Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet: A Potential Application in the Treatment of Hypercortisolism Comorbidities
2022
A very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) is characterized by low daily caloric intake (less than 800 kcal/day), low carbohydrate intake (<50 g/day) and normoproteic (1–1.5 g of protein/kg of ideal body weight) contents. It induces a significant weight loss and an improvement in lipid parameters, blood pressure, glycaemic indices and insulin sensitivity in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Cushing’s syndrome (CS) is characterized by an endogenous or exogenous excess of glucocorticoids and shows many comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and lipid disorders. The aim of this speculative review is to provide an overview on nutrit…

Sex-Specific Differences in the Control of Serum Concentrations of Glycine in Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome and Mendelian Randomization Analysis f…
2020
OBJECTIVES: Glycine is a novel circulating marker for metabolic diseases associated with lower type-2 diabetes and protection against obesity in some studies. Circulating glycine levels are genetically determined under the control of several loci. The locus most strongly associated is the carbamoyl-phosphate synthase I (CPS1). Interestingly, some sex-specific genome-wide association studies (GWAS) showed differences in the effect of the main single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this locus on glycine levels (significant sex * CPS1 interactions). However, the potential mechanisms explaining this sex-heterogeneity are unknown. Therefore, our aims were: 1) to analyze whether the sex * CPS1…
A Nutraceutical Containing Chlorogenic Acid and Luteolin Improves Cardiometabolic Parameters in Subjects with Pre-Obesity: A 6-Month Randomized, Doub…
2023
Pre-obesity is a condition that predisposes to the risk of developing obesity, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and diabetes. Our previous study demonstrated that a Cynara cardunculus (L.) based nutraceutical named Altilix® (Bionap, Italy), containing chlorogenic acid and luteolin extracts, was able to improve several hepatic and cardio-metabolic parameters. Given this background, we conducted a post-hoc analysis of the Altilix® study in order to analyze the supplement’s effects in the subgroup of pre-obesity subjects on anthropometry (weight and waist circumference), glucose metabolism (HbA1C, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β), lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-chole…
Les inhibiteurs du goût sucré : perspectives thérapeutiques
2015
This review summarizes and discusses the current knowledge concerning the physiological role of the sweet taste receptor (T1R2/T1R3) and the potential therapeutic perspectives concerning its inhibition. The functional expression of the sweet taste receptor has also been described in many extra-oral tissues where it has been proposed that the receptor participated in the regulation of metabolic processes. The receptor has been highlighted in various organs such as the intestine, pancreas, bladder, brain, and more recently in the bone and adipose tissue. In the intestine, T1R2/T1R3 receptor has been shown to be involved in the detection of luminal glucose, cytokine release of certain hormones…
ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF VISCERAL- AND SUBCUTANEOUS ADIPOSE-DERIVED MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS: PUTATIVE ROLE IN OBESITY AND METABOLIC SYNDROME

PARA-PERIRENAL DISTRIBUTION OF BODY FAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH REDUCED GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE REGARDLESS OF OTHER INDICES OF ADIPOSITY IN HYPERTENSIV…
2018
INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a well-known risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease. Recently, para-perirenal ultrasonographic fat thickness (PUFT) has shown to correlate with both total and visceral fat better than body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and other indices of obesity. Moreover, a local paracrine and mechanical action of the PUFT on kidney has been described in recent studies. AIM: To assess the relationship between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and PUFT in comparison to other anthropometric and ultrasonographic indices of adiposity. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-six hypertensive patients were enrolled. PUFT, cutis-rectis thickness and re…

Compliance to ventilatory treatment in a cohort of patients on home CPAP or NIV: analysis by diagnosis, treatment type, and comorbidities
2019
Background: Patients on home continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) show large variability in compliance to treatment. Aim: To identify predictors of poor compliance, we evaluated compliance to treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), and OSA-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome. Methods: We analyzed clinical and compliance data provided by a single home care provider, in 602 patients (n=442 OSA, males (M) 308; 38 OHS M=15, and 122 overlap M=111) on home CPAP/NIV in the province of Agrigento, Italy, after one year of treatment. The following variables were considered: age, …
Incident cardiovascular events in severely obese patients treated with continous positive airway pressure (CPAP)/non invasive ventilation (NIV): A 5.…
2015
it is still debated whether CPAP or non-invasive ventilation (NIV) reduces cardiovascular (CV) risk in morbidly obese patients. Obese subjects affected by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) (n=210) were recruited between 2007-2010 in the Sleep Center, Univ. of Grenoble; 152 of them were treated with CPAP or NIV, and regularly followed by a home-care provider (Agir a dom). Patients underwent phone interviews to assess incident CV events during 5.6 years (range 4.0-6.5 yrs) of follow-up. One hundred seventeen patients (63 men) responded to questionnaire, 3 OSA patients died, and 32 declined/were lost to follow-up (response rate 77%). All patients at baseli…
