Placing metal micronutrients in context: transport and distribution in plants

Plants have developed finely tuned mechanisms to efficiently acquire and balance the concentrations of essential metal micronutrients including iron, zinc, copper, and manganese, both at the cellular and systemic levels. The application of new emerging technologies to the study of Arabidopsis thaliana is providing a novel spatiotemporal view of plant metal homeostasis. These advances are uncovering unexpected links of metal homeostasis to central cellular processes, such as compartmentalization, daily redox oscillations, or transcriptional regulation. Mathematical Modelling of In-sewer Processes as a Tool for Sewer System Design

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential impact of in-sewer processes (COD components transformation and hydrogen sulphide production) on the design of sewer systems. The tool used for such analysis is a mathematical model derived from the WATS model (Wastewater Aerobic/anaerobic Transformation in Sewers) able to describe the processes occurring in the sewer system both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Comparative study of phytoplankton in an oligotrophic soft water lake under different pH-phosphate ranges

This work reports phytoplankton changes in a shallow, acidic and oligotrophic lake (Loch Rusky, Scotland) from two different periods: one with artificial phosphate fertilization and neutral pH (SRP 3–18 µg l-1, pH 6.6–7.8, 1972–73) and the other with low phosphate and acidic pH values (SRP <1.5 µg l-1, pH 5.6–6.9, 1985–86). Phosphate enhanced markedly total algal biomass and favoured the presence of cyanophytes, especially in the summer epilimnion, while cryptophytes dominated at this time during unfertilized periods. Influence of carbon and nutrient additions on a decomposer food chain and the growth of pine seedlings in microcosms

Abstract Because of N deposition plant production is becoming increasingly limited by other nutrients in boreal forests. At the same time more C is suggested to become available for below-ground food webs because of enhanced CO2 fixation. We studied the effects of carbon and nutrient addition on a fungus–nematode food chain and on the growth of mycorrhizal or nonmycorrhizal pine seedlings (Pinus sylvestris L.) in microcosms with N-rich mineral soil and a humus layer. Asperuloside Enhances Taste Perception and Prevents Weight Gain in High-Fat Fed Mice

Asperuloside is an iridoid glycoside found in many medicinal plants that has produced promising anti-obesity results in animal models. In previous studies, three months of asperuloside administration reduced food intake, body weight, and adipose masses in rats consuming a high fat diet (HFD). However, the mechanisms by which asperuloside exerts its anti-obesity properties were not clarified. Here, we investigated homeostatic and nutrient-sensing mechanisms regulating food intake in mice consuming HFD. Diabetes-related nutrition knowledge and dietary intake among adults with type 2 diabetes.

Nutrition knowledge and skills enable individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) to make food choices that optimise metabolic self-management and quality of life. The present study examined the relationship between nutrition knowledge and skills, and nutrient intake in T2DM. Mineral nutrients in leaves and bast of pedunculate oak (Quercus Robur L.) at different states of defoliation

Abstract Adult oaks (age > 135a) with different grade of defoliation were investigated for their mineral nutrient contents in leaves and bast. In the leaves of the trees with a defoliation of more than 60 % lower concentrations of almost all nutrients were found. No differences were found between defoliation class 1 (defoliation ≤ 25 %) and defoliation class 2 (defoliation ≤ 45 %). In all defoliation classes the mineral nutrient contents are in the normal range except the contents of magnesium, which is in the range of deficiency in all defoliation classes.
