Discussing the Concepts of Cluster and Industrial District
2016
The significance and popularity of the cluster and industrial district concepts claim for a deeper reflection. The analysis of one of the European Commission’s (EC) policy documents shows inconsistencies that do not impede the formulation of normative statements. That way we answer the question of why and how cluster ideas have substituted industrial district principles and the consequences derived from that phenomenon.
A normative ‘due process’ in the creation of States through secession
2006
The choice and/or the balancing between effectivess and legality in the creation of States is, today, one of the most hotly debated issues in the international legal scholarship. Should a state-like entity formed in breach of the peremptory norm prohibiting the use of force or of the principle of self-determination (not) be considered as a State for the purposes of international law? The answer differs according to what theoretical premises are adopted. For those who believe that the State is a social person, and its creation basically a historical occurrence, the law cannot cancel its very existence. On the other hand, if State-creation is also a matter of law, one might agree that “[a]n a…
Firstborns buy better for the greater good: Birth order differences in green consumption values
2022
Despite multiple studies on the role of birth order in shaping human personality, marketing literature has largely neglected its role in shaping consumer behavior. We conducted a high-powered birth-order study on several consumption-related measures (Nmain analyses = 1358), which consistently enabled us to detect effect sizes even smaller than d = 0.20 with a power of 0.90. Participants filled out scales measuring susceptibility to normative interpersonal influence, the need for uniqueness, and the tendency to express the value of environmental protection through purchases and consumption behaviors. At a general level, we did not find any support for the notion that firstborns (vs. laterbor…

Recognising forced migrants in transnational social work
2018
PurposeNation states’ neoliberal policies do not regard asylum seekers and undocumented migrants as deserving of a good life. Social work in welfare states is highly connected to the policies of nation states. There is a need to address theories in social work that have a transnational focus at the local level. Axel Honneth’s recognition theory enables an approach to forced migration from the direction of personal relations and personhood itself. The core idea is that if people cannot gain recognition, this causes harm to their self-realisation. The purpose of this paper is discuss how the recognition theory overcomes a national focus in social work.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is …
Normative Legal Positivism, Neutrality, and the Rule of Law
2013
Usually, in jurisprudential debates what is discussed under the rubric of ‘neutrality’ is the claim that jurisprudence is (or at least can, and should be) a conceptual, or descriptive - thus, non-normative, or morally neutral - inquiry. I discuss neutrality in an altogether different sense, namely, neutrality as an ethico-political ideal the law should meet. My starting point is normative legal positivism, or the claim that it is a good and desirable thing that the laws have easily identifiable, readily accessible, as far as possible non-controversial social sources. What justifies normative legal positivism, I claim, is the value - or the ideal - of neutrality, suitably understood. I.e., w…
Contending legitimations
2010
Purpose“Contending legitimations” (Meyer and Scott) in cities – and especially multiple conflicting institutional pressures on decision makers – have not received sufficient accounting study. Therefore this paper aims to analyse the multiple institutional pressures on the performance measurement (PM) practices of two Finnish cities and answer why the developments and the coupling of budget or PM rules and routines were different in these relatively similar case cities.Design/methodology/approachIn this interpretive study, a comparative case setting (e.g. including several semi‐structured interviews) was used.FindingsContending legitimations affect the coupling of city budgeting and PM rules…
The Concept of Value for CSR: A Debate Drawn from Italian Classical Accounting
2017
This paper underlines the importance of the concept of value for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and then explores it beyond economics, looking for its social and philosophical roots. Considering the most recent literature on the matter, the dilemma between a non-monetary, multi-variable conception and a monetary, one-variable conception is set. To obtain the origins of the meaning for this basic concept in CSR, Italian literature regarding ‘value in accounting’ is explored. The main result from this first survey is the existence of a ‘chain’ from the highest conception of value (philosophical, ethical), to the most practical conception (accounting techniques of measurement). By this …
Arab women managers and identity formation through clothing
2009
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore how Arab women managers construct their social identities through the meanings they ascribe to their clothing while pursuing managerial careers.Design/methodology/approachAn interview‐based qualitative approach is adopted for describing the meanings that the United Arab Emirates national women managers give to their clothing.FindingsThis paper identifies multiple coexisting identities in Arab women pursuing managerial careers. While the contradiction is found in the identity as a woman and as a manager, the normative dimensions of identity formation such as being a Muslim and an Emirati serve as enhancing for women's gendered managerial identit…
