governance is a conceptual device that could help rationalise and articulate the changes undertaken by liberal democracies since the late 1970s. The article suggests the need to distinguish between two distinct research programmes composing governance studies, which are influenced by alternative epistemic traditions—political economy and economic sociology. Rationalizations of change influenced by political economy support the idea that the outcome of recent political change is a market-oriented “Regulatory State”, while those influence by economic sociolog…

Morton White’s philosophy of culture: Holistic pragmatism and interdisciplinary inquiry

2011

Abstract This paper explicates and defends Morton White’s holistic pragmatism, the view that descriptive and normative statements form a “seamless web” which must be tested as a “unified whole”. This position, originally formulated as a methodological and epistemic principle, can be extended into a more general philosophy of culture, as White himself has shown in his book, A Philosophy of Culture (2002). On the basis of holistic pragmatism, the paper also offers a pragmatist conception of metaphilosophy and defends the need for interdisciplinary inquiry.

Demokratisches Institutionendesign in der Priorisierung und Rationierung von Gesundheitsleistungen

2012

Decisions on priority setting and rationing in health care have both informational and distributional aspects, which is why they require expert knowledge and specialised bodies on the one hand and democratic consent on the other hand. The paper presents normative criteria for the evaluation and empirical categories for the description and comparison of respective bodies. As procedural decisions always have implications for resulting distributional decisions, the bodies charged with priority setting and rationing decisions must be subject to democratic institutional design. The role of negative and positive forms of power in supporting CSR alignment and commitment between large firms and SMEs

2018

Do large firms exert power to shape the CSR behavior of their SME partners?” We answer this question by proposing a model built on the stakeholder theory and the shareholder theory, and go on to explain how this impact influences the commitment of the SME towards their large partner. The model highlights the central role that different forms of power exercised by the large firm play in the process. A survey of 291 SMEs confirms the key hypotheses, including the mediating role of reward power. The effects of coercive power are noteworthy and they illustrate the complex and competing forces at play in influencing CSR behavioral change in SMEs. The research makes a novel contribution to practi…
