Intergenerational Interaction and the Benefits of Ageing Employees in a Nursing Home

This chapter explores how ageing employees contribute to intergenerational interaction in an organization from the organizational aesthetics perspective. The data is obtained using interviews with professionals who work at a municipal nursing home designed for older people. Qualitative analysis methods were based on the aesthetic categories of ugliness and grace. As a result, I present a positive example of how ageing employees’ sensitivity and ability to create powerful stories supported the whole work community’s interaction and courage to act.

The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the innovative nursing home voucher scheme that was introduced by the Valencia Autonomous Region of Spain in the early 1990s to implement targets laid down by the national plan for the development of older people's services. The article begins with a review of the evolution of Spanish social services, and especially the nursing home sector, and then summarises the genesis, objectives and characteristics of the voucher scheme. It is widely known that Alzheimer’s disease is burdened with strong prejudices with negative connotations. This may contribute to increase patient’s isolation and marginalization, and to render Nursing Homes places of confinement and seclusion. OBJECTIVES: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is aimed at describing older patients who are cared for in hospitals, home care or nursing homes in Italy. DESIGN: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is an observational multicenter prospective 1-year study. SETTING: Overall, 23 acute geriatric or internal medicine hospital units, 11 home care services and 31 nursing homes participated in the study.
