In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieu���s theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school ��� a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value ��� is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents��� educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Musical activities in Palermo’s convents have so far received little scholarly attention, even though there is ample evidence of their importance. Indeed, in Palermo’s cloisters the promotion of music was able to go beyond architectural divisions and dissolve the conventional boundaries of space. Therefore, music acted as a powerful device of communication between the internal and external dimensions, as well as a means for asserting a social status which nuns and novices didn’t want to give up. In particular, three paintings – L’annunciazione di Recanati by Lorenzo Lotto, Ecce Ancilla Domini by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, The Annunciation by John William Waterhouse – allow in the analysis of announcement a reference to subjectivity as receiver which is grasped in its primordial passivity, but also in its capacity of answering and self-positioning in front of announcement.

Good English Pronunciation Users and Their Pronunciation Learning Strategies

The study investigates pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) deployed by those with good English pronunciation, as well as their beliefs concerning the variables that affect pronunciation competence. In order to collect data for analysis this study surveyed 61 participants who had learned English as a foreign language. They comprised 28 higher education teachers and scholars specialising in English phonetics and phonology, who were defined as good pronunciation users (GPU), and 33 EFL teacher training students, viewed as average pronunciation learners (APL). This quantitative research investigates the extent to which adult L2 learners act in line with what they declare to believe in regarding pronunciation learning.
