'Pulmonary thrombosis in situ': risk factors, clinic characteristics and long-term evolution.

2020

: Pulmonary embolism typically occurs from deep venous thrombosis (DVT). However, not always a DVT can be identified, and 'in situ' generation of pulmonary embolism has been considered, referred to in the literature as 'De novo pulmonary embolism' (DNPE). The objective of the study is to assess risk factors, comorbidities, clinic characteristics and long-term evolution of patients with pulmonary embolism in the absence of an identified source. Retrospective study of 280 patients with pulmonary embolism, 190 pulmonary embolisms with DVT group and 90 (32%) pulmonary embolism without DVT (DNPE group), admitted to an Internal Medicine Department of a tertiary hospital from January 2012 to Decem…

Identification of somatostatin receptor type 5 gene polymorphisms associated with acromegaly.

2011

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to characterize the genetic variance of somatostatin receptor 5 (SSTR5) and investigate the possible correlation of such variants with acromegaly risk and different disease characteristics.Design and methodsThe SSTR5 gene coding region and 2000 bp upstream region was sequenced in 48 patients with acromegaly and 96 control subjects. Further, three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed in the same group of acromegaly patients and in an additional group of 475 age- and sex-matched controls.ResultsIn total, 19 SNPs were identified in the SSTR5 gene locus by direct sequencing. Three SNPs (rs34037914, rs169068, and rs642249) were significantly ass…

Analgesic use among community-dwelling people aged 75 years and older : a population-based interview study

2010

Abstract Background: Pain is often underrecognized and undertreated among older people. However, older people may be particularly susceptible to adverse drug reactions linked to prescription and nonprescription analgesics. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of analgesic use among a random sample of community-dwelling people aged ≥75 years, and to investigate factors associated with daily and as-needed analgesic use. Methods: A random sample of people aged ≥75 years was drawn from the population register in Kuopio, Finland, in November 2003. Data on prescription and nonprescription analgesic use were elicited during nurse interviews conducted once for each parti…

Self-Reported Hearing Status Is Associated with Lower Limb Physical Performance, Perceived Mobility, and Activities of Daily Living in Older Communit…

2015

BACKGROUND: Poor hearing is common in older adults and it may have negative consequences which extend beyond communication. OBJECTIVES: To explore the associations of self-reported hearing problems with physical performance and self-reported difficulties in mobility and activities of daily living (ADL) in community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional cohort study SETTING: Community PARTICIPANTS: 848 men and women aged 75-90 years MEASUREMENTS: Structured face-to-face interviews to assess perceived hearing problems in the presence of noise, mobility difficulties (moving indoors, stair-climbing, 0.5 km walk and 2 km walk) and difficulties in ADLs and instrumental ADLs. The Short Ph…

Prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with acute coronary syndrome: short and medium term follow-up.

2013

AIMS: Different studies have shown a correlation between aldosterone, atherosclerosis and ischemia in the past decade. Evidence exists for the relationship between high levels of aldosterone and augmented risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, cardiac failure, coronary artery disease and stroke. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with myocardial infarction. METHODS: The study population included 96 consecutive patients admitted to our department for ST-elevated and non-ST-elevated myocardial infarction from June 2009 to March 2012. Plasma aldosterone levels were measured at admission to hospital in all patients. A 2-ye…

Epidemiology and prognosis of synchronous colorectal cancers

2008

Abstract Background The aim of this population-based study was to report on the incidence, treatment and prognosis of synchronous colorectal carcinomas. Methods Data were obtained from the population-based cancer registry of Burgundy. Results Between 1976 and 2004, 15 562 colorectal cancers were diagnosed. Some 3·8 per cent of patients had synchronous colorectal cancers. The risk of having synchronous cancers was higher in men (odds ratio (OR) 1·41 (95 per cent confidence interval (c.i.) 1·19 to 1·68)), when associated adenomas were present (OR 2·02 (95 per cent c.i. 1·69 to 2·41)), when there were adenomatous remnants on pathological examination (OR 2·10 (95 per cent c.i. 1·73 to 2·55)) an…

A potential real-time procedure to evaluate correlation of recordings among single trials (CoRaST) for mismatch negativity (MMN) with Fourier transfo…

2011

Abstract Objective To design a fast algorithm that evaluates the degree of correlation of recordings among single trials (CoRaST) for mismatch negativity (MMN) activity. Methods The participants were 114 children, aged 8–16 years. MMNs were elicited by two deviants in duration that occurred in an uninterrupted sound within a passive oddball paradigm, and each trial lasted 650 ms with 130 samples. CoRaST was derived from the frequency-domain MMN model through Fourier transformation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the wavelet transformation-based inter-trial coherence (ITC) was taken as a reference. Results Performances of the proposed CoRaST and ITC were similar in eva…

Enhanced development of auditory change detection in musically trained school-aged children: a longitudinal event-related potential study

2013

Adult musicians show superior auditory discrimination skills when compared to non-musicians. The enhanced auditory skills of musicians are reflected in the augmented amplitudes of their auditory event-related potential (ERP) responses. In the current study, we investigated longitudinally the development of auditory discrimination skills in musically trained and nontrained individuals. To this end, we recorded the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a responses from children who play a musical instrument and age-matched children with no musical training at ages 7, 9, 11, and 13. Basic auditory processing was investigated by recording ERPs in the Multi-Feature Paradigm that included frequency, du…

Sexual behavior and suicide attempts among adolescents aged 12–15 years from 38 countries: A global perspective

2020

BACKGROUND: The aim was to investigate the relationship between sexual behaviors and suicide attempts by using data from 38 countries from four World Health Organization regions. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 116,820 adolescents aged 12-15 years participating in the Global School-based Student Health Survey 2009-2016 were analyzed. Data on sexual behaviors were collected: (i) ever having had intercourse; among those who reported having had intercourse, (ii) multiple (≥2) lifetime sexual partners and (iii) condom use in last sexual intercourse and past 12-month suicide attempts were self-reported. Associations were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: The prevalenc…

Optimal Digital Filtering versus Difference Waves on the Mismatch Negativity in an Uninterrupted Sound Paradigm

2007

Conventionally, mismatch negativity (MMN) is analyzed through the calculation of the difference waves. This helps to eliminate some exogenous event-related potential (ERP) components. However, this reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This study aims to test whether or not the optimal digital filtering performs better than the difference waves procedure in quantitative ERP analyses in an uninterrupted sound paradigm. The participants were 102 children aged 8-16 years. The MMN was elicited in a passive oddball paradigm presenting an uninterrupted sound consisting of two alternating tones (600 and 800 Hz) of the same duration (100 msec) with infrequent shortenings of one of the 600 Hz ton…
