Total (fumarolic + diffuse soil) CO2 output from Furnas volcano

Furnas volcano, in São Miguel island (Azores), being the surface expression of rising hydrothermal steam, is the site of intense carbon dioxide (CO2) release by diffuse degassing and fumaroles. While the diffusive CO2 output has long (since the early 1990s) been characterized by soil CO2 surveys, no information is presently available on the fumarolic CO2 output. Here, we performed (in August 2014) a study in which soil CO2 degassing survey was combined for the first time with the measurement of the fumarolic CO2 flux. Dissolved CO2 in natural waters: development of an automated monitoring system and first application to Stromboli volcano (Italy)

The study of geochemical parameters applied to natural systems has provided improved knowledge of geochemical mechanisms of gas/rock dissolution in natural waters that are linked to gas-water and/or water-rock interaction processes. Here we present the results of our studies focused on the development of an automated monitoring system for measuring the amount of dissolved CO2 in natural waters. The system is based on the principle of a dynamic equilibrium between water and the air as the host gas. Hyperthermia has been shown to have a lethal effect in tumor cell cultures, particularly at temperatures above 42°C.1 Moreover, it has been demonstrated that hyperthermia retards the growth rate of certain types of malignant tumors and can be effective in completely eradicating some tumors without any major damage to normal tissue.2,3,4 The differential response of solid tumors in vivo to heat treatment in comparison to normal tissue probably results from several factors. Determination of concentrations in ternary and quaternary molecular gas mixtures using femtosecond Raman spectroscopy

They rely on a femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe technique based on Raman-induced polarization spectroscopy. Summary Human papillomaviruses (HPV) induce warts and cancers on skin and mucosa. The HPV16 capsid is composed of the proteins L1 and L2. After cell entry and virus disassembly, the L2 protein accompanies the viral DNA to promyelocytic leukaemia nuclear bodies (PML-NBs) within the host nuclei enabling viral transcription and replication. The Multi-GAS, a robust and low-cost instrument for real-time in-situ gas measurements, has previously been used mainly for compositional measurements of active volcanic plumes. Here we demonstrate novel use of a specially designed Multi-GAS instrument adapted to low temperature degassing areas. We performed compositional measurements in the Eastern Carpathians on dry and bubbling gas emissions using a sensor kit that allows measurement of CO2, CH4 and H2S (three major components of low-temperature hydrothermal/volcanic manifestations).
