Metal-support and preparation influence on the structural and electronic properties of gold catalysts

2006

Abstract Nanostructured gold catalysts supported on CeO2 and SiO2 were prepared by the deposition–precipitation (DP) and the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) techniques. The structural and electronic properties of the catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gold was found as small metal nanoparticles (cluster size ∼2 nm) in the SMAD-prepared samples and in ionic state in the DP catalysts. The catalytic activity of the samples was tested in the reaction of low temperature CO oxidation. Gold nanosized particles in a pure metallic state exhibited a worse catalytic performance, both on ceria and…

Bacterial sensor kinases using Fe–S cluster binding PAS or GAF domains for O2sensing

2012

[4Fe-4S](2+) clusters are used by very diverse types of bacterial sensors for response to oxygen, including DNA-binding proteins of the CRP/FNR family and sensor kinases like NreB. In NreB the cluster is bound by an input domain of the PAS type. The [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster of NreB responds to O(2) by degradation to a [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster which is labile and decomposes. NreB constitutes together with AirS the NreB/AirS family of bacterial sensor kinases that contain PAS or GAF domains for binding of [4Fe-4S](2+) or [2Fe-2S](2+) clusters and oxygen sensing. The NreB/AirS family is related to the FixL sensor kinases that use hemeB binding PAS domains for oxygen sensing.

Unusually large magmatic CO2gas emissions prior to a basaltic paroxysm

2010

[1] The low-intensity activity of basaltic volcanoes is occasionally interrupted by short-lived but energetic explosions which, whilst frequently observed, are amongst the most enigmatic volcanic events in Nature. The combination of poorly understood and deep, challenging to measure, source processes make such events currently impossible to forecast. Here we report increases in quiescent degassing CO2 emissions (>10,000 t/day) prior to a powerful explosive event on Stromboli volcano on 15 March 2007. We interpret such large CO2 flux as being sourced by passive gas leakage from a deeply (>4 km) stored magma, whose depressurization, possibly caused by the onset of an effusive eruption on 28 F…

First observational evidence for the CO2-driven origin of Stromboli's major explosions

2011

Abstract. We report on the first detection of CO2 flux precursors of the till now unforecastable "major" explosions that intermittently occur at Stromboli volcano (Italy). An automated survey of the crater plume emissions in the period 2006–2010, during which 12 such explosions happened, demonstrated that these events are systematically preceded by a brief phase of increasing CO2/SO2 weight ratio (up to >40) and CO2 flux (>1300 t d−1) with respect to the time-averaged values of 3.7 and ~500 t d−1 typical for standard Stromboli's activity. These signals are best explained by the accumulation of CO2-rich gas at a discontinuity of the plumbing system (decreasing CO2 emission at the surfa…

Biomolecules and nanostructured systems : characterization by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)

2014

This work addressed the study of several kinds of nanostructured systems, biomolecules and inorganic thin films, mainly by Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The aim was to investigate the structure and the chemical bonds. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was also used to complete the structural characterization of the different samples.Firstly, the study was conducted on molecules of biological interest. The aim was to study the interaction between silver nanoparticles and proteins. With this aim, silver nanoparticles bioconjugated with different proteins (hemoglobin, cytochrome C, BSA and lysozim) were synthesized. SERS results allowed concluding that proteins are chemisorb…

Vers le contrôle de l'alignement et de l'orientation : théorie et expérience

2010

This thesis is about the control and characterisation of the alignment and orientation of molecules by ultra short laser pulses on a theoretical and experimental approach. Alignment corresponds to a symmetric angular distribution of the molecular axis peaked along the laser field axis, whereas orientation provides an asymmetric distribution favouring one spatial direction. Orientation by sudden two-colour (2+1) pulses is studied extensively for the non resonant case and conditions required for achieving significant orientation are explored. A second two-colour scheme, where the second harmonic is in quasi resonance with a vibrational level of the molecule, is also presented and discussed. T…

Lipid metabolism during exercise

1980

Seven physically fit (well-trained, maximal oxygen uptake 69.6 +/- 4.4 ml x kg-1 min-1) and eight less fit (moderately trained, maximal oxygen uptake 56.1 +/- 5.7 ml x kg-1 x min-1) healthy male subjects were exercised for 4 h by bicycle ergometry against a pedalling resistance calculated to cause oxygen consumption corresponding to approximately 30% of each individual's maximal oxygen uptake value. Respiratory exchange ratio was estimated at 1 h and blood glucose and lactate concentrations and muscle glycogen content at 2 h intervals. Muscle glycogen content decreased markedly during the first 2 h of exercise in the well-trained group but was similar after 4 h exercise in both groups. No m…
