Seasonal variations in the onset and healing rates of venous leg ulcers

Objectives As many vascular pathologies exhibit circannual fluctuation, the aim of this study was to assess the chronobiological features of venous ulcers. Methods Based on a retrospective survey of the case histories of 391 venous ulcer patients, the rates of ulcer onset and healing in each month were analysed statistically; a time series was constructed to evaluate the seasonality. The effects of the optically active enantiomers of oxaprotiline (OXP), R(-) OXP and S(+) OXP, on depressive symptomatology and the sleep EEG were investigated in two separate exploratory studies. In addition, the neuroendocrine profile of both compounds was characterized in normal controls. In the patients treated with a daily oral dose of 150 mg S(+) OXP we found a Hamilton depression score that decreased from 29.1 +/- 1.8 (SEM) on day 0 to 14.7 +/- 3.2 on day 28 (P0.01). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of constant and variable resistance exercise on neuromuscular and endocrine responses during maximal strength and hypertrophic loadings. Methods: Thirteen young men (age = 28.4 ± 3.7 yr) took part in four loadings (maximal strength and hypertrophic loadings using both constant and variable resistance) in a counterbalanced order. Abstract 111 consecutively admitted in-patients with a depressive syndrome received a dexamethasone suppresion test (DST) after all known factors which might confound the test results had been carefully excluded. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, corticosterone and dexamethasone were compared with several diagnostic evaluations (RDC, DSM-III, ICD-9) in a controlled study. The positive predictive value of nonsuppressed corticosteroid levels was only moderate for each diagnostic category. Epidemiological evidence has revealed that hyperhomocysteinemia increases the risk for vascular disease. Methionine Synthase Reductase (MTRR) is one of several key enzymes in the homocysteine metabolic pathway and its mutant forms have been implicated in abnormal homocysteine accumulation. In this study, we determined total plasma homocysteine levels and MTRR A66G polymorphism in 114 patients with vascular disease: 58 patients with deep-vein thrombosis, 56 patients with arterial thrombosis, and 95 healthy subjects from the Sicilian population. Abstract Background The aim of this paper was to evaluate the outcomes of a homogenous series of emergency with a toe-to-hand transfer reconstructions with a different timing: immediate (same surgical step with the debridement), primary (in the first 24 h), early (24–72 h after the debridement) or delayed (72 h-7 days). Materials and methods Between 2001 and 2011, 31 patients received an immediate reconstruction with a toe-to-hand transfer. The hands-on supermicrosurgery course provided participants a valuable learning experience of in-depth practices of supermicrosurgical skills with experts. Seven live surgeries were successfully demonstrated at 8th World Symposium for Lymphedema Surgery. Variable donor sites for vascularized lymph node transfer were the submental, supraclavicular, groin, and omental; while the recipient sites included the wrist and axilla in upper limb; and popliteal and groin in the lower limb. The therapeutic and preventive lymphovenous anastomosis was also satisfactorily performed.
Diagnostic accuracy of current sonographic criteria for the detection of outflow abnormalities in the internal jugular veins

Objectives: This study was aimed at evaluation of the diagnostic value of Doppler sonography for the assessment of abnormalities in the internal jugular veins (IJVs). Method: One hundred and sixteen IJVs were assessed in 58 patients with associated multiple sclerosis. Findings of Doppler sonography were compared with results of the reference test: catheter venography. Results: At least one positive extracranial sonographic criterion suggesting venous abnormality was found in 92.2% of the assessed veins.
