Branch Points of Algebraic Functions and the Beginnings of Modern Knot Theory

Many of the key ideas which formed modern topology grew out of “normal research” in one of the mainstream fields of 19th-century mathematical thinking, the theory of complex algebraic functions. These ideas were eventually divorced from their original context. The present study discusses an example illustrating this process. During the years 1895-1905, the Austrian mathematician, Wilhelm Wirtinger, tried to generalize Felix Klein's view of algebraic functions to the case of several variables. Let Y be a smooth, connected, projective complex curve of genus ≥0. R. Biggers and M. Fried [J. Reine Angew. Math. 335, 87–121 (1982; Zbl 0484.14002), Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, No. 1, 59–70 (1986; Zbl 0601.14022)] proved the irreducibility of the Hurwitz spaces which parametrize coverings of ℙ 1 whose monodromy group is a Weyl of type W(D d ). Here we prove the irreducibility of Hurwitz spaces that parametrize coverings of Y with monodromy group a Weyl group of type W(B d ).

In this paper we study Hurwitz spaces parameterizing coverings with special points and with monodromy group a Weyl group of type Bd. We prove that such spaces are irreducible if k > 3d ? 3. Here, k denotes the number of local monodromies that are reflections relative to long roots.

The study presents results of habitat creation and riparian vegetation recovery in artificial oxbow lakes in urbanized area within the large river valley. The investigation of open water, rush and wet meadows flora and vegetation in three ponds located in the city centre of Opole was conducted in years 2001–2013. Oxbow lakes were constructed as a compensation measure and no vegetation was transplanted into the ponds on purpose. 13-years observation showed that (1) the red-listed species are able to spontaneous reoccurrence after habitat restoration, but they can thrive only in first years of oxbow lakes recolonisation process, (2) there are some restoration constraints, especially in relati…

Abstract AuIII complexes with N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have shown remarkable potential as anticancer agents, yet their fate in vivo has not been thoroughly examined and understood. Reported herein is the synthesis of new AuIII‐NHC complexes by direct oxidation with radioactive [124I]I2 as a valuable strategy to monitor the in vivo biodistribution of this class of compounds using positron emission tomography (PET). We¿ve made an integrative review using articles collected from PubMed, considering as an inclusive criteria they having defined as an object of study social or motivational aspects of the mothers that have donated milk; we found and analyzed eight articles. Organophosphate (OP) pesticides are widely used as antiparasitic chemicals in finfish aquaculture. However, current antidotes cannot be applied to treat intoxicated fish. We showed in previous studies the importance of glutathione (GSH) metabolism in pesticide resistance of the European eel Anguilla anguilla L.
