Molecular simulation studies of water physisorption in zeolites

2006

We report a series of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations of water adsorption in NaY and NaX faujasite, as well as in silicalite-1. Computed adsorption isotherms and heats of adsorption were in good agreement with the available experiments. The existence of cyclic water hexamers in NaX located in the 12-ring windows, recently disclosed by neutron diffraction experiments (Hunger et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2006, 110, 342-353) was reproduced in our simulations. Interestingly enough, such cyclic hexamer clusters were also observed in the case of NaY, in which no stabilizing cation is present in the 12-ring window. We also report cation redistribution upon water adsorption for sodium faujasit…

A novel thermodynamic approach for the complexation study of toxic metal cations by a landfill leachate

2018

Landfill leachates can contaminate nearby aquifers. The hazards deriving from this contamination also depend on the chemical speciation of various contaminants. A novel approach is proposed here to face this problem from a chemical thermodynamics point of view. The complexing ability of the soluble fraction of a landfill leachate (collected from Bellolampo, Palermo, Italy) towards Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ has been investigated at T = 298.15 K in NaClaq at I = 0.1 mol dm−3. The soluble fraction of the landfill leachate was first characterized by different analytical techniques. Then, its acid–base properties were studied by ISE-H+ potentiometric titrations and modelled by the so-called diprotic-l…

Hydrothermal growth mechanism of SnO2 nanorods in aqueous HCl

2018

Abstract Rutile-type nanorods of SnO2 were obtained in a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis starting from SnCl4·5H2O and HCl in a temperature range between 200 and 240°C. Although the nanorods are polydisperse, the average length of the nanorods could be adjusted from 13 to 65 nm by varying of the reaction temperature. The resulting anisotropic nanocrystals were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), (high resolution-) transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The particle growth proceeds via a dissolution-recrystallization process with soluble [SnCl5(H2O)]− intermediates, as confirmed by PXRD, Raman spectroscopy, and magic angle spi…

Physical origin of Na+/Cl− selectivity of tight junctions between epithelial cells. Nonlocal electrostatic approach

2020

Abstract Tight junctions (TJs) of epithelial cells play a key role in regulation of the ion exchange between NaCl solutions separated by the layer of these cells. Their functioning is based on a strong difference in the permeabilities of these channels for Na+ and Cl− ion migrational fluxes owing to specific properties of the protein network inside TJs. It has been assumed in this study that this phenomenon originates from combination of two effects related to this specific TJ protein (claudin) which segments are partially located inside the TJ space. First, their ionogenic groups create a negative charge distributed inside TJs, thus inducing a difference between the Na+ and Cl− concentrati…

Tailored syntheses of nanostructured silicas: Control of particle morphology, particle size and pore size

1998

Ordered mesoporous silicas with spherical morphology and average particle size in the range between 100 nm and 2 μm were synthesised according to two novel routes. Both synthesis routes used tetraethoxysilane, water, alcohol and aqueous ammonia for producing spherical silica beads. The porosity was created by adding two different kinds of pore structure directing agents to the starting solution: one was an n-alkyltrialkoxysilane which was covalently bonded to the silica framework, the other was an n-alkylamine which acted as a nonionic template. After calcination and post treatment the resulting particles showed a specific surface area up to 1000 m2 g-1, a specific pore volume of up to 0.8 …

Fabrication of metal nano-structures using anodic alumina membranes grown in phosphoric acid solution: Tailoring template morphology

2007

Abstract The influence of experimental parameters on the morphology of the porous structure and on the formation kinetics has been investigated for anodic alumina membranes (AAM) grown in aqueous H 3 PO 4 at 160 V. It was found that pore aspect ratio and membrane porosity on the solution-side surface are influenced by tensiostatic charge, bath temperature and the presence of Al 3+ ions in solution. Morphological and kinetic data, recorded in different conditions, give useful information on the growth mechanism of pore channels in phosphoric acid solution. Nickel nano-structures have been fabricated using AAM as template. Electroless deposition, performed by adding the reducing agent to a su…

Chemical heterogeneities in nanometric titanomagnetites prepared by soft chemistry and studied ex situ : evidence for fe-segregation and oxidation ki…

2001

Nanocrystalline Fe-based spinels with composition Fe3-xTixO4 are synthesized using soft chemistry. Two steps are involved:  precipitation in an aqueous solution followed by thermal annealing under a reducing mixture of N2/H2/H2O gases. Fe-segregation is found inside stoichiometric particles when the powders are studied ex situ; they exhibit a strong surface iron enrichment. This heterogeneity is related to kinetic effects linked to the difference of mobility between Fe2+ and Ti4+ cations during the partial oxidation of cations occurring ex situ. Stresses in the grains induced by oxidation govern the oxidation kinetics and lead to an abrupt compositional variation inside each particle. These…
