Spatial distribution of X-ray emitting ejecta in Tychos SNR: indications of shocked Titanium

2015

Young supernova remnants show a characteristic ejecta-dominated X-ray emission that allows us to probe the products of the explosive nucleosynthesis processes and to ascertain important information about the physics of the supernova explosions. Hard X-ray observations have recently revealed the radioactive decay lines of 44Ti at ~67.9 keV and ~78.4 keV in the Tycho's SNR. We here analyze the set of XMM-Newton archive observations of the Tycho's SNR. We produce equivalent width maps of the Fe K and Ca XIX emission lines and find indications for a stratification of the abundances of these elements and significant anisotropies. We then perform a spatially resolved spectral analysis by identify…

Annual runoff assessment in arid and semiarid Mediterranean watersheds under the Budyko's framework

2017

The solution of many practical water problems is strictly connected to the availability of reliable and widespread information about runoff. The estimation of mean annual runoff and its interannual variability for any basin over a wide region, even if ungauged, would be fundamental for both water resources assessment and planning and for water quality analysis. Starting from these premises, the main aim of this work is to show a new approach, based on the Budyko's framework, for mapping the mean annual surface runoff and deriving the probability distribution of the annual runoff in arid and semiarid watersheds. As a case study, the entire island of Sicily, Italy, is here proposed. First, ti…

Communication analysis of the nomination proposals for inclusion in Unesco's World Heritage list : a comparative reading of “Ancient Georgian traditi…

2021

We live in a globalized world in which the attractiveness of territories, cultural policy and creativity are important levers for economic and sustainable development. Even a small territory or medium-sized cities can build their image by attracting tourists to increase economic benefits. Among other instruments, the Unesco's list has become increasingly popular. What are the consequences of classifying cities, know-how, traditions such as the world heritage of humanity? What are the differences in the ranking of items from different countries? The term heritage indicates all the objects, historical monuments, landscapes, or traditions of a country. There is the classification of these elem…

The Friedreich's Ataxia protein frataxin modulates DNA base excision repair in prokaryotes and mammals

2010

DNA-repair mechanisms enable cells to maintain their genetic information by protecting it from mutations that may cause malignant growth. Recent evidence suggests that specific DNA-repair enzymes contain ISCs (iron–sulfur clusters). The nuclearencoded protein frataxin is essential for the mitochondrial biosynthesis of ISCs. Frataxin deficiency causes a neurodegenerative disorder named Friedreich's ataxia in humans. Various types of cancer occurring at young age are associated with this disease, and hence with frataxin deficiency. Mice carrying a hepatocyte-specific disruption of the frataxin gene develop multiple liver tumours for unresolved reasons. In the present study, we show that frata…

An Interview with the Brother, Micheál Ó Nualláin

2015

This interview with Micheál Ó Nualláin, Brian O’Nolan’s brother and the only surviving member of his generation of the family, was conducted on 10 June 2014 in Monkstown, County Dublin. Its purpose was to obtain information about Brian O’Nolan’s private library at the John J. Burns Library, Boston College; the archive being the focal point of this issue of The Parish Review. It was Micheál who sold the last of his brother’s effects to Boston College in May 1997 and therefore he is in a position to answer questions about the purchase of the library, its contents and their provenance, and the reading practices of Brian and Evelyn O’Nolan. To read the article, click Download or View PDF.

Elevated blood Hsp60, its structural similarities and cross-reactivity with thyroid molecules, and its presence on the plasma membrane of oncocytes p…

2014

The role Hsp60 might play in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases is under investigation, but little information exists pertaining to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). With the aim to fill this gap, in the present work, we directed our attention to Hsp60 participation in HT pathogenesis. We found Hsp60 levels increased in the blood of HT patients compared to controls. The chaperonin was immunolocalized in thyroid tissue specimens from patients with HT, both in thyrocytes and oncocytes (Hurthle cells) with higher levels compared to controls (goiter). In oncocytes, we found Hsp60 not only in the cytoplasm but also on the plasma membrane, as shown by double immunofluorescence performed on …

Primary Microcephaly with Novel Variant of MCPH1 Gene in Twins: Both Manifesting in Childhood at the Same Time with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

2020

AbstractThis study is a clinical report on twin females affected by primary microcephaly who displayed at molecular analysis of heterozygous novel MCPH1 variant. The twins at the age of 10 years developed, in coincidental time, a diagnosis of autoimmune juvenile thyroiditis. The main clinical features presented by the twins consisted of primary microcephaly with occipitofrontal circumference measuring −2 or −3 standard deviation, facial dysmorphism, typical nonsyndromic microcephaly, and mild intellectual disability. Molecular analysis of the major genes involved in primary microcephaly was performed and the following result was found in the twins: MCPH1; chr8.6357416; c.2180 C > T (rs 1…

Reprint of: Approximate Taylor methods for ODEs

2018

Abstract A new method for the numerical solution of ODEs is presented. This approach is based on an approximate formulation of the Taylor methods that has a much easier implementation than the original Taylor methods, since only the functions in the ODEs, and not their derivatives, are needed, just as in classical Runge–Kutta schemes. Compared to Runge–Kutta methods, the number of function evaluations to achieve a given order is higher, however with the present procedure it is much easier to produce arbitrary high-order schemes, which may be important in some applications. In many cases the new approach leads to an asymptotically lower computational cost when compared to the Taylor expansio…

Lymphomas and thyroid: Bridging the gap

2018

The thyroid gland is often involved in the development of neoplastic diseases, including lymphoproliferative disorders. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the multiple interactions between lymphoma and thyroid. Through an extensive research among the literature, the relationship between lymphomas and thyroid can be established at various levels, and the possible interconnections are here summarized in 5 points: (1) the greater risk of lymphoma development in some thyroid diseases; (2) the primary thyroid lymphoma, with focus on issues related to the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment; (3) the incidence of thyroid involvement in primitive nodal lymp…
