Hydration of cementitious materials, present and future

2011

This paper is a keynote presentation from the 13th International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement. It discusses the underlying principles of hydration and recent evidence for the mechanisms governing this process in both Portland cements and other cementitious materials. Given the overriding imperative to improve the sustainability of cementitious materials, routes to reducing CO2 emissions are discussed and the impact of supplementary materials on hydration considered. SHORT-TERM PROCESSES OF RADIONUCLIDE IMMOBILIZATION IN CEMENT - A CHEMICAL APPROACH

Abstract The ions released in solution by the constituents of cement (principally silicate, aluminate, OH and Ca ions) can combine with the anions and cations from nuclear wastes present in the mixing water to give very insoluble compounds that can fix these ions in the concrete matrix. In order to understand some of the particular physico-chemical processes involved in cement hydration in the presence of analogue elements, tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) was used instead of cement, which is too complex a mixture. Lavandula angustifolia Essential Oil and Linalool Counteract Social Aversion Induced by Social Defeat

Many vegetable extracts, essential oils, and their main constituents are active on the Central Nervous System (CNS). In fact, they have been used as sedatives, hypnotics, or tranquilizers for their activity in treating CNS disorders. In this research, we studied the possible activities of Lavandula angustifolia (LA) essential oil and of its main constituent, linalool, as anti-stress compounds on anxiety and social interaction and their in vitro effects on proteins (pERK and PKA) involved in the transmission of the signal. Physical modelling of Czochralski crystal growth in horizontal magnetic field

Abstract This study addresses experimentally the heat transfer, the temperature azimuthal non-uniformity and the onset of oscillations in a low temperature physical model of a medium-sized Czochralski crystal growth process with a strong horizontal magnetic field (HMF). It is observed that under certain conditions the integral heat flux may decrease with increasing magnetic field strength at the same time as the flow velocity increases. The azimuthal non-uniformity of the temperature field in the melt near the crystal model rim is only little influenced by its rotation rate outside of a narrow range where the centrifugal force balances the buoyant one. The aim of this prospective, multi-center, practice-based cohort study was to analyze factors associated with the success of all-ceramic crowns.All-ceramic crowns placed in a practice-based research network ([Ceramic Success Analysis, AG Keramik) were analyzed. Data from 1254 patients with (mostly in-office CAD/CAM) all-ceramic crowns placed by 101 dentists being followed up for more than 5 years were evaluated.
