Convective Instability in a Horizontal Porous Channel with Permeable and Conducting Side Boundaries

The heating from below is modelled by a uniform flux, while the top wall is assumed to be isothermal. The side boundaries are considered as permeable and perfectly conducting. The linear stability of the basic state is studied for the normal mode perturbations. A Chemical Index Inspired by Biological Plastic Evolution:  Valence-Isoelectronic Series of Aromatics

Plastic evolution is a new perspective of the evolutionary process conjugating the effect, on one hand, of the acquired characters and, on the other, of the relationships that emerge among the principle of evolutionary indeterminacy, the principle of morphologic determination, and natural selection. Plastic evolution is applied to design the coordination index Ic. Ic is used to characterize the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, and styrene and compared to charge indices for dipole moment. Generation of self-induced-transparency gap solitons by modulational instability in uniformly doped fiber Bragg gratings

We consider the continuous-wave (cw) propagation through a fiber Bragg grating that is uniformly doped with two-level resonant atoms. Wave propagation is governed by a system of nonlinear coupled-mode Maxwell-Bloch (NLCM-MB) equations. We identify modulational instability (MI) conditions required for the generation of ultrashort pulses in both anomalous and normal dispersion regimes. From a detailed linear stability analysis, we find that the atomic detuning frequency has a strong influence on the MI. Three-dimensional field distribution in the focal region of low-Fresnel-number axicons.

Three-dimensional intensity and phase distributions generated by microaxicons are evaluated in the low-Fresnel-number regime. Apertured and nonapertured conical wavefronts may generate transverse patterns with notable deviations from the expected nondiffracting Bessel beam. First-order analytical expressions are proposed for the evaluation of the wave field produced by axicons of different Fresnel number in the focal region.

Talbot array illuminators with binary phase gratings

WAVELET ANALYSIS OF THE MULTIFRACTAL CHARACTER OF THE GALAXY DISTRIBUTION

We have determined generalized dimensions of the observed distribution of galaxies. Their different values indicate that this distribution may be described as a multifractal. In order to analyse this distribution further, we have applied local wavelet transforms. Wavelets provide us with an interesting tool to analyse the large-scale structure which can be mathematically quantified and intuitively visualized. Comparing the results of these transforms at different dilation factors helps to visualize more clearly the nearly singular nature of the distribution. This method also allows us to determine the range of the local density power laws

Obtaining the Weyl tensor from the Bel-Robinson tensor

The algebraic study of the Bel-Robinson tensor proposed and initiated in a previous work (Gen. Relativ. Gravit. {\bf 41}, see ref [11]) is achieved. The canonical form of the different algebraic types is obtained in terms of Bel-Robinson eigen-tensors. An algorithmic determination of the Weyl tensor from the Bel-Robinson tensor is presented.

Direct Observation in 3d of Structural Crossover in Binary Hard Sphere Mixtures

For binary fluid mixtures of spherical particles in which the two species are sufficiently different in size, the dominant wavelength of oscillations of the pair correlation functions is predicted to change from roughly the diameter of the large species to that of the small species along a sharp crossover line in the phase diagram [C. Grodon, M. Dijkstra, R. Evans & R. Roth, J.Chem.Phys. 121, 7869 (2004)]. Using particle-resolved colloid experiments in 3d we demonstrate that crossover exists and that its location in the phase diagram is in quantitative agreement with the results of both theory and our Monte-Carlo simulations. Bose condensates at high angular momenta

We exploit the analogy with the Quantum Hall (QH) system to study weakly interacting bosons in a harmonic trap. For a $\delta$-function interaction potential the ``yrast'' states with $L\ge N(N-1)$ are degenerate, and we show how this can be understood in terms of Haldane exclusion statistics. We present spectra for 4 and 8 particles obtained by numerical and algebraic methods, and demonstrate how a more general hard-core potential lifts the degeneracies on the yrast line. The exact wavefunctions for N=4 are compared with trial states constructed from composite fermions (CF), and the possibility of using CF-states to study the low L region at high N is discussed.

Study of the stretching modes of the arsine molecule

Abstract To study local mode XY 3 molecules, we use properties of the group chain U ( 4 ) ⊃ U ( 3 ) ⊃ K ( 3 ) ⊃ S ( 3 ) ≈ C 3 v . For the Hamiltonian, we deduce diagonal terms and coupling terms between bonds. We analyze the stretching modes of the arsine molecule. An algebraic transition operator is built and applied to the same molecular system.
