The external wall is assumed to exchange heat with an external environment thermally stratified in the vertical direction. Geoid effects in a convecting system with lateral viscosity variations

The geoid signal and the flow patterns of two-dimensional steady state convection models with exponential temperature- and depth dependent viscosity are compared with results for an equivalent stratified viscosity structure. In analogy to Richards and Hager [1989], the latter are computed by a “dynamic response” approach. The flow fields obtained with this approach are quite different from the full solution; the geoid signals are similar but the amplitudes differ significantly. AbstractMicro-convection caused by ponderomotive forces of the self-magnetic field of a magnetic fluid in the Hele-Shaw cell under the action of a vertical homogeneous magnetic field is studied both experimentally and numerically. It is shown that a non-potential magnetic force at magnetic Rayleigh numbers greater than the critical value causes fingering at the interface between the miscible magnetic and non-magnetic fluids. The threshold value of the magnetic Rayleigh number depends on the smearing of the interface between fluids. We consider convection in a horizontal porous layer of uniform thickness which is heated from below and which is composed of two anisotropic sublayers with principal axes lying in the three coordinate directions. The aim is to determine criteria for the onset of convection by finding the critical Rayleigh number, wavenumber and roll orientation relative to the coordinate axes. The full set of nondimensional parameters has at least six members even when the sublayers are considered to be thermally isotropic, and therefore, we select some special cases in order to illuminate the type of qualitative behaviour which may be expected. Magnetic field driven micro-convection in the Hele-Shaw cell: the Brinkman model and its comparison with experiment

International audience; The micro-convection caused by the ponderomotive forces of the self-magnetic field in a magnetic fluid is studied here both numerically and experimentally. The theoretical approach based on the general Brinkman model substantially improves the description with respect to the previously proposed Darcy model. The predictions of both models are here compared to finely controlled experiments. The Brinkman model, in contrast to the Darcy model, allows us to describe the formation of mushrooms on the plumes of the micro-convective flow and the width of the fingers. Abstract Because of its relevance to many geological and technical problems, hydrothermal convection is investigated here mainly with the aid of numerical models by a systematic analysis of the properties of this type of convection for a range of super-critical Rayleigh numbers. International audience; Influence of a slowly rotating 0.5 T transverse magnetic field on the directionally solidified metallic alloy has been experimentally studied in this work. Main idea is to study an influence on the melt flow and material structure caused by the simultaneous electromagnetic stirring and thermoelectromagnetic convection with comparable magnitudes. Electromagnetic stirring and thermoelectromagnetic convection intensities have been estimated analytically to find optimal experimental parameters.
