The use of demonstratives and context activation in Catalan parliamentary debate

2014

Context is crucial in analyzing parliamentary debate, a field which has recently attracted attention from various perspectives. However, not many contributions focus on specific linguistic markers that shape and are simultaneously influenced by the context of production. The present article aims to partially fill in this gap by analyzing the demonstratives used in parliamentary debates and highlighting how they contribute to activating different aspects of context. After summarizing the features of parliamentary debate as a genre and the importance and complexity of context considered as a subjective and dynamic mental construct, the pragmatic functions of demonstratives are presented and …

Healthy Aging and Sentence Production: Disrupted Lexical Access in the Context of Intact Syntactic Planning.

2020

AbstractHealthy ageing does not affect all features of language processing equally. In this study, we investigated the effects of ageing on different processes involved in fluent sentence production, a complex task that requires the successful execution and coordination of multiple processes. In Experiment 1, we investigated age-related effects on the speed of syntax selection using a syntactic priming paradigm. Both young and older adults produced target sentences quicker following syntactically related primes compared to unrelated primes, indicating that syntactic facilitation effects are preserved with age. In Experiment 2, we investigated age-related effects in syntactic planning and le…

Register affects language comprehension: ERP evidence from article omission in newspaper headlines

2011

Abstract Language processing involving syntax-discourse interface operations has been claimed to be particularly resource-consuming. In production, this additional complexity is claimed to be the source of article omission in the speech of young children and certain language-impaired speakers. In comprehension, article omission in some “special registers” (e.g., newspaper headlines) has been attributed to the trade-off between spending more processing resources and increasing processing speed. We investigated the comprehension of noun phrases (NPs) with and without articles (e.g., (a) policeman arrests (a) monk) when readers were or were not aware of reading headlines by recording electroph…

How to blend language and ICT in the didactics of scientific translation

2014

New information and communication technologies (ICT) have burst into all spheres of our lives, modifying them in ways inconceivable barely 10 years ago. Generally speaking, these modifications have enhanced interaction processes (telecommunications), work and human production (task automation). The field of professional translation has been particularly affected by this technological revolution and has led to new research, professional and didactic paradigms, known as Automatic Translation and Computer Aided Translation. This is the framework for our present work, which attempts to put together the development of communicative (linguistic) competences with procedural (instrumental) and eval…

Validation of Semantic Analyses of Unstructured Medical Data for Research Purposes

2019

BACKGROUND: In secondary data there are often unstructured free texts. The aim of this study was to validate a text mining system to extract unstructured medical data for research purposes. METHODS: From a radiological department, 1,000 out of 7,102 CT findings were randomly selected. These were manually divided into defined groups by 2 physicians. For automated tagging and reporting, the text analysis software Averbis Extraction Platform (AEP) was used. Special features of the system are a morphological analysis for the decomposition of compound words as well as the recognition of noun phrases, abbreviations and negated statements. Based on the extracted standardized keywords, findings rep…

La linguistica vista dalle Alpi. Teoria, lessicografia e multilinguismo

2019

Il volume raccoglie contributi che hanno come principale tema di ricerca la multiforme realtà linguistica dell’ambiente alpino. Essi indagano fenomeni linguistici di lingue standard e di minoranza appartenenti ai gruppi romanzo e germanico. Il libro si compone di quatto sezioni: modelli teorici, valenza e lessicografia, linguistica delle varietà e multilinguismo e le lingue nel Trentino-Alto Adige. The contributions of this book deal with the diverse linguistic situation of the Alps by focusing on phenomena of standard and minority languages which belong to the Romance and Germanic group. They address four main topics which correspond to the four sections of the book: linguistic theory, val…

New is not always costly: evidence from online processing of topic and contrast in Japanese.

2013

Two visual ERP experiments were conducted to investigate topic and contrast assigned by various cues such as discourse context, sentential position and marker during referential processing in Japanese. Experiment 1 showed that there was no N400-difference for new vs. given noun phrases (NPs) when the new NP was expected (contrastively focused) based on its preceding context and sentential position. Experiment 2 further revealed that the N400 for new NPs can be modulated by the NP’s contrastive meaning (exhausitivity) induced from the marker. Both experiments also showed that new NPs engendered an increased Late Positivity. The reduced N400 for new vs. given supports an expectation-based lin…
