Droplets pinned at chemically inhomogenous substrates: A simulation study of the two-dimensional Ising case

2016

As a simplified model of a liquid nanostripe adsorbed on a chemically structured substrate surface, a two-dimensional Ising system with two boundaries at which surface fields act is studied. At the upper boundary, the surface field is uniformly negative, while at the lower boundary (a distance L apart), the surface field is negative only outside a range of extension b, where a positive surface stabilizes a droplet of the phase with positive magnetization for temperatures T exceeding the critical temperature Tw of the wetting transition of this model. We investigate the local order parameter profiles across the droplet, both in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the substrate, vary…

Adsorption and diffusion of a molybdenum atom on theTiO2(110)surface: A first-principles study

2007

A study on the structure and energetics of a single molybdenum atom adsorbed on the $\mathrm{Ti}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}(110)$ surface is reported. All possible adsorption sites have been determined. Moreover, it is found that incorporation of the Mo atom into the first surface layer leads to considerably more stable structures than on any adsorption site. Different channels for migration of the molybdenum atom have been identified. The diffusion barriers of these channels have been determined. The results on structure and energetics are discussed by analyzing the electronic properties of the $\mathrm{Mo}∕\mathrm{Ti}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}(110)$ systems.

Study of the cutting process parameters that influence the surface quality machined by end milling of the aluminum alloy

2019

This research aims to carry out an elaborate experiment by witch resulting in relevant conclusions that have practical applicability in the aeronautical industry. The surface roughness measured transversely and longitudinally on the feed motion direction of the cutting tool constitutes the dedicated objective function on which the study was conducted in this case. The end milling was chosen of an aluminum alloy used explicitly in the aeronautical industry. The actual experiments were carried out in the only aeronautical industry in Romania carrying out these types of machining and were made according to the methodology with rigorous experimental planning of the research. The experimental pl…

Failure Analysis of a Humeral Shaft Locking Compression Plate—Surface Investigation and Simulation by Finite Element Method

2019

A case study of a failed humeral shaft locking compression plate is presented, starting with a clinical case where failure occurred and an implant replacement was required. This study uses finite element method (FEM) in order to determine the failure modes for the clinical case. Four loading scenarios that simulate daily life activities were considered for determining the stress distribution in a humeral shaft locking compression plate (LCP). Referring to the simulation results, the failure analysis was performed on the explant. Using fracture surface investigation methods, stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a mixed mode failure was determined. An initial fatigue failu…

Bundlet Model for Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes, Nanocones and Nanohorns

2012

This paper discusses the existence of single-wall carbon nanocones (SWNCs), especially nanohorns (SWNHs), in organic solvents in the form of clusters. A theory is developed based on a bundlet model describing their distribution function by size. Phenomena have a unified explanation in bundlet model in which free energy of an SWNC, involved in a cluster, is combined from two components: a volume one, proportional to number of molecules n in a cluster, and a surface one proportional to n1/2. Bundlet model enables describing distribution function of SWNC clusters by size. From purely geometrical differences, bundlet (SWNCs) and droplet (fullerene) models predict different behaviours. The SWNCs…

Kinetics of Surface Chemical Reactions from a Digital Video

2020

In the last few years, the color analysis of the studied surface has been regarded as a nonexpensive way to obtain not only the spectrochemical data but also the spatiotemporal information of the entire surface. Mean color intensities and standard deviation calculated from the red, green, and blue color histograms of digital images of surfaces have been considered particularly useful for the chemical understanding of surface kinetics. The shape of curves, the maximum of peaks, or the half-peak widths depend on the kinetic constants and on the kinetic order of the surface chemical process. Some strategies used for obtaining the kinetics from RGB color intensities and their standard deviation…

Ridge-enhanced optical transmission through a continuous metal film

2004

Optical transmission through a continuous (without holes) metal film with a periodic structure of metal or dielectric ridges on one or both interfaces was numerically studied. The dependencies of the transmission on the ridge width and height as well as the ridge arrangements on the opposite interfaces were investigated in weak- and strong-coupling regimes. The transmission enhancement was shown to depend on the relative position of the ridge gratings on the opposite interfaces of a film, confirming the role of resonant tunneling processes involving states of the surface polariton Bloch modes.
