Rotational Three-Body Resonances: A New Adiabatic Approach

2001

In the standard adiabatic approach the motion of the fast, light particle (electron) is treated so as to produce an effective potential that governs the motion of the heavy particles (nuclei). The rotational degrees of freedom are then taken into account by adding the centrifugal J(J + 1)-term to the channel potentials and introducing rotational (Coriolis) couplings into conventional close-coupling calculations. Of course, a perturbative treatment of the rotational motion is justified only provided the rotational energy is sufficiently small. If, however, the rotation is as energetic as the motion of the fast particle, both motions should be treated on the same footing in order to produce s…

Fourier-transform spectroscopy and coupled-channels deperturbation treatment of theA 1Σ+–b 3Πcomplex of KCs

2010

The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) A {sup 1{Sigma}+}-b {sup 3{Pi}{yields}}X {sup 1{Sigma}+} spectra of the KCs molecule were recorded in a near infrared region by a Fourier-transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.03 cm{sup -1}. Overall more than 200 collisionally enhanced LIF spectra were rotationally assigned to {sup 39}K{sup 133}Cs and {sup 41}K{sup 133}Cs isotopomers yielding more than 3400 rovibronic term values of the strongly mixed singlet A {sup 1{Sigma}+} and triplet b {sup 3{Pi}} states with the uncertainty of 0.003-0.01 cm{sup -1}. Experimental data massive starts from the lowest vibrational level v{sub A}=0 of the singlet and nonuniformly covers the energy range E is an e…

A Model for Carbon Macrosegregation

1988

In this paper we present models for calculating temperature distribution and macrosegregations for solidification problem in continuous casting of steel. Numerical examples illustrate the importance of liquid flow as a cause for segregations.

Magnetic Control of Convection in Liquid Metal Heated from Above

1999

We investigated experimentally the buoyancy driven convection induced by localized central heating from above in cylindrical tanks filled with liquid metal eutectic alloy (low-Prandtl-number liquid). The experiments were carried out for two aspect ratios A = (radius/height) = 4.125 and 0.333. Time-averaged local temperature distributions and radial and azimuthal velocity components in the liquid at different distances from heater axis were measured. It is shown that maximum temperature gradient is centered in vicinity heater. Temperature difference in radial direction creates pressure gradient between heater and cold wall regions. This gradient leads to upraising of liquid nearly heater and…

Gas-Fluidization Characteristics of Binary Mixtures of Particles in 2D Geometry

2012

The bubbling behaviour of fluidized beds has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades by means of several techniques, e.g. X-ray, Inductance, Resistance and Impedance based techniques, PIV. In recent years, Digital Image Analysis Techniques have shown their potential for accurate and cost effectively measurements. Most of the work related to bubble behaviour analysis deals with single-sized particles, while almost all industrial equipment operates with multi-sized particles. Although considerable work has been done in the past with focus on the analysis of the mixing-segregation behaviour and predictions of fluid dynamics regime transitions, a lack of knowledge still exists in the an…

Capillary pressure, hysteresis and residual saturation in porous media

2006

Abstract A macroscopic theory for capillarity in porous media is presented. The capillary pressure function in this theory is not an input parameter but an outcome. The theory is based on introducing the trapped or residual saturations as state variables. It allows to predict spatiotemporal changes in residual saturation. The theory yields process dependence and hysteresis in capillary pressure as its main result.

Thermal Diffusion and Particle Separation in Ferrocolloids

1999

Results of experiments on thermal diffusion in ferrocolloids are discussed in the paper. The Soret coefficient is evaluated from measurements of particle separation in thermodiffusion column. To interpret the separation curves measured in the presence of a magnetic field, the column theory is modified taking into account for MHD effects of free convection. It is shown that the Hartmann effect in hydrocarbon based colloids as well in ionic magnetic fluids does not influence significantly the particle separation dynamics. From unsteady separation curves positive values of the Soret coefficient of surfacted particles in tetradecane based colloids are calculated. Such direction of particle tran…

Studies on Instabilities and Patterns in Evaporating Liquids at Reduced Pressure and/or Microwave Irradiation

1990

This paper summarizes our recent experimental and theoretical work on the instabilities in liquids and at interfaces which form during evaporation at reduced pressure and/or microwave irradiation. We have observed a variety of patterns (Benard rolls, Marangoni waves, Hickman interface deformations) which depend on the value of the reduced pressure and the power of the incident beam.

A Study for Cloud Parameter Retrieval from the IR Cloud Cameras of the AUGER Observatory

2009

The Pierre Auger Observatory operative in Argentina, studies the ultra-high energy cosmic rays with energies above 1018eV. The atmosphere is also monitored by a collection of different instruments. In this paper we present a study on the retrieval of the cloud coverage from the atmospheric monitoring data collected by the four IR cloud cameras placed in the sites of the Observatory. We discuss two different algorithms that supply pixel by pixel cloudiness information in the form of binary masks. The final objective of the study is collecting different algorithms to obtain a reliable set that allow to overcome most of the more frequent ambiguities due to particular cloud configurations and a…
