Precision measurement of D meson mass differences

Using three- and four-body decays of D mesons produced in semileptonic b-hadron decays, precision measurements of D meson mass differences are made together with a measurement of the D-0 mass. The measurements are based on a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at 7 TeV. Using the decay D-0 -> K+K-K-pi(+), the D-0 mass is measured to be M(D-0) = 1864.75 +/- 0.15 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst) MeV/c(2). The mass differences M(D+) - M(D-0) = 4.76 +/- 0.12 (stat) +/- 0.07 (syst) MeV/c(2), M(D-s(+)) - M(D+) = 98.68 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.04 (syst) MeV/c(2) are measured using the D-0 -> K+K-pi(+)pi(-) and D-(s)(+) -> K+K-pi(+) modes.

A readout unit for high rate applications

The LHCb readout unit (RU) is a custom entry stage to the readout network of a data-acquisition or trigger system. It performs subevent building from multiple link inputs toward a readout network via a PCI network interface or alternatively toward a high-speed link, via an S-link interface. Incoming event fragments are derandomized, buffered and assembled into single subevents. This process is based on a low-overhead framing convention and matching of equal event numbers. Programmable logic is used both in the input and output stages of the RU module, which may be configured either as a data-link multiplexer or as entry stage to a readout or trigger network. Selective properties of neutron transfer reactions in the 90Zr + 208Pb system for the population of excited states in zirconium isotopes

Abstract Nuclei produced via multineutron transfer channels have been studied in 90 Zr + 208 Pb close to the Coulomb barrier energy in a fragment- γ coincident measurement employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to the CLARA γ -array. The selective properties of the reaction mechanism have been discussed in terms of states and their strength excited in the neutron transfer channels leading to 89–94 Zr isotopes. A strong population of yrast states, with energies up to ∼7.5 MeV has been observed.

Self-Radiolysis of Tritiated Water: Experimental Study and Simulation

Radioactive decay of tritium contained in tritiated water leads to the production of gaseous helium and, through self-radiolysis, to the formation of molecular hydrogen and oxygen. For safety management of tritiated water storage, it is essential to be able to predict pressure increase resulting from this phenomenon. The present study aims to identify the mechanisms that take place in self-radiolysis of chemically pure liquid tritiated water. General balance functions of identified charged hadron pairs of (π,K,p) in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

First measurements of balance functions (BFs) of all combinations of identified charged hadron (π,K,p) pairs in Pb−Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV recorded by the ALICE detector are presented. The BF measurements are carried out as two-dimensional differential correlators versus the relative rapidity (Δy) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) of hadron pairs, and studied as a function of collision centrality. The Δφ dependence of BFs is expected to be sensitive to the light quark diffusivity in the quark−gluon plasma. Spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma

We develop a method to obtain fermion spectral functions non-perturbatively in a non-Abelian gauge theory with high occupation numbers of gauge fields. After recovering the free field case, we extract the spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma close to its non-thermal fixed point, i.e., in a self-similar regime of the non-equilibrium dynamics. We find good agreement with hard loop perturbation theory for medium-induced masses, dispersion relations and quasiparticle residues. We also extract the full momentum dependence of the damping rate of the collective excitations.

The effect of the in-medium Θ+ pentaquark on the kaon optical potential

The kaon nuclear optical potential is studied including the effect of the $\Theta^+$ pentaquark. The one-nucleon contribution is obtained using an extension of the J\"ulich meson-exchange potential as bare kaon-nucleon interaction. Significant differences between a fully self-consistent calculation and the usually employed low-density $T\rho$ approach are observed. The influence of the one-nucleon absorption process, $K N \to \Theta^+$, on the kaon optical potential is negligible due to the small width of the pentaquark. In contrast, the two-nucleon mechanism, $K N N \to \Theta^+ N$, estimated from the coupling of the pentaquark to a two-meson cloud, provides the required amount of addition…

Impact of dijet and D-meson data from 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions on nuclear PDFs

We discuss the new constraints on gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in lead nucleus, derivable with the Hessian PDF reweighting method from the 5.02 TeV p+Pb measurements of dijet (CMS) and $D^0$-meson (LHCb) nuclear modification ratios. The impact is found to be significant, placing stringent constraints in the mid- and previously unconstrained small-$x$ regions. The CMS dijet data confirm the existence of gluon anti-shadowing and the onset of small-$x$ shadowing, as well as reduce the gluon PDF uncertainties in the larger-$x$ region. Bayesian PDF reweighting meets the Hessian methods

Volume: 273 New data coming from the LHC experiments have a potential to extend the current knowledge of parton distribution functions (PDFs). As a short cut to the cumbersome and time consuming task of performing a new PDF fit, re weighting methods have been proposed. In this talk, we introduce the so-called Hessian re-weighting, valid for PDF fits that carried out a Hessian error analysis, and compare it with the better-known Bayesian methods. We determine the existence of an agreement between the two approaches, and illustrate this using the inclusive jet production at the LHC. Peer reviewed

PDF reweighting in the Hessian matrix approach

We introduce the Hessian reweighting of parton distribution functions (PDFs). Similarly to the better-known Bayesian methods, its purpose is to address the compatibility of new data and the quantitative modifications they induce within an existing set of PDFs. By construction, the method discussed here applies to the PDF fits that carried out a Hessian error analysis using a non-zero tolerance $\Delta\chi^2$. The principle is validated by considering a simple, transparent example. We are also able to establish an agreement with the Bayesian technique provided that the tolerance criterion is appropriately accounted for and that a purely exponential Bayesian likelihood is assumed.
