Steviol glycosides and bioactive compounds of a beverage with exotic fruits and Stevia rebaudiana Bert. as affected by thermal treatment

2020

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of thermal processing on physicochemical properties, steviol glycosides, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity degradation of a beverage based on exotic fruit juices, orange juice, açaí, and oat and sweetened with Stevia rebaudiana water extracts at different concentrations. The experimental design comprised a response surface methodology according to a central composite face-centered design. The variable ranges were 60–99°C, 0.25–15 min, 0–2.5% Stevia percentage. This design was used to determine the optimal thermal processing-Stevia concentration in order to obtain the best retention of bioactive compounds and physicochemical pr…

European Option Pricing and Hedging with Both Fixed and Proportional Transaction Costs

2003

Abstract In this paper we provide a systematic treatment of the utility based option pricing and hedging approach in markets with both fixed and proportional transaction costs: we extend the framework developed by Davis et al. (SIAM J. Control Optim., 31 (1993) 470) and formulate the option pricing and hedging problem. We propose and implement a numerical procedure for computing option prices and corresponding optimal hedging strategies. We present a careful analysis of the optimal hedging strategy and elaborate on important differences between the exact hedging strategy and the asymptotic hedging strategy of Whalley and Wilmott (RISK 7 (1994) 82). We provide a simulation analysis in order …

American Option Pricing and Exercising with Transaction Costs

2005

In this paper we examine the problem of finding the reservation option prices and corresponding exercise policies of American options in a market with proportional transaction costs using the utility based approach proposed by Davis and Zariphopoulou (1995). We present a model where the option holder has a constant absolute risk aversion. We discuss the numerical algorithm and propose a new characterization of the option holder's value function. We suggest original discretization schemes for computing reservation prices and exercise policies of American options. The discretization schemes are implemented for the cases of American put and call options. We present the study of the optimal tra…

Evidence of stochastic resonance in the mating behavior of Nezara viridula (L.)

2008

We investigate the role of the noise in the mating behavior between individuals of Nezara viridula (L.), by analyzing the temporal and spectral features of the non-pulsed type female calling song emitted by single individuals. We have measured the threshold level for the signal detection, by performing experiments with the calling signal at different intensities and analyzing the insect response by directionality tests performed on a group of male individuals. By using a sub-threshold signal and an acoustic Gaussian noise source, we have investigated the insect response for different levels of noise, finding behavioral activation for suitable noise intensities. In particular, the percentage…

Finitary formal topologies and Stone’s representation theorem

2008

AbstractWe study the concept of finitary formal topology, a point-free version of a topological space with a basis of compact open subsets. The notion of finitary formal topology is defined from the perspective of the Basic Picture (introduced by the second author) and thus it is endowed with a binary positivity relation. As an application, we prove a constructive version of Stone’s representation theorem for distributive lattices. We work within the framework of a minimalist foundation (as proposed by Maria Emilia Maietti and the second author). Both inductive and co-inductive methods are used in most proofs.

A paradigm of extreme rainfall pluvial floods in complex urban areas: the flood event of 15 July 2020 in Palermo (Italy)

2021

Abstract. In the last few years, some regions of the Mediterranean area have witnessed a progressive increase in extreme events, such as urban and flash floods, as a response to the increasingly frequent and severe extreme rainfall events, which are often exacerbated by the ever-growing urbanization. In such a context, the urban drainage systems may not be sufficient to convey the rainwater, thus increasing the risk deriving from the occurrence of such events. This study focuses on a particularly intense urban flood that occurred in Palermo (Italy) on 15 July 2020; it represents a typical pluvial flood due to extreme rainfall on a complex urban area that many cities have experienced in rece…

Ketogenic diet does not affect strength performance in elite artistic gymnasts

2012

Abstract Background Despite the increasing use of very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets (VLCKD) in weight control and management of the metabolic syndrome there is a paucity of research about effects of VLCKD on sport performance. Ketogenic diets may be useful in sports that include weight class divisions and the aim of our study was to investigate the influence of VLCKD on explosive strength performance. Methods 8 athletes, elite artistic gymnasts (age 20.9 ± 5.5 yrs) were recruited. We analyzed body composition and various performance aspects (hanging straight leg raise, ground push up, parallel bar dips, pull up, squat jump, countermovement jump, 30 sec continuous jumps) before and after…

Territorial development models: A new strategic vision to analyze the relationship between the environment, public goods and geographical indications

2021

Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) are increasingly seen as a tool to support sustainable local development. This study focuses on how geographical indications can contribute to a territorial public system, and how this can be threatened by several market failures. Starting from the economic literature on public goods, this document highlights how geographical indications, and their legal protection, can guarantee a sustainable development model. This article aims to illustrate and develop new economic arguments that support a more comprehensive political approach to the contribution that Geographical indications make to sustainable development. The research is focused in Sicily on the…

ChIP-Seq from Limited Starting Material of K562 Cells and Drosophila Neuroblasts Using Tagmentation Assisted Fragmentation Approach

2019

Chromatin immunoprecipitation is extensively used to investigate the epigenetic profile and transcription factor binding sites in the genome. However, when the starting material is limited, the conventional ChIP-Seq approach cannot be implemented. This protocol describes a method that can be used to generate the chromatin profiles from as low as 100 human or 1,000 Drosophila cells. The method employs tagmentation to fragment the chromatin with concomitant addition of sequencing adaptors. The method generates datasets with high signal to noise ratio and can be subjected to standard tools for ChIP-Seq analysis.
