Interazioni tra migranti e popolazioni locali nella Sicilia centrale del IV sec. a.C.
2017
The contribution concern the hinterland of Sicily in the 4th century BC, particularly the part delimited by the rivers Halykos and Himeras, inhabited by the Sicans since prehistoric times. The few testimonies of the historical sources about this population of anellenic origin for the given period are compared to the news derived from the analysis of numismatic documents found in the territory in the contest of 4th century BC. The analysis will allow to take account of the prevailing conservatism of these communities, despite interactions with the peninsular groups established in this part of the island in the second half of the 4th century a.C.
Gli Indigeni e la moneta. Rinvenimenti monetali e associazioni contestuali dai centri dell’entroterra siciliano
2012
The Sicilian hinterland and, in particular, the territory of the current province of Caltanissetta, during the archaeological investigations of the last sixty years, has returned a substantial monetary documentation. The analysis of these coins, conducted in parallel with that of the materials found in the relative archaeological contexts, has allowed us to draw significant considerations on the "monetary uses" of the anellenic populations of this part of Sicily. Despite, starting from the last twenty-five years of the fifth century a. C., coins spread more and more in this territory, it seems that these communities never fully understood the original structure of this exchange instrument a…
Electrochemical analysis of the first Polish coins using voltammetry of immobilized particles
2017
[EN] A series of 20 denarii from Boleslaus the Brave (992-1025) and Mieszko II Lambert (1025-1034), corresponding to the beginning of the Polish state were studied using the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) methodology. VIMP experiments, applied to nanosamples of the corrosion layers of the coins in contact with aqueous acetate buffer, provided well-defined responses mainly corresponding to the corrosion products of copper and lead. Such voltammetric responses, combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy experiments performed on the same set of coins, and complemented by focusing ion beam-field emission scanning electron microscope (FIB-FESEM) on silver coins from the 19t…
Osservazioni sulle emissioni di argento non frazionarie di Panormos e a legenda ṣyṣ nel V secolo a. C.
2021
The main objective of this study is to make observations about the modes of production of the 5th century BC non-fractional silver coinage with the Greek legend Panormos (and variants) and with Punic legend ṣyṣ. The reconstruction of the dies sequences published by G. Kenneth Jenkins in 1971 and its recent updates will be considered above all. Instead, the identification of the issuing authority and the mint of the coins with legend ṣyṣ through the origin and the meaning of the term ṣyṣ and through the analysis of the bilingual emissions ṣyṣ -Panormos takes on a secondary importance. In this regard, only the suggestions that emerge from the examination of the succession of dies are collecte…
We study the important fi nding of a Merovingian denarius from Masilia (Marseille) in the Catalan city of Tarragona (Spain). Due to the scarcity of this coinage, not only in the Iberian Peninsula, we believe that its publicatio…
Tesserae frumentariae, nummariae et ‘Spintriae’ Hispaniae. Hallazgos y nuevas perspectivas
2019
This paper aims at presenting a series of unpublished imperial tesserae, originating from various Spanish institutions and sites, although most of the pieces have been found in present-day Andalusia. These tesserae are not only of the erotic type, commonly known as ‘ (sρintriαe)’, but also bear imperial busts and ludic scenes. All these tokens can be related to the incipient municipalization of Baetica and, therefore, its direct connection to Italy. But we also know that throughout the 1st and 2nd centuries AD there were ludi in Hispania. Except for Pollentia (Majorca), the tesserae seem to originate mainly from the city of Rome ; their import to the Iberian Peninsula was carried out by leg…
This paper deals with the dot mark engraved in some dies for striking archaic Ampuritan silver fractions with head of ram on the obverse and dotted cross on the reverse. These marks continue being a puzzle, though we discard the possibility that they have a metrological value to identify denominations
