Microalgal biomass represents a potential third generation feedstock that could be utilised as a source of carbohydrates for fermentative production of a range of platform biochemicals. Identifying microalgal strains with high biomass and carbohydrate productivities while also being amenable to downstream processes is key in improving the feasibility of these processes. An environmental study by factor analysis of surface seawaters in the Gulf of Valencia (Western Mediterranean)

Abstract A study is made on the quality of coastal waters in the Gulf of Valencia (Spain) in terms of contamination markers including microbiological agents, toxic heavy metals and nutrients that adversely affect the environment. Relationships are also established between these factors and other physical and chemical parameters. Response of a shallow Mediterranean lake to nutrient diversion: does it follow similar patterns as in northern shallow lakes?

In view of the paucity of data on the response of warm shallow lakes to reductions in nutrient loading, this paper presents a long-term limnological data set to document changes in the food-web of a shallow Mediterranean lake (Lake Albufera, Valencia, Spain) that has experienced reductions in phosphorus (P) (77%) and nitrogen (N) (24%) loading following sewage diversion. 2. Nine years after sewage diversion, P concentration in the lake was reduced by 30% but remained high (TP = 0.34 mg L−1), although the mean water retention time in the lake was only 0.1 years. Distribution of aquatic Oligochaeta in the Finnish Lake District

The distribution of oligochaetes was examined at sampling stations grouped into three types: (1), in eutrophic and dystrophic areas or in areas polluted by pulp-mill wastewaters; (2), slightly eutrophic stations; (3), ‘clean’ stations unaffected by sewage or other inputs. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Potamothrix hammoniensis were practically the only species in group 1, and the same species accounted for two thirds of the total numbers in group 2, although Peloscolex ferox and some other species also occurred. First Report of Leaf Spot and Blight Caused by Ralstonia pickettii on Bird of Paradise Tree in Italy

Bird of Paradise tree (Strelitzia alba (L. f.) Skeels) is an ornamental perennial tropical plant grown in southern Italy. In the summer of 2006 and 2007, a widespread, severe leaf disease was observed on seedlings and 1- to 2-year-old plants in two glasshouses located in eastern Sicily. Disease incidence ranged from 10 to 25%. Symptoms on the leaves consisted of dark brown-to-black stripes of varying length and found between the lateral veins. Lesions sometimes coalesced into a large area of necrotic tissue. Symptomatic tissues were ground in a drop of sterile distilled water (SDW) with a scalpel. Seasonal Variation in Nutrient Status of Foxglove Leaves

The seasonal variation of mineral elements and the relationships among them were studied in natural populations of foxglove (Digitalis obscura). Young and mature leaves were collected in 10 different populations and on four sample dates (May, July, October, and February). Leaf mineral elements [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu)] were determined. The highest concentrations of N, P, and K in young leaf were recorded in May, followed by a decrease in the other months, while in contrast Ca and Fe showed the lowest concentration in May. Growth analysis and mineral content in pistachio (Pistacia veraL.) infructescence and its components

SummaryGrowth and seasonal variation in mineral content was described for infructescence components of ‘Bianca’ pistachio cultivar grafted onto Pistacia therebintus L. The absorption curve specific to each infructescence and fruit component was calculated on a percent dry weight and an absolute content basis. Nutrient uptake by infructescence components was consistent with their development rate. The embryo was the strongest sink for N, P and Mg uptake. Pericarp and rachis accounted for more than 80% of K and Ca accumulated in the infructescence. The highest accumulation rate occurred during rapid embryo growth.
