A neutron point kinetic model for fusion relevant calculations

2012

Abstract In the framework of research activities on fusion reactors a great effort is dedicated by the scientific community to the development of tritium breeding blankets. One of the main goals is to assess the neutronic behaviour of such devices to analyse their tritium breeding performance and to evaluate the required data for their thermal–mechanic and thermal–hydraulic design. Many papers have been published on this topic considering some stationary condition to calculate such important quantities as heating power, gas production and dpa rates, tritium breeding ratio, etc., but not much attention has been focussed to neutronic transport analyses in transient conditions. The present pap…

HHT-α and TR-BDF2 schemes for dynamic contact problems

2023

This work focuses on the numerical performance of HHT-α and TR-BDF2 schemes for dynamic frictionless unilateral contact problems between an elastic body and a rigid obstacle. Nitsche's method, the penalty method, and the augmented Lagrangian method are considered to handle unilateral contact conditions. Analysis of the convergence of an opposed value of the parameter α for the HHT-α method is achieved. The mass redistribution method has also been tested and compared with the standard mass matrix. Numerical results for 1D and 3D benchmarks show the functionality of the combinations of schemes and methods used.

A review on some discrete variational techniques for the approximation of essential boundary conditions

2022

We review different techniques to enforce essential boundary conditions, such as the (nonhomogeneous) Dirichlet boundary condition, within a discrete variational framework, and especially techniques that allow to account for them in a weak sense. Those are of special interest for discretizations such as geometrically unfitted finite elements or high order methods, for instance. Some of them remain primal, and add extra terms in the discrete weak form without adding a new unknown: this is the case of the boundary penalty and Nitsche techniques. Others are mixed, and involve a Lagrange multiplier with or without stabilization terms. For a simple setting, we detail the different associated for…

Existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions of implicitly linear homogeneous Volterra integral equations

2011

We analyze collocation methods for nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity. We present different kinds of existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions and we give conditions for such existence and uniqueness in some cases. Finally we illustrate these methods with an example of a collocation problem, and we give some examples of collocation problems that do not fit in the cases studied previously.

A numerical study of the small dispersion limit of the Korteweg-de Vries equation and asymptotic solutions

2012

Abstract We study numerically the small dispersion limit for the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation u t + 6 u u x + ϵ 2 u x x x = 0 for ϵ ≪ 1 and give a quantitative comparison of the numerical solution with various asymptotic formulae for small ϵ in the whole ( x , t ) -plane. The matching of the asymptotic solutions is studied numerically.

Localization of hidden Chua's attractors

2011

Abstract The classical attractors of Lorenz, Rossler, Chua, Chen, and other widely-known attractors are those excited from unstable equilibria. From computational point of view this allows one to use numerical method, in which after transient process a trajectory, started from a point of unstable manifold in the neighborhood of equilibrium, reaches an attractor and identifies it. However there are attractors of another type: hidden attractors, a basin of attraction of which does not contain neighborhoods of equilibria . In the present Letter for localization of hidden attractors of Chuaʼs circuit it is suggested to use a special analytical–numerical algorithm.

Numerical methods for nonlinear inverse problems

1996

AbstractInverse problems of distributed parameter systems with applications to optimal control and identification are considered. Numerical methods and their numerical analysis for solving this kind of inverse problems are presented, main emphasis being on the estimates of the rate of convergence for various schemes. Finally, based on the given error estimates, a two-grid method and related algorithms are introduced, which can be used to solve nonlinear inverse problems effectively.

Calculation of nonlinear stationary magnetic field

1996

Currently, linear models of various physical fields can successfully be implemented numerically. Efficient numerical methods have been developed during last two or three decades and sufficiently capable computers are available. The situation is different with nonlinear models. There is no general numerical method for solving all nonlinear problems, and consequently every class of problems has to be investigated individually. The specific features of the class are taken into account in this process [Berger].

Entropy dissipation of moving mesh adaptation

2014

Non-uniform grids and mesh adaptation have become an important part of numerical approximations of differential equations over the past decades. It has been experimentally noted that mesh adaptation leads not only to locally improved solution but also to numerical stability of the underlying method. In this paper we consider nonlinear conservation laws and provide a method to perform the analysis of the moving mesh adaptation method, including both the mesh reconstruction and evolution of the solution. We moreover employ this method to extract sufficient conditions — on the adaptation of the mesh — that stabilize a numerical scheme in the sense of the entropy dissipation.
