B-type natriuretic peptide trend predicts clinical significance of worsening renal function in acute heart failure
2019
Aims In acute heart failure (AHF), relationships between changes in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and worsening renal function (WRF) and its prognostic implications have not been fully determined. We investigated the relationship between WRF and a decrease in BNP with in-hospital and 1-year mortality in AHF. Methods and results The Acute Kidney Injury NGAL Evaluation of Symptomatic heart faIlure Study (AKINESIS) was a prospective, international, multicentre study of AHF patients. Severe WRF (sWRF) was a sustained increase of >= 44.2 mu mol/L (0.5 mg/dL) or >= 50% in creatinine, non-severe WRF (nsWRF) was a non-sustained increase of >= 26.5 mu mol/L (0.3 mg/dL) or >= 50% in cr…
Evaluation of the power quality from a seawave power farm for different interconnection schemes
2007
In this paper we present an approach to the interconnection of a seawave power farm to the grid The generator type used in the farm is a Permanent Magnet (PM) linear generator driven from the seawaves that generates, therefore, highly distorted emfs. We propose and compare two possible ways to interconnect the farm to the grid. One is based on an approach where for each generator there is a conversion subsystem that permits the direct connection of each generator to the a.c. network, the other one is based on an ac.-d.c. converter that is connected to the generator, the converter is connected to a dc link that can receive the power from every unit and that can supply a dc-ac converter direc…
Analysis of interconnection substations for sewave power farms
2014
In this paper we analyse the interconnection of a seawave power farm to the grid. The generator type used in the farm is a linear synchronous generator driven from the seawaves that generates, highly distorted emfs. We presents two possible ways to interconnect the farm to the grid. One is based on an approach where for each generator there is a conversion subsystem that permits the direct connection of each generator to the a.c. network, the other one is based on an a.c.-d.c. converter that is connected to the generator, the converter is connected to a dc link that can receive the power from every unit and that can supply a dc-ac converter directly connected to the main.
Induction of interferon regulatory factors, 2′‐5′ oligoadenylate synthetase, P68 kinase and RNase L in chronic myelogenous leukaemia cells and its re…
1996
The genes crucially determining the therapeutic response of chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) to interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) are unknown. Recently, two independent IFN-alpha signalling pathways were identified: the classic pathway mediates induction of 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase (2-5 OAS), p68 kinase and IFN regulatory factor-2 (IRF-2), whereas the alternate pathway leads to activation of IFN regulatory factor-1 (IRF-1). We investigated whether deficient or imbalanced expression of components of these two pathways is associated with resistance of CML cells to antiproliferative action of IFN alpha/beta. Constitutive and IFN-induced transcript levels of IFN-dependent genes in mononucl…
Clostridium difficile toxins A and B inhibit human immune response in vitro
1988
Two Clostridium difficile toxins isolated from strain VPI 10463 were tested for their effect on different human T-cell proliferation systems. In mitogen- and antigen-driven T-cell proliferation systems, toxins inhibited the proliferative response in a dose-dependent fashion. In interleukin-2-driven culture systems, no effect of toxins could be found on preactivated T cells. We suspected that monocytes were the influenced cells, since in antigen- and mitogen-driven systems monocytes were necessary for the proliferative response, whereas the interleukin-2-driven system was independent of monocytes. To prove this concept, purified monocytes were treated with toxins. The treatment was found to …

Girls strike back : the politics of parody in an indigenous TV comedy
2016
The diversification of the media has opened up new spaces for performances that seek not only to evoke laughter but also to voice social critique. One example of this development is the TV comedy show Märät säpikkäät/Njuoska bittut, created by two young women belonging to the indigenous Sámi people living in Finland. This paper focuses on one particularly critical sketch in the show: a counter-parody of a popular parody of the Sámi presented by two Finnish male comedians. The original sketch was a parody of ethnicity. As they strike back, however, the female presenters consciously foreground the categories of gender and class, thereby introducing a completely new figure: a white, urban, und…
Intestinal Involvement in Kawasaki Disease
2018
Objectives To describe a case of Kawasaki disease with intestinal involvement and to analyze other published reports to define clinical characteristics, diagnostic issues, and therapeutic approaches of gastrointestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease. Study design A computerized search without language restriction was conducted using PubMed and SCOPUS. An article was considered eligible for inclusion in the systematic review if it reported data on patient(s) with intestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease. Our case was also included in the analysis. Results Thirty-three articles reporting 48 cases of Kawasaki disease with intestinal involvement were considered. Fever, abdominal pain, and vo…
Postlumbar Puncture Headache Syndrome
2003
Publisher Summary This chapter presents a study on acute and chronic pain related to postlumbar puncture headache syndrome. The symptoms of the postlumbar puncture headache (PLPH) syndrome are positional, beginning in the upright posture and subsiding or improving when the patient reclines. Sometimes symptoms of PLPH occur spontaneously without a detectable dural defect. In these instances, suggested causes include a hyperactive resorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or a spontaneous mechanical dural hole. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in patients with intracranial hypotension—either after LP or spontaneously—show meningeal enhancement, subdural effusions, and downward brain displ…
Arterio-venous malformations in childhood: Clinical presentation, results after operative treatment and long-term follow-up
1989
In a series of 182 arterio-venous malformations (AVM) recently published [8] we found 33 children aged 1 to 16 years. In 28 cases, the admitting condition was hemorrhage. For 31 AVMs total excision was possible. We observed one postoperative death accounting for a mortality of 3%. All children but two were followed-up by personal examination. Two were not able to work due to severe neurological deficits and seven had not been able to get into their intended occupation.
