VAPOR-LIQUID EQUILIBRIUM CALCULATIONS USING THE TOPOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF MIXTURES.
1983
The Topological Treatment of mixtures is applied to several kinds of binary mixtures to obtain VLE diagrams. The excess Gibbs free energy, gE, is calculated as the product of a topological vector and an information vector. The pure compound topological description were obtained following the DARC system rules. A weighting function was introduced to obtain the topological description of a mixture. The information vector is calculated from experimental data. It is shown that for binary mixtures alcohol-alkane, the components of this vector varies linearly with the average number of carbon atoms of chemical compounds. This relationship allows prediction of the VLE diagram for any other system …
On the spectrum of semi-classical Witten-Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in large dimension
2005
We investigate the low-lying spectrum of Witten–Laplacians on forms of arbitrary degree in the semi-classical limit and uniformly in the space dimension. We show that under suitable assumptions implying that the phase function has a unique local minimum one obtains a number of clusters of discrete eigenvalues at the bottom of the spectrum. Moreover, we are able to count the number of eigenvalues in each cluster. We apply our results to certain sequences of Schrodinger operators having strictly convex potentials and show that some well-known results of semi-classical analysis hold also uniformly in the dimension.
New Invariant Domain Preserving Finite Volume Schemes for Compressible Flows
2021
We present new invariant domain preserving finite volume schemes for the compressible Euler and Navier–Stokes–Fourier systems. The schemes are entropy stable and preserve positivity of density and internal energy. More importantly, their convergence towards a strong solution of the limit system has been proved rigorously in [9, 11]. We will demonstrate their accuracy and robustness on a series of numerical experiments.
Thermodynamics: Classical Framework
2016
This chapter starts with a summary of the thermodynamic potentials and the relationships between them which are obtained from Legendre transformation. This is followed by an excursion to some important global properties of materials such as specific heat, expansion coefficients and others. The thermodynamic relations provide the basis for a discussion of continuous changes of state which are illustrated by the Joule-Thomson effect and the Van der Waals gas. These are models which are more realistic than the ideal gas. The discussion of Carnot cycles leads to and illustrates the second and third laws of thermodynamics. The chapter closes with a discussion of entropy as a concave function of …
Study of thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamic convection on solute redistribution during laser additive manufacturing
2020
Abstract Melt pools formed in laser additive manufacturing (AM) are subject to large thermal gradients, resulting in the formation of thermoelectric currents due to the Seebeck effect. When in the presence of an external magnetic field, a Lorentz force is formed which drives fluid flow in the melt pool. This Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamics (TEMHD) phenomenon, can have a significant impact on the melt pool morphology and can alter the microstructural evolution of the solidification process. By coupling steady-state mesoscopic melt pool calculations to a microscopic solidification model, predictions of the resulting microstructure for multiple deposited layers have been obtained. The resu…
Self-regulation mechanism of an ecosystem in a non-Gaussian fluctuation regime
1996
We study a dynamical model for an ecological network of many interacting species. We consider a Malthus-Verhulst type of self-regulation mechanism. In the framework of the mean field theory we study the nonlinear relaxation in three different cases: (a) towards the equilibrium state, (b) towards the absorbing barrier, (c) at the critical point. We obtain asymptotic behavior in all different cases for the time average of the process. The dynamical behavior of the system, in the limit of infinitely many interacting species, is investigated in the stability and instability conditions and theoretical results are compared with numerical simulations. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical So…

Hadronic light-by-light contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$ from lattice QCD with SU(3) flavor symmetry
2020
We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$ at the SU(3) flavor-symmetric point $m_\pi=m_K\simeq 420\,$MeV. The representation used is based on coordinate-space perturbation theory, with all QED elements of the relevant Feynman diagrams implemented in continuum, infinite Euclidean space. As a consequence, the effect of using finite lattices to evaluate the QCD four-point function of the electromagnetic current is exponentially suppressed. Thanks to the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, only two topologies of diagrams contribute, the fully connected and the leading disconnected. We show the equivalence in the continuum limit of two methods of computin…
The value of synthetic linear epitope analogues of La/SSB for the detection of autoantibodies to La/SSB; specificity, sensitivity and comparison of m…
1998
SUMMARY In a previous study it was shown that La/SSB contains four linear epitopes, p147–154, p291–302, p301–318 and p349–364. The aim of the present study was to investigate the value of the synthetic epitope analogues of the La/SSB autoantigen for the detection of antibodies to La/SSB, in comparison with recombinant La and fragments of this protein. A total of 122 sera with anti-La/SSB activity, from patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), were tested in various peptide-based assays. In addition, 62 sera from pSS or SLE patients with other autoantibody specificities and 95 sera from healthy individuals were used as controls. The autoantibody s…
Näennäinen kasvu ja välttelyn taktiikat määrittämässä opiskelijaryhmän omatoimista työskentelyä
2012
