Scopolamine analysis in beverages: Bicolorimetric device vs portable nano liquid chromatography

2021

Abstract Scopolamine (SCP) is often involved in sexual assaults and robberies, particularly in recreational environments. Therefore, analytical tools are required for the analysis of this compound amenable for the field. In this work, a sensor for SCP is described based on the entrapment of KMnO4 into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The possibility of using KMnO4 in combination with the reagent 1,2-naphtoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQS) giving a double sensor acting as a bicolorimetric device is also demonstrated. In contact with the sample, the PDMS composite delivers MnO4−, which reacts rapidly with SCP under basic conditions causing a change of the color of the solution that can be related to the …

Date-rape evidence through fast determination of γ-butyrolactone in adulterated beverages.

2021

Abstract An infrared spectroscopy (IR) based methodology has been developed to determine γ-butyrolactone (GBL) in adulterated beverages. The proposed method permits the direct screening of GBL in beverages and involves a minimum sample treatment requiring less than 2 min for quantitative determination of GBL. Sensitivity of IR method was improved by using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) providing detection limits of 0.023 mg g−1. Accuracy of the proposed methodology was evaluated through the analysis of soft beverages and alcoholic cocktails spiked with GBL at concentration levels ranging from 0.075 to 10 mg g−1 providing recovery values from 91 to 100%. GBL was determined in twelve blind-sp…

INNOVAZIONE DEI MATERIALI NATURALI: TERRA E NANOTUBI DI ARGILLA PER UNA SFIDA SOSTENIBILE

2019

Within the cultural debate that considers the environmental issue as a priority and with reference to the studies and researches that over the last years have supported compound materials containing rammed earth the Authors aware of the need of giving to the relationship of Project and Matter a key role supported by the characteristics of Architectural Technology show the results of an experimentation that aims to improve the performance of rammed earth with the contribution of nanotechnologies developing a ‘new material’ with a reduced embodied energy and a reduced amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.Settore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

A Brief Review of the Effects of Pressure on Wolframite-Type Oxides

2018

In this article, we review the advances that have been made on the understanding of the high-pressure (HP) structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of wolframite-type oxides since the first works in the early 1990s. Mainly tungstates, which are the best known wolframites, but also tantalates and niobates, with an isomorphic ambient-pressure wolframite structure, have been included in this review. Apart from estimating the bulk moduli of all known wolframites, the cation–oxygen bond distances and their change with pressure have been correlated with their compressibility. The composition variations of all wolframites have been employed to understand their different structural phase …

Bio-inspired consolidants derived from crystalline nanocellulose for decayed wood

2018

Abstract Novel bio-inspired materials derived from crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) have been tested as wood consolidants. A suspension of CNC, produced by acid hydrolysis of cellulose and used as such or mixed with lignin and/or siloxane derivatives (PDMS), was applied on rotted wood samples of Norway spruce. X-Ray diffraction analysis on CNC powder showed high crystallinity index. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicated a nearly uniform particle size distribution with an average hydrodynamic diameter for pure CNC smaller than that in the mixtures. Raman and FTIR spectroscopies suggested interactions between lignin, PDMS and CNC components. The storage modulus of wood samples, …

Towards the first proof of the concept of a Reverse ElectroDialysis - Membrane Distillation Heat Engine

2019

Abstract The coupling of Reverse Electrodialysis with Membrane Distillation is a promising option for the conversion of waste heat into electricity. This study evaluates the performances of the integrated system under different operating conditions, employing validated model and correlations. This work provides a detailed description of the behaviour of a real RED-MD heat engine and indicates the set of inlet concentrations, velocities and equipment size which returns the highest cycle exergy efficiency. These operating conditions were selected for the pilot plant developed within the EU-funded project RED Heat to Power. For the first time, a perspective analysis was also included, consider…

Soret coefficient of trace ions determined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a thin cell. Theory and measurement

2018

The tendency of a substance to migrate due to a temperature gradient is known as thermodiffusion or the Soret effect. We believe that this is the first work that describes the study of the Soret effect using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a non-isothermal thin cell, and shows how the Soret coefficient can be determined from these measurements. The effect of a temperature gradient in a thin cell is analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. Our theoretical modeling of the system predicts the effect of key parameters to the impedance spectra. Experimentally we determine the Soret coefficient of the redox couple Fe(CN)64−/Fe(CN)63− in an aqueous KCl solution. It is found that …

Correlations for estimating the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation plants considering the main design trends and operating conditions

2018

Abstract This work proposes a correlation for the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation (MED) plants, considering their main design options and parameters, such as the number of effects, size/capacity, and heat source temperature. These parameters are varied within a large range to cover as many different cases as possible. The cost correlation decouples the evaporator cost and includes in the expression the ratio of the heat exchanger area to a reference one. This area is calculated using a validated MED numerical model, with the results then processed to produce fitted expressions. Two versions of this correlation with different levels of complexity are proposed, which provid…

D2 and H2 adsorption capacity and selectivity in CHA zeolites: Effect of Si/Al ratio, cationic composition and temperature

2020

International audience; The work deals with the effect of composition of CHA zeolites on the adsorption and separation of H2 and D2 under cryogenic temperatures. In the first part of this work the effect of Si/Al ratio and cationic composition on single gas adsorption of H2 and D2 was studied at 77.4 K. It was found that the adsorption capacities increase with Al content up to Si/Al = 2.1. Unexpectedly, Na-CHA zeolite with the highest Al content (Si/Al = 1.1) adsorbs only negligible amount because of the collapse of the zeolite structure upon dehydration at 400°C. The Na-and Li-containing chabazites with Si/Al = 2.1 possess similar adsorption capacities. In contrast, progressive replacement…
