Probing the Multiple Structures of Vaterite through Combined Computational and Experimental Raman Spectroscopy.

2014

First-principles Raman spectra have been computed for several new vaterite structural models that have been recently proposed, and compared with spectra recorded on a set of biogenic, geological and synthetic samples. This set includes new measurements collected on Herdamania momus spicules (Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia), which are known to have purity and crystallinity that are higher than for other biogenic samples. Overall, due to the close structural connection between the various models, the computed Raman spectra are found to be broadly similar. However, the spectra obtained for the two most stable models (monoclinic C2 and trigonal P3221, corresponding to two different p…

Using regression analysis method to model and optimize the quality of chip-removing processed metal surfaces

2017

The paper aim is to identify based on regression analysis, the quantitative relationship between the cutting process parameters (cutting speed, cutting depth and feed per tooth) and the arithmetic mean deviation of the surface profile, measured longitudinally and transversely on the cutting feed direction, which describe the system at any point in the chosen experimentally studied range. The equations coefficients means the influence of the variables on the pursued answer.

Kinetics of rat CSD-C2 binding to H3.3 RNA

2017

Cold-shock domain containing protein C2 (CSD-C2; also known as PIPPin) is an RNA-binding protein conserved in the evolution that interacts with the 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) of rat H1.0 and H3.3 histone messengers. Biolayer interferometry (BLI) is a technique that measures changes in an interference pattern generated from visible light, reflected from an optical layer, and a biolayer which contains molecules of interest. In this study, we used the BLI methodology in order to analyze and describe the binding properties of CSD-C2 and the mRNA encoding the rat brain histone protein H3.3. Recombinant CSD-C2 was incubated with in vitro transcribed, and biotinylated H3.3 RNA fragments bound…

Revised Atomistic Models of the Crystal Structure of C–S–H with high C/S Ratio

2016

Abstract The atomic structure of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C1.67–S–H x ) has been studied. Atomistic C–S–H models suggested in our previous study have been revised in order to perform a direct comparison of energetic stability of the different structures. An extensive set of periodic structures of C–S–H with variation of water content was created, and then optimized using molecular dynamics with reactive force field ReaxFF and quantum chemical semiempirical method PM6. All models show organization of water molecules inside the structure of C–S–H. The new geometries of C–S–H, reported in this paper, show lower relative energy with respect to the geometries from the original definition of C–S…

Charged oxygen interstitials in corundum: first principles simulations

2016

Combining supercell models and hybrid B3PW exchange-correlation functionals, ab initio simulations on quasi-stable configurations of interstitial ions in α-Al2O3 (corundum) crystals and possible migration trajectories have been modelled. We have studied crystalline distortion around migrating including interatomic distances and the effective atomic charges, as well as redistributions of the electronic density. Unlike neutral interstitial atom Oi studied by us previously, migrating ion does not form dumbbells with the nearest regular oxygen ions, due to the strong Coulomb interaction with the nearest cations as well as stronger repulsion between and adjacent regular ions. We have also estima…

Thermodynamic stability of stoichiometric LaFeO 3 and BiFeO 3 : a hybrid DFT study

2017

BiFeO3 perovskite attracts great attention due to its multiferroic properties and potential use as a parent material for Bi1−xSrxFeO3−δ and Bi1−xSrxFe1−yCoyO3−δ solid solutions in intermediate temperature cathodes of oxide fuel cells. Another iron-based LaFeO3 perovskite is the end member for well-known solid solutions (La1−xSrxFe1−yCoyO3−δ) used for oxide fuel cells and other electrochemical devices. In this study an ab initio hybrid functional approach was used for the study of the thermodynamic stability of both LaFeO3 and BiFeO3 with respect to decompositions to binary oxides and to elements, as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure. The localized (LCAO) basis sets describing th…

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of SFG Librational Modes Spectra of Water at the Water–Air Interface

2016

At the water–air interface, the hydrogen-bond network of water molecules is interrupted, and accordingly, the structure and dynamics of the interfacial water molecules are altered considerably compared with the bulk. Such interfacial water molecules have been studied by surface-specific vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy probing high-frequency O–H stretch and H–O–H bending modes. In contrast, the low-frequency librational mode has been much less studied with SFG. Because this mode is sensitive to the hydrogen-bond connectivity, understanding the librational mode of the interfacial water is crucial for unveiling a microscopic view of the interfacial water. Here, we compu…

2017

The adsorption of molecular acceptors is a viable method for tuning the work function of metal electrodes. This, in turn, enables adjusting charge injection barriers between the electrode and organic semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the potential of pyrene-tetraone (PyT) and its derivatives dibromopyrene-tetraone (Br-PyT) and dinitropyrene-tetraone (NO2-PyT) for modifying the electronic properties of Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. The systems are investigated by complementary theoretical and experimental approaches, including photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory simulations. For some of the investigated interfaces the trends expecte…

Use of response factorial design for process optimization of basic dye adsorption onto activated carbon derived from Persea species

2017

Abstract Full factorial design is a powerful and efficient mathematical approach widely applied in the optimization of response. The important parameters which affect the removal efficiency of methylene blue such temperature, initial pH of the solution, concentration and adsorbent dosage were optimized. They coded as A, B, C and D, consecutively, and were investigated at two levels (+ 1 and − 1). A linear mathematical model representing the influence of the different variables and their interactions was obtained. Main effect, Normal probability plot of residuals, analysis of variance (ANOVA), surface plots, and contour plots were used to study the effects and interaction effects between ope…
