Cardiovascular risk factors, angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism, and left ventricular mass in systemic hypertension.

1999

We investigated the influence of major cardiovascular risk factors (smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus) on the association between angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism and echocardiographic left ventricular mass in 225 patients with sustained hypertension, assessed by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. When the study population was analyzed as a whole, the 3 ACE genotypes did not differ in left ventricular mass (II, 47 g/m2.7; ID, 49 g/m2.7; DD, 51 g/m2.7; p = NS). No difference was found in subjects (n = 135) in whom at least 1 major cardiovascular risk factor was present (II, 51 g/m2.7; ID, 51 g/m2.7; DD: 52 g/m2.7; p = NS). In …

Obesity and iron deficiency anemia as risk factors for asymptomatic bacteriuria.

2013

Background: Few studies examined the risk factors of asymptomatic bacteriuria, showing contradictory results. Our study aimed to examine the association between different clinical and laboratory parameters and asymptomatic bacteriuria in internal medicine patients. Materials and methods: 330 consecutive hospitalized subjects, asymptomatic for urinary tract infections (UTIs), underwent to microscopic examination of urine specimens. 100 subjects were positive for microscopic bacteriuria and were recruited into the study. At the quantitative urine culture 31 subjects of study population were positive while 69 subjects were negative for bacteriuria. Results: The analysis of clinical characteris…

Low Back Pain in Young Basketball and Floorball Players

2015

Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain (LBP) in young female and male basketball and floorball players. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Nine basketball teams and 9 floorball teams from Tampere city district, Finland. Participants Four hundred one young female and male players (mean age: 15.8 ± 1.9 years). Assessment of risk factors Age, gender, sport, and family history of musculoskeletal disorders were assessed as risk factors for LBP. Adjustment was made on team level to avoid random effects associated with a team. Main outcome measures Information of players' background factors and LBP episodes was collected by a structure…

A Sequential Algorithm Combining ADAPT and Liver Stiffness Can Stage Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease in Hospital-Based and Primary Care Pati…

2020

INTRODUCTION Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease is common, with fibrosis the major determinant of adverse outcomes. Population-based screening tools with high diagnostic accuracy for the staging of fibrosis are lacking. METHODS Three independent cohorts, 2 with both liver biopsy and liver stiffness measurements (LSMs, n = 254 and 65) and a population sample (n = 713), were studied. The performance of a recently developed noninvasive algorithm (ADAPT [age, diabetes, PRO-C3 and platelets panel]) as well as aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index, fibrosis-4, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score, and LSM was used to stage patients for significant (≥F2) and advanced …

Hyperuricemia protects against low bone mineral density, osteoporosis and fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Background: Serum uric acid (SUA) accounts for about 50% of extracellular antioxidant activity, suggesting that hyperuricemia may have a protective role in diseases characterized by high levels of oxidative stress, such as osteoporosis. We aimed to meta-analyse data regarding bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis and fractures in people with higher SUA vs. lower SUA concentrations. Materials and methods: Two investigators conducted a literature search using PubMed and Scopus, without language restrictions. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used for BMD; risk ratios (RRs) and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for cross-sectional data. Most possible adju…

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

1997

Summary Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Many treatments have been proposed but considerable uncertainty still remains about their effectiveness. In this review we evaluated the quality, clinical coherence, consistency and results of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) of non-surgical treatments for HCC. Methods Thirty-seven RCTs examining the effect of different treatments were retrieved using MEDLINE (November 1978 to December 1995) and a review of reference lists. Selected aspects of the quality of design, conduct and reporting were examined. The odds ratio for the probability of surviving up to one year was calculated according to the …

Mediterranean Diet Reduces the Adverse Effect of the TCF7L2-rs7903146 Polymorphism on Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Stroke Incidence

2013

OBJECTIVE Transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) polymorphisms are strongly associated with type 2 diabetes, but controversially with plasma lipids and cardiovascular disease. Interactions of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on these associations are unknown. We investigated whether the TCF7L2-rs7903146 (C>T) polymorphism associations with type 2 diabetes, glucose, lipids, and cardiovascular disease incidence were modulated by MedDiet. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A randomized trial (two MedDiet intervention groups and a control group) with 7,018 participants in the PREvención con DIetaMEDiterránea study was undertaken and major cardiovascular events assessed. Data were analyzed at b…

Early Improvement and Serum Concentrations of Citalopram to Predict Antidepressant Drug Response of Patients with Major Depression

2013

Post hoc analyses of clinical trials have shown that early improvement around day 14 is highly predictive for later response. More- over, evidence has been given that suffi ciently high concentrations of antidepressant drugs in blood are required to attain response. In this study, we determined cut-off levels for citalo- pram serum concentrations and clinical improve- ment during the early phase of treatment to predict later response and the predictive power of these measures either alone or in combination. Methods: Inpatients with depressive disorder according to ICD-10 who received citalopram were included. Psychopathology was assessed by the 17-item Hamilton Depression (HAMD-17) rating s…

Postoperative complications and 90-day mortality in radical cystectomy in high-risk patients: A monocentric retrospective observational study.

2018

Aim: Assessing the incidence of immediate postoperative complications and 90-day mortality in high-risk patients who have undergone radical cystectomy; evaluating the correlation between preoperative conditions and surgery outcomes. Materials and methods: This is a monocentric retrospective observational study in which data of 65 patients have been analyzed. High-risk criteria: (a) Age ≥75 years, (b) obesity, (c) age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index ≥8, (d) anemic status, and (e) pT ≥3. More than 50% of patients had two or more “high-risk” indicators. Postoperative complications were assessed through Clavien–Dindo classification. Results: Average age of patients was 70.4 years, average a…

Choline Metabolism and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure in the PREDIMED Study

2020

Abstract Background Few studies have examined the associations of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and its precursors (choline, betaine, dimethylglycine, and L-carnitine) with the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF). This study sought to investigate these associations. Methods Prospective associations of these metabolites with incident AF and HF were examined among participants at high cardiovascular risk in the PREDIMED study (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) after follow-up for about 10 years. Two nested case-control studies were conducted, including 509 AF incident cases matched to 618 controls and 326 HF incident cases matched to 426 controls. Plasma levels of TMAO an…
