Direct mass measurements and ionization potential measurements of the actinides

Abstract The precise determination of atomic and nuclear properties such as masses, differential charge radii, nuclear spins, electromagnetic moments and the ionization potential of the actinides has been extended to the late actinides in recent years. In particular, laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry have reached the region of heavy actinides that can only be produced only at accelerator facilities. The new results provide deeper insight into the impact of relativistic effects on the atomic structure and the evolution of nuclear shell effects around the deformed neutron shell closure at N = 152. The research reactor TRIGA Mainz – a strong and versatile neutron source for science and education

Abstract The TRIGA Mark II-reactor at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of three research reactors in Germany. The TRIGA Mainz became first critical on August 3rd, 1965. It can be operated in the steady state mode with a maximum power of 100 kWth and in the pulse mode with a peak power of 250 MWth and a pulse length of 30 ms. The TRIGA Mainz is equipped with a central thimble, a rotary specimen rack, three pneumatic transfer systems, four beam tubes, and a graphite thermal column. The TRIGA Mainz is intensively used both for basic and applied research in nuclear chemistry and nuclear physics. Two sources for ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) are operational at two beam ports. At …

This article concerns the following problem: given a family of partial differential operators with similar structure and given a continuous mapping f from an open set Ω in Rn into Rn, then when does f pull back the solutions of one equation in the family to solutions of another equation in that family? This problem is typical in the theory of differential equations when one wants to use a coordinate change to study solutions in a different environment.

First moments of the nucleon generalized parton distributions from lattice QCD

2012

We report on our lattice calculations of the nucleon's generalized parton distributions (GPDs), concentrating on their first moments for the case of N_f=2. Due to recent progress on the numerical side we are able to present results for the generalized form factors at pion masses as low as 260 MeV. We perform a fit to one-loop covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with encouraging results.

Nucleon mass and pion-nucleon sigma term from a chiral analysis of lattice QCD world data

The chiral behavior of the nucleon mass is studied within the covariant SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory up to order p4. Lattice QCD data for the ensembles of 2 and 2 + 1 flavors are separately fitted, paying special attention to explicit Δ(1232) degrees of freedom, finite volume corrections and finite spacing effects. In the case of the 2 flavor ensemble, we fit simultaneously nucleon mass data together with new and updated data for the σπN term both in their dimensionless forms and determine a Sommer-scale of r0 = 0.493(23) fm. APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14: Data and Analysis

Data and analysis methodology used for the SDSS/APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14 are described, highlighting differences from the DR12 analysis presented in Holtzman (2015). Some improvement in the handling of telluric absorption and persistence is demonstrated. The derivation and calibration of stellar parameters, chemical abundances, and respective uncertainties are described, along with the ranges over which calibration was performed. Some known issues with the public data related to the calibration of the effective temperatures (DR13), surface gravity (DR13 and DR14), and C and N abundances for dwarfs (DR13 and DR14) are highlighted. International audience; Neutron imaging and tomography allow observing the structure of large objects (from few to hundred centimeters) at a resolution around 100 μm. This non-destructive method is based on the detection of the transmission of a neutron beam through an object in 2D (imaging) or 3D after rotating the sample (tomography). Antineutrino monitoring of spent nuclear fuel

Military and civilian applications of nuclear energy have left a significant amount of spent nuclear fuel over the past 70 years. Currently, in many countries world wide, the use of nuclear energy is on the rise. Therefore, the management of highly radioactive nuclear waste is a pressing issue. In this letter, we explore antineutrino detectors as a tool for monitoring and safeguarding nuclear waste material. We compute the flux and spectrum of antineutrinos emitted by spent nuclear fuel elements as a function of time, and we illustrate the usefulness of antineutrino detectors in several benchmark scenarios. Model building on the non-factorisable type IIA T6/(Z4×ΩR) orientifold

We construct global semi-realistic supersymmetric models with intersecting D6-branes on the non-factorisable orientifold . The non-factorisable structure gives rise to differences compared to the factorisable case: additional conditions for the three-cycles to be Lagrangian and extra constraints on the wrapping numbers for building fractional cycles.
