Therapeutic tools for oral candidiasis : current and new antifungal drugs

2019

Background Candidiasis is one of the most common opportunistic oral infections that presents different acute and chronic clinical presentations with diverse diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The present study carries out a bibliographic review on the therapeutic tools available against oral candidiasis and their usefulness in each clinical situation. Material and Methods Recent studies on treatment of oral candidiasis were retrieved from PubMed and Cochrane Library. Results Nystatin and miconazole are the most commonly used topical antifungal drugs. Both antifungal drugs are very effective but need a long time of use to eradicate the infection. The pharmacological presentations of mico…

Red propolis hydroalcoholic extract inhibits the formation of Candida albicans biofilms on denture surface

2020

Background To evaluate the antifungal activity of the red propolis hydroalcoholic extract (RPHE) against Candida albicans biofilms. Material and Methods The minimum inhibitory and fungicidal concentrations (MIC and MFC) of the RPHE were determined by the microdilution technique. C. albicans biofilms were formed on the surface of resin specimens preconditioned with artificial saliva (1h). The specimens (N=48) were equally divided according to the four solutions used for anti-biofilm evaluation (n=12 per group). After overnight incubation, biofilms were daily exposed (2x/day for 15 min) along 3 days with 3% RPHE, 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), 50,000 IU/mL nystatin (NYS) or saline (0.9% NaCl). Bi…

Chronic hyperplastic candidosis: a pilot study of the efficacy of 0.18% isotretinoin.

2009

Management of oral candidiasis depends on an accurate diagnosis, identification and elimination of predisposing factors, and, often, use of antifungal agents. Chronic hyperplastic candidosis (CHC) is considered a premalignant lesion of the oral mucosa, occurring as speckled or homogeneous white lesions. If the lesions are untreated, a minor proportion may become dysplastic and progress to carcinoma. The traditional treatment of this lesion is based on the use of antifungal agents. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of 0.18% isotretinoin for treatment of nystatin-resistant candidiasis. Isotretinoin was administered topically twice a day for one month to six patients affected b…

The Effects of Oregano Oil on Fungal Infections Associated with Metabolic Syndrome

2020

International audience; This study aims to compare the evolution of mycosis associated with metabolic syndrome under allopathic treatment compared to phytotherapy using oregano essential oil. The study was conducted over a period of 6 months, on a total of 72 patients diagnosed with fungal infections associated with metabolic syndrome. The patients were divided into 3 groups, depending on the administered treatment: group 1: 24 patients who received allopathic treatment; group 2: 24 patients who received oregano oil treatment; group 3: control, which did not undergo any antifungal treatment. All three groups were subjected to specific diet therapy for mycosis. The patients were initially ev…

Analysis of the infectious entry pathway of human papillomavirus type 33 pseudovirions.

2002

AbstractHuman papillomavirus type 33 (HPV-33) pseudovirus infection is a slow process dependent on the initial interaction with cell-surface heparan sulfate (T. Giroglou, L. Florin, F. Schafer, R. E. Streeck, and M. Sapp, 2001a, J. Virol. 75, 1565–1570). We have now further dissected the initial steps of pseudovirus uptake using removal of cell-surface proteoglycans and selective inhibition of entry pathways. Treatment of cells with heparinase I, but not with phosphoinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC), prevented binding of papillomavirus-like particles and infection with HPV-33 pseudovirions, indicating that GPI-linked proteoglycans (glypicans) are not required for productive infectio…

Redistribution of CD95, DR4 and DR5 in rafts accounts for the synergistic toxicity of resveratrol and death receptor ligands in colon carcinoma cells.

2004

The natural phytoalexin resveratrol (3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbene) exhibits both chemopreventive and antitumor activities through a variety of mechanisms. We have shown previously that resveratrol-induced apoptosis of a human colon cancer cell line involved the redistribution of CD95 (Fas/Apo-1) into lipid rafts. Here, we show that, in colon cancer cells that resist to resveratrol-induced apoptosis, the polyphenol also induces a redistribution of death receptors into lipid rafts. This effect sensitizes these tumor cells to death receptor-mediated apoptosis. In resveratrol-treated cells, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), anti-CD95 antibodies and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) activa…

Cholesterol Dependence of Collagen and Echovirus 1 Trafficking along the Novel α2β1 Integrin Internalization Pathway

2013

We have previously shown that soluble collagen and a human pathogen, echovirus 1 (EV1) cluster α2β1 integrin on the plasma membrane and cause their internalization into cytoplasmic endosomes. Here we show that cholesterol plays a major role not only in the uptake of α2β1 integrin and its ligands but also in the formation of α2 integrin-specific multivesicular bodies (α2-MVBs) and virus infection. EV1 infection and α2β1 integrin internalization were totally halted by low amounts of the cholesterol-aggregating drugs filipin or nystatin. Inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and accumulation of lanosterol after ketoconazole treatment inhibited uptake of collagen, virus and clustered integrin, an…

Current treatment of oral candidiasis: a literature review

2014

Candidiasis or oral candidosis is one of the most common human opportunistic fungal infections of the oral cavity. This pathology has a wide variety of treatment which has been studied until these days. The present study offers a literature review on the treatment of oral candidiasis, with the purpose of establish which treatment is the most suitable in each case. Searching the 24 latest articles about treatment of candidiasis it concluded that the incidence depends on the type of the candidiasis and the virulence of the infection. Although nystatin and amphotericin b were the most drugs used locally, fluconazole oral suspension is proving to be a very effective drug in the treatment of ora…

Topical treatment of oral lichen planus with anthocyanins

2014

Background: Oxidative stress is involved in oral lichen planus (OLP) pathogenesis; meanwhile anthocyanins are natural antioxidants present in grapes skin. Objectives: The aim of this research was to verify the utility of anthocyanins, extracted from grapes skin, for the local treatment of oral lichen planus and to compare it with clobetasol propionate- neomycin -nystatin cream (CP-NN). Study Design: Prospective, non-randomized study, with control group. Fifty-two patients with OLP were includ - ed. We divided patients into two categories: erosive oral lichen planus (EOLP) and non erosive oral lichen planus (NEOLP). 38 had EOLP (17 cases and 21 controls) and 14 presented NEOLP types (9 cases…
