New fossil arthropods (Notostraca and Insecta: Syntonopterida) in the Continental Middle Permian of Provence (Bas-Argens Basin, France).

2009

9 pages; Apart frequent and relatively common ichnites, only a few body fossils (Ostracoda) have been mentioned in the Red Continental Permian formations of Provence till these last years. During 2006 and 2007 field researches, new arthropods have been discovered in the Pradineaux Formation of the Bas-Argens. They are Triopsidae (Crustacea, Notostraca) and an insect wing (Syntonopteridae) corresponding to a new genus and species Gallolithoneura butchlii gen. et sp. n. This latter is the first insect record in the Permian of Provence and the youngest one of this enigmatic Carboniferous paleopteran family. As in the other French Permian basins (Lodève, Saint-Affrique), these discoveries demon…

First evidence of underwater sounds emitted by the living fossils Lepidurus lubbocki and Triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda: Notostraca)

2021

Sound is the most effective means of communication in marine and freshwater ecosystems. However, no data about acoustic emissions from non-malacostracan crustaceans are currently available, so their ability to produce sounds is unknown. For the first time, this study investigated the sound produced by 2 tadpole shrimp species,Triops cancriformisandLepidurus lubbocki.L. lubbockiindividuals were collected from a natural temporary pond in Sicily (Italy), whereasT. cancriformisindividuals were obtained from eggs contained in sediment from a rock pool in Sardinia (Italy). In the laboratory, experimental tanks with the animals (one species at a time) were acoustically monitored. Both species prod…

Updated checklist and distribution of large branchiopods (Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) in Tunisia

2016

Temporary ponds are the most peculiar and representative water bodies in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world, where they often represent diversity hotspots that greatly contribute to the regional biodiversity. Being indissolubly linked to these ecosystems, the so-called “large branchiopods” are unanimously considered flagship taxa of these habitats. Nonetheless, updated and detailed information on large branchiopod faunas is still missing in many countries or regions. Based on an extensive bibliographical review and field samplings, we provide an updated and commented checklist of large branchiopods in Tunisia, one of the less investigated countries of the Maghreb as far as inland w…

Updated status of Anostraca, Notostraca and Spinicaudata (Crustacea Branchiopoda) in Sicily (Italy): review and new records.

2006

A survey on distribution, phenology and status of large branchiopod crustaceans (Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) in Sicily and in circum-Sicilian islands was carried out from autumn 2000 to winter 2004/2005 with the purpose of providing an organised contribution to the knowledge of the distribution of these crustaceans in the region. Data from literature on Sicilian large branchiopods has been briefly reviewed, and field surveys allowed us to add new data on their actual consistency in the area. Current Sicilian large branchiopod fauna is characterised by a low species richness and diversity, having possibly been impoverished by the high anthropic impact which has interes…

Notostraca trackways in Permian playa environments of the Lodève basin (France).

2008

36 pages; International audience; For nearly 20 years, Dr. Lapeyrie, surgeon at Lodève, has gathered many fossils coming from the Salagou Formation of the Lodève Permian basin. They are Insects, Notostraca, plants and ichnofossils. Among the latter, appears a multitude of Arthropoda trackways, finely preserved, which were collected in the top of sequences deposited in a playa environment. The locomotion experiments undertaken with extant animals suggested allocation of the majority of these trackways to Notostraca which are also known by several hundreds of remains (carapace, appendages, body whole). From these different parts, it was described as Triops cancriformis permiensis and Lepiduru…

An updated checklist and biogeography of the Sardinian large branchiopods, with a focus on Spinicaudata (Crustacea, Branchiopoda)

2021

Author(s): Marrone, Federico; Alfonso, Giuseppe; Cottarelli, Vezio; Botta, Marco Massimo; Koepp, Christian; Stoch, Fabio | Abstract: The large branchiopod fauna of Sardinia is reviewed based both on literature and newly collected data. Based on the available evidence, 13 taxa are present on the island (8 Anostraca, 2 Notostraca, and 3 Spinicaudata). Among them, the finding of the spinicaudatan Leptestheria dahalacensis is new for Sardinia, while the spinicaudatans Cyzicus bucheti and Eulimnadia sp. were overlooked in the most recent synopses on the fauna of the island due to misidentifications. Conversely, Cyzicus tetracerus and Limnadia lenticularis, previously erroneously reported based o…

Molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca

2012

Abstract We used a combined analysis of one nuclear (28S rDNA) and three mitochondrial markers (COI, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA) to infer the molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca, represented by samples from the six continents that are inhabited by this group of branchiopod crustaceans. Our results confirm the monophyly of both extant notostracan genera Triops and Lepidurus with good support in model based and maximum parsimony analyses. We used branchiopod fossils as a calibration to infer divergence times among notostracan lineages and accounted for rate heterogeneity among lineages by applying relaxed-clock models. Our divergence date estimates indicate an initial diversification into the gener…

First record of the tadpole shrimp triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda, Notostraca) in Cyprus

2014

The presence of the large branchiopod Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801-1802) in Cyprus is reported for the first time. Triops cancriformis individuals were observed in the large temporary wetland of Paralimni Lake (Famagusta District, Cyprus) during the wet periods of 2013 and 2014. This finding extends the current knowledge of the species distribution in the eastern Mediterranean area, and stresses the ecological and conservation value of the unique habitat of Paralimni Lake. In addition, it highlights the need for carrying on further studies on the fauna of temporary pond habitats in Cyprus, and for better conservation management strategies for such EU priority habitats.
