Perspective: Magnetic skyrmions—Overview of recent progress in an active research field

2018

Within a decade, the field of magnetic skyrmionics has developed from a niche prediction to a huge and active research field. Not only do magnetic skyrmions—magnetic whirls with a unique topology—reveal fundamentally new physics, but they have also risen to prominence as up-and-coming candidates for next-generation high-density efficient information encoding. Within a few years, it has been possible to efficiently create, manipulate, and destroy nanometer-size skyrmions in device-compatible materials at room-temperature by all electrical means. Despite the incredibly rapid progress, several challenges still remain to obtain fully functional and competitive skyrmion devices, as discussed in …

Systems chemical analytics: introduction to the challenges of chemical complexity analysis

2019

Understanding complex (bio/geo)systems is a pivotal challenge in modern sciences that fuels a constant development of modern analytical technology, finding innovative solutions to resolve and analyse. In this introductory paper to the Faraday Discussion "Challenges in the analysis of complex natural systems", we aim to present concepts of complexity, and complex chemistry in systems subjected to biotic and abiotic transformations, and introduce the analytical possibilities to disentangle chemical complexity into its elementary parts (i.e. compositional and structural resolution) as a global integrated approach termed systems chemical analytics.

Phase-shifting of correlation fringes created by image processing as an alternative to improve digital shearography

2016

Abstract The adoption of digital speckle pattern shearing interferometry, or speckle shearography, is well known in many areas when one needs to measure micro-displacements in-plane and out of the plane in biological and non-biological objects; it is based on the Michelson's Interferometer with the use of a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) in order to provide the phase-shift of the fringes and then to improve the quality of the final image. The creation of the shifting images using a PZT, despite its widespread use, has some drawbacks or limitations, such as the cost of the apparatus, the difficulties in applying the same displacement in the mirror repeated times, and when the phase-shift can…

European Dissemination of the Ultra-low Temperature Scale, PLTS-2000

2003

The first phase of the EU collaborative project on sub‐kelvin thermometry, ‘ULT Dissemination’, is nearing completion, leading to the development of several thermometers and devices, and the instrumentation needed to disseminate the new Provisional Low Temperature Scale, PLTS‐2000, to users. Principal among these are a current‐sensing noise thermometer (CSNT), a CMN thermometer adapted for industrial use, a Coulomb blockade thermometer, a second‐sound acoustic thermometer and a superconductive reference device SRD‐1000. Several partners have set up 3He melting‐pressure thermometers to realise the PLTS‐2000, and will check it using Pt‐NMR, CMN and other thermometers. The scale, which was for…

Interferometric measurement of complex-field changes in transient detection imaging.

2020

We report an experimental method that combines nonlinear-crystal-based transient detection imaging (TDI) with interferometric complex-field retrieval. The system allows measuring both phase and amplitude of a dynamic scene while suppressing stationary background. Theoretical and experimental results prove the linear relation existing between input and output phases, as well as the benefits of phase analysis for both detection and measurement with high resolutions of λ/30, even under noisy conditions. Additionally, we present experimental evidence of the remarkable ability of the technique to detect phase sign changes in the scene —what we call differential-phase TDI— showing great detection…

Reconfigurable photonic routers based on multimode interference couplers

2015

We present a design approach for compact reconfigurable light routers with N access waveguides (WGs) based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers. The proposed devices comprise two MMI couplers, which are employed as power splitters and combiners, respectively, linked by an array of N single-mode WGs. When the effective refractive index of the WGs is modulated with the proper relative optical phase difference, the light can switch paths between the preset output channel and the remaining output WGs. Taking advantage of the transfer phases between the access ports of the MMI couplers, we derive very simple phase relations between the modulated WGs that enable the reconfiguration of the out…

A Low-Cost Multi-Modal Auditory-Visual-Tactile Framework for Remote Touch

2020

International audience; Haptic technology for human augmentation provides gains in ability for different applications, whether the aim is to enhance "disabilities" to "abilities", or "abilities" to "super-abilities". Commercially-available devices are generally expensive and tailored to specific applications and hardware. To give researchers a haptic feedback system that is economical, customisable, and fast to fabricate, our group developed a low-cost immersive haptic, audio, and visual experience built by using off-the-shelf (COTS) components. It is composed of a vibrotactile glove, a Leap Motion sensor, and an head-mounted display, integrated together to provide compelling immersive sens…

Assessment of Deep Learning Methodology for Self-Organizing 5G Networks

2019

In this paper, we present an auto-encoder-based machine learning framework for self organizing networks (SON). Traditional machine learning approaches, for example, K Nearest Neighbor, lack the ability to be precisely predictive. Therefore, they can not be extended for sequential data in the true sense because they require a batch of data to be trained on. In this work, we explore artificial neural network-based approaches like the autoencoders (AE) and propose a framework. The proposed framework provides an advantage over traditional machine learning approaches in terms of accuracy and the capability to be extended with other methods. The paper provides an assessment of the application of …

Dynamic DNA Origami Devices: from Strand-Displacement Reactions to External-Stimuli Responsive Systems

2018

DNA nanotechnology provides an excellent foundation for diverse nanoscale structures that can be used in various bioapplications and materials research. Among all existing DNA assembly techniques, DNA origami proves to be the most robust one for creating custom nanoshapes. Since its invention in 2006, building from the bottom up using DNA advanced drastically, and therefore, more and more complex DNA-based systems became accessible. So far, the vast majority of the demonstrated DNA origami frameworks are static by nature; however, there also exist dynamic DNA origami devices that are increasingly coming into view. In this review, we discuss DNA origami nanostructures that exhibit controlled…
