Permian-Cenozoic deep-water carbonate rocks of the Southern Tethyan Domain. The case of Central Sicily

2016

We present an integrated stratigraphy of the outcropping and buried Permian-Cenozoic deep-water carbonate successions, forming some of the tectonic units mostly buried beneath the Late Neogene sedimentary cover in the fold and thrust belt of Central Sicily. Three main successions, pertaining to the well known Lercara, Imerese and Sicanian domains, have been reconstructed on the basis of a detailed facies analysis, seismostratigraphic interpretation, bio -stratigraphy (mostly based on palynological data) and comparison between outcropping and subsurface deep-water sediments. The main results reveal a continuous sedimentation of the deep-water Southern Tethyan Sicilian succession since the Pe…

Onko haarniskan sisällä elämää? : postmodernia hahmoanalyysia Orlando Furiososta

2012

The study introduces Orlando Furioso, which is in Finland quite unfamiliar Renaissance poem by Ludovico Ariosto, and focuses on observation of the i…

Data on medicinal plants in the records of Latvian folk medicine from the 19th century

2019

Abstract The data presented in this article is in support of the research paper “Medicinal plants and their uses recorded in the Archives of Latvian Folklore from the 19th century” [1]. This article provides the list of plant species and disorders treated with medicinal plants mentioned in the records of Latvian folk medicine and used by indigenous people of Latvia in the 19th century. In total, the data include 211 genera belonging to 71 plant families. The accepted scientific names of plant species, plant parts used, dosage forms of herbal medicines, and routes of administration are reported in the table. Plant uses are grouped into one of the 17 categories based on the body systems and p…

Parasites in sympatric populations of native and invasive freshwater bivalves

2021

An increasing threat to local, native freshwater mussels (Unionida)—an ecologically important but globally alarmingly declining group— is the invasion by exotic bivalves. The Enemy Release Hypothesis predicts that introduced species should benefit from enemy-mediated competition because they are less likely to be harmed by natural enemies, such as parasites, than their native competitors. We investigated within-site differences in parasitism between sympatric native (tot. five spp.) and invasive (tot. three spp.) bivalves in eight northern European waterbodies, which harboured totally 15 parasite taxa. In paired comparisons using within-site averages, the mean number of parasite species in …

Seabird influence on ecological processes in coastal marine ecosystems: An overlooked role? A critical review

2021

Abstract Seabirds are vital, but overlooked, components of coastal marine ecosystems and may connect the marine and terrestrial environment at a global scale, significantly contributing to inter-habitat connectivity and the provision of multiple ecosystem services. Although the ecological and functional role of birds in terrestrial areas, islands in particular, has been deeply studied since the last century, the same does not hold true for coastal marine areas. Given the importance of coastal areas for seabirds worldwide and, at the same time, the high vulnerability of both, looking into the role of seabirds in influencing the ecosystem functioning in coastal areas is needed nowadays. Here,…

Mixed e-assessment: An application of the studentgenerated question technique

2010

This paper presents the experiment of a mixed summative-formative evaluation in an asynchronous distance higher education context. In the experiment, performed in the distance course of Total Quality Management, Industrial Engineering, University of Guadalajara (Mexico), students are guided to formultate questions on specific topics. Studentgenerated questions are evaluated through an ad-hoc quantitative tool, specifically designed for the purpose: the four-criterion Observation Matrix. The experiment shows: (1) that it is possible to improve the Higher Education evaluation process and formalise students' skill in a more thoroughly way than with traditional evaluation; (2) how the student-e…

First report of grapevine fleck virus in vineyards of Bosnia and Herzegovina

2020

Grapevine is one of the most important fruit crops in Bosnia and Herzegovina with an annual production of around 40 thousand tons in 2018 (FAOSTAT, http://www.fao.org/ faostat/en/#data/QC). Production of grapevine in the country is mainly concentrated in vineyards in the Lištica and Mostar regions of Herzegovina with the two predominant autochthonous cultivars ‘Žilavka’ and ‘Blatina’. Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV) from the genus Maculavirus in the family Tymoviridae is a phloem limited virus with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome (Dreher et al. 2012). GFkV is associated with fleck disease of Vitis spp. In order to investigate the current status of GFkV in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 80…

Hepatic enhancement in cirrhosis in the portal venous phase: what are the differences between gadoxetate disodium and gadobenate dimeglumine?

2020

Purpose: To compare the level of parenchymal and portal venous enhancement in the portal venous phase (PVP) in cirrhotic patients undergoing gadoxetate disodium- and gadobenate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI. Methods: In this retrospective study, 84 cirrhotic patients (mean age ± SD: 66 ± 13 years) who underwent contrast-enhanced MRI with both gadoxetate disodium and gadobenate dimeglumine between 2012 and 2018 were included. Two readers measured signal intensities of hepatic parenchyma, portal vein and psoas muscle on precontrast and PVP. Relative enhancement (RE), image contrast, and portal vein-to-liver contrast difference were calculated. Intraindividual differences were compared with the Wil…

The discovery, distribution, and diversity of DNA viruses associated with Drosophila melanogaster in Europe

2021

Drosophila melanogaster is an important model for antiviral immunity in arthropods, but very few DNA viruses have been described from the family Drosophilidae. This deficiency limits our opportunity to use natural host-pathogen combinations in experimental studies, and may bias our understanding of the Drosophila virome. Here, we report fourteen DNA viruses detected in a metagenomic analysis of 6668 pool-sequenced Drosophila, sampled from forty-seven European locations between 2014 and 2016. These include three new nudiviruses, a new and divergent entomopoxvirus, a virus related to Leptopilina boulardi filamentous virus, and a virus related to Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy viru…
