Prospective Randomized Study Comparing Myeloablative Unrelated Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation versus HLA-Haploidentical Related Stem Cell Trans…

2020

In this prospective randomized study, we compared the outcomes of single-unit umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) and unmanipulated haploidentical stem cell transplantation (haplo-SCT) with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) in adults with hematologic malignancies. All patients received a myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimen consisting of thiotepa, busulfan, and fludarabine, with antithymocyte globulin (ATG) added for UCBT recipients. Nineteen patients were randomized to UCBT and the other 26 to haplo-HSCT. Four patients (15%) allocated to the haplo-HSCT arm lacked a suitable donor and were crossed over to the UCBT arm. Finally, 23 underwent UCBT and 22 underwent haplo…

Low-molecular-weight heparin to prevent recurrent venous thromboembolism in pregnancy: Rationale and design of the Highlow study, a randomised trial …

2016

Summary Background Women with a history of venous thromboembolism (VTE) have a 2% to 10% absolute risk of VTE recurrence during subsequent pregnancies. Therefore, current guidelines recommend that all pregnant women with a history of VTE receive pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis. The optimal dose of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for thromboprophylaxis is unknown. In the Highlow study (NCT 01828697; www.highlowstudy.org ), we compare a fixed low dose of LMWH with an intermediate dose of LMWH for the prevention of pregnancy-associated recurrent VTE. We present the rationale and design features of this study. Methods The Highlow study is an investigator-initiated, multicentre, internation…

A comprehensive classification of craniofacial fractures: postmortem and clinical studies with two- and three-dimensional computed tomography.

2002

Abstract A comprehensive classification of midfacial/craniofacial fractures, based on two- and three-dimensional computed tomography (2D and 3D-CT) is presented. We performed a postmortem analysis of 24 patients who had died from trauma with signs of craniofacial fractures, based on 2D and 3D-CT studies with pathoanatomical findings. In addition, CT findings for 100 patients with craniofacial injuries requiring an emergency CT were correlated with surgical findings and follow-up results. On the basis of the analysis of a total of 377 fractures a classification system is proposed. The system is based on the use of the AO/ASIF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen/Association for the S…

Non-invasive joint decompression : an important factor in the regeneration of the bone marrow and disc recapture in temporomandibular arthropathies

2018

Background This article aims to demonstrate the importance of the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) decompression in the treatment of degenerative processes and disc displacements, reporting two clinical cases treated with orthopedic and decompressive correction of TMJ. Material and Methods The studies reported in this article show patients with muscle and joint pain who were evaluated pre and post-treatment through MRI (Magnetic Resonance Irradiation) to follow-up bone marrow regeneration and TMJ disc placement. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), measurement equipment and IO (Intraoral Orthotic) were used to evaluate and treat the patients. A critical review of literature has also b…

Determinants of homonym and synonym rates of record linkage in disease registration.

1996

AbstractReliable record linkage is an essential component of the quality of population-based disease registration. Quality assessment of disease registries should, therefore, include quantitative approaches to describe the extent of record-linkage errors. The homonym and synonym rates have been proposed for this purpose. The homonym rate quantifies the proportion of distinct patients excluded from registration due to erroneous linkage with other patients. The synonym rate quantifies the proportion of unrecognized duplicate notifications on patients already registered in the registry. This paper provides an algebraic assessment of the determinants of both rates. It is shown how the homonym a…

Le spine di Afranio: a proposito di Afran. fr. 1 R.3

2022

In fr. I R.3 (Afranius’ Abducta) we can recognise an imagery connected to the rhetorical-philosophical Stoic tradition. Indeed, the adjective senticosus introduces the metaphor of thorns, a stylistic device associated with the Stoic sermo. This interpretation seems to be confirmed by Apuleius’ use of this adjective in Florida 18, which contains the famous ‘sophism of Protagoras’.

Epilepsy in the Elderly

2009

Epilepsy is the third most common disease affecting the brain in the elderly. Current demographic trends will lead to an increased prevalence of epilepsy in the general population.A selective literature search revealed 102 relevant publications as of September 2008, 50 of which were original articles. The level of evidence was found to be very low. No guidelines, systematic reviews or meta-analyses are available, and there have been only three randomized, double-blind trials of treatment for epilepsy in the elderly. The seizures often escape clinical attention, because premonitory symptoms (aura) and secondary generalization into tonic-clonic seizures are both rarer in older patients. On the…

Semantically enriched informed environment for multi-agent simulation : application to simulation in 3D virtual environment

2014

This thesis focuses on multi-agent simulation applied to the simulation of individuals in virtual 3D buildings. To do this, our work suggests to capitalize on the experience gained in the field of semantic web ontologies and inference engines to facilitate the design and development of intelligent behavior for agents operating in virtual worlds. The goal is to provide to agents a generic approach to managing their representation of the world and reason about this representation. For this, the central problem is based on the definition of a decidable ontology modeling all of the knowledge contained in the virtual 3D environment to enrich semantically the environment of a multi-agent simulati…

Determination of the modulus of elasticity of bone material by an acoustical approach at the forearm distinguishes women with and without vertebral f…

2002

The modulus of elasticity is a parameter characterizing fracture stability of bone independent of bone mineral density. Measurement of acoustical properties of the forearm by determination of the resonant frequency of the ulna in longitudinal direction as a function of sound transmission velocity after adjustment of the measuring result by ulna length yields information about the modulus of elasticity. It was the aim of this study to investigate whether this parameter may distinguish between subjects with and without vertebral fractures independent of bone mineral density. Fifty females (61.1 +/- 9.1 years) were enrolled into the study, 25 with, and 25 age-matched without prevalent osteopor…
