Symbolic dynamics in a binary asteroid system

2020

We highlight the existence of a topological horseshoe arising from a a--priori stable model of the binary asteroid dynamics. The inspection is numerical and uses correctly aligned windows, as described in a recent paper by A. Gierzkiewicz and P. Zgliczy\'nski, combined with a recent analysis of an associated secular problem.

A simple experiment to characterize material formability in tube hydroforming

2001

Abstract In tube hydroforming processes an internal fluid pressure is utilized to form the material on a properly shaped die; during the process the material axial movement is favoured by the axial feeding of an active punch. In the paper a simple experiment is presented aimed to investigate the influence of the main process variables on material formability. This equipment has enabled an extensive experimental investigation; furthermore a numerical analysis based on the finite element technique has been performed and a ductile fracture criterion has been implemented to predict the insurgence of bursting defects.

Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains

2022

AbstractWe have theoretically investigated the phenomenon of Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns arising in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains, in both supercritical and subcritical regime. Adopting multiple-scale weakly-nonlinear analysis, we have deduced the cubic and cubic–quintic real Ginzburg–Landau equations ruling the evolution of pattern amplitude close to criticality. Starting from these envelope equations, we have provided the explicit expressions of the most relevant dynamical features characterizing primary and secondary quantized branches of any order: stationary amplitude, existence and stability thresholds and linear growth rate. Particular em…

Coaxial Slot Antenna Design for Microwave Hyperthermia using Finite- Difference Time-Domain and Finite Element Method

2011

Hyperthermia also called thermal therapy or thermotherapy is a type of cancer treatment in which body tissue is exposed to high temperatures. Research has shown that high temperatures can damage and kill cancer cells, usually with minimal injury to normal tissues. Otherwise, ablation or high temperature hyperthermia, including lasers and the use of radiofrequency, microwaves, and high-intensity focused ultrasound, are gaining attention as an alternative to standard sur- gical therapies. The electromagnetic microwave irradiation applied to the tumor tissue causes water molecules to vibrate and rotate, resulting in tissue heating and subsequently cell death via thermal-induced protein denatur…

Numerical simulation of unsteady MHD flows and applications

2009

International audience; We present a robust numerical method for solving the compressible Ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamic equations. It is based on the Residual Distribution (RD) algorithms already successfully tested in many problems. We adapted the scheme to the multi-dimensional unsteady MHD model. The constraint ∇ · B = 0 is enforced by the use a Generalized Lagrange Multiplier (GLM) technique. First, we present this complete system and the keys to get its eigensystem, as we may need it in the algorithm. Next, we introduce the numerical scheme built in order to get a compressible, unsteady and implicit solver which has good shock-capturing properties and is second-order accurate at the conve…

Bòvedas tabicadas: experimental and numerical analysis

2008

A class of thin vaults, the so-called “bovedas tabicadas”, which represent one of the most common Spanish traditional building techniques at the end of XIX century are studied here, treating the relevant analysis problem through a numerical, as well as an experimental, approach. At first the problem is studied by searching for the behaviour of the material effecting suitable experiments. Once the constitutive behaviour of the materials and the structural elements are experimentally characterized, a semi inverse method for the identification of the optimum mechanical parameters to assign to an equivalent homogeneous ideal material through analysis reproducing the executed experimental tests …

Numerical methods to compute sentinels for parabolic systems with an application to source terms identification

1994

We apply the method of sentinels to the identification of source terms in parabolic systems. We present two numerical approaches; the first one is based on the solution of an optimal control problem, and the second one is based on the solution of a linear system of equations. In numerical experiments, we compare these approaches in terms of accuracy and computational cost.

Modeling wave propagation in elastic solids via high-order accurate implicit-mesh discontinuous Galerkin methods

2022

A high-order accurate implicit-mesh discontinuous Galerkin framework for wave propagation in single-phase and bi-phase solids is presented. The framework belongs to the embedded-boundary techniques and its novelty regards the spatial discretization, which enables boundary and interface conditions to be enforced with high-order accuracy on curved embedded geometries. High-order accuracy is achieved via high-order quadrature rules for implicitly-defined domains and boundaries, whilst a cell-merging strategy addresses the presence of small cut cells. The framework is used to discretize the governing equations of elastodynamics, written using a first-order hyperbolic momentum-strain formulation…
