Double pion photoproduction on the nucleon: study of the isospin channels
1995
A model for the gamma p ----> pion+ pion- p reaction developed earlier is extended to account for all isospin channels. The model includes N, Delta(1232), N^*(1440) and N^*(1520) as intermediate baryonic states and the rho-meson as an intermediate two pion resonance. Although many terms contribute to the cross section, some channels exhibit particular sensitivity to certain mechanisms of resonance excitation or decay and the reactions provide novel information on such mechanisms. In particular the gamma N ----> N^*(1520) ----> Delta(1232) pion process affects all the channels and is a key ingredient in the interpretation of the data. Comparison is made with all available data and t…
Role of correlated two-pion exchange in $K^+ N$ scattering
1995
A dynamical model for S-- and P--wave correlated $2 \pi$ (and $K \bar K$) exchange between a kaon and a nucleon is presented, starting from corresponding $N \bar N \rightarrow K \bar K$ amplitudes in the pseudophysical region, which have been constructed from nucleon, $\Delta$--isobar and hyperon ($\Lambda$, $\Sigma$) exchange Born terms and a realistic meson exchange model of the $\pi \pi \rightarrow K \bar K$ and $K \bar K \rightarrow K \bar K$ amplitude. The contribution in the s--channel is then obtained by performing a dispersion relation over the unitarity cut. In the $\rho$--channel, considerable ambiguities exist, depending on how the dispersion integral is performed. Our model, sup…
Electromagnetic investigations of nucleon resonances and sum rules
2000
Abstract Pion photoproduction is analyzed by dispersion relations at fixed t . The results for s-wave production at threshold and p-wave production in the Δ(1232) resonance region are compared to the experimental data. These investigations are extended to the case of pion electroproduction in the framework of the Unitary Isobar Model. Recent developments to explore the spin structure of the nucleon by double-polarization observables are summarized, and new results for the spin polarizability, the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and related sum rules are presented.
Isospin dependence of the three-nucleon force
2004
We classify $A$--nucleon forces according to their isospin dependence and discuss the most general isospin structure of the three--nucleon force. We derive the leading and subleading isospin--breaking corrections to the three--nucleon force using the framework of chiral effective field theory.
Spin-dipole nuclear matrix elements for double beta decays and astro-neutrinos
2014
Spin-dipole (SD) nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) M±(SD2) for unique first forbidden β±2−→0+ ground-state-to-ground-state transitions are studied by using effective microscopic two-nucleon interactions in realistic single-particle model spaces. The observed values of the NMEs Mexp±(SD2) are compared with the values of the single-quasiparticle NMEs Mqp±(SD2) without nucleon spin–isospin (στ) correlation and the QRPA NMEs MQRPA±(SD2) with the στ correlation. The observed SD matrix elements are found to be reduced by the factor k≈0.2 with respect to Mqp±(SD2) and by the factor kNM≈0.5 with respect to MQRPA±(SD2). We then infer that the SD NME is reduced considerably partly by the nucleon στ corr…
Kaon condensation in proto-neutron star matter
2000
We study the equation of state (EOS) of kaon-condensed matter including the effects of temperature and trapped neutrinos. It is found that the order of the phase transition to a kaon-condensed phase, and whether or not Gibbs' rules for phase equilibrium can be satisfied in the case of a first order transition, depend sensitively on the choice of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The main effect of finite temperature, for any value of the lepton fraction, is to mute the effects of a first order transition, so that the thermodynamics becomes similar to that of a second order transition. Above a critical temperature, found to be at least 30--60 MeV depending upon the interaction, the first order t…
The two particle-phonon multiplet ?h 11/2 ?f 7/2 3? and higher-lying four-nucleon yrast states in the doubly-odd nucleus 146 63 Eu83
1988
From in-beamγ-ray measurements we have established the high-spin states in146Eu up to 3.5 MeV excitation andIπ=(15+). The highest levels observed are formed by alignment of four nucleons, involving excitation of the144Sm core. Negative-parity states at about 2 MeV are classified asπh11/2νf7/2 × 3− octupole excitations. Quantitative analyses for the octupole multiplet members and for theν=4 states based on empirical data from neighbouring nuclei are presented.
K+Λ and K+Σ0 photoproduction with fine center-of-mass energy resolution
2014
Measurements of γp→K+Λγp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0γp→K+Σ0 cross-sections have been obtained with the photon tagging facility and the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI-C. The measurement uses a novel K+K+ meson identification technique in which the weak decay products are characterized using the energy and timing characteristics of the energy deposit in the calorimeter, a method that has the potential to be applied at many other facilities. The fine center-of-mass energy (W) resolution and statistical accuracy of the new data results in a significant impact on partial wave analyses aiming to better establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon. The new analyses disfavor a strong role for quark–diqua…
Structure analysis of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude at low energies
1998
We analyze virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon at low energies in a covariant, model-independent formalism. We define a set of invariant functions which, once the irregular nucleon pole terms have been subtracted in a gauge-invariant fashion, is free of poles and kinematical zeros. The covariant treatment naturally allows one to implement the constraints due to Lorentz and gauge invariance, crossing symmetry, and the discrete symmetries. In particular, when applied to the $ep\to e'p'\gamma$ reaction, charge-conjugation symmetry in combination with nucleon crossing generates four relations among the ten originally proposed generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon.
The isospin structure of photoproduction of πη pairs from the nucleon in the threshold region
2015
Abstract Photoproduction of πη-pairs from nucleons has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of ≈ 1.4 GeV. The quasi-free reactions γ p → p π 0 η , γ n → n π 0 η , γ p → n π + η , and γ n → p π − η were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the γ p → n π + η reaction was measured for the first time). For the π 0 η final state coherent production via the γ d → d π 0 η reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the …
