Although achalasia presents with typical symptoms such as dysphagia, regurgitation, weight loss, and atypical chest pain, the time until first diagnosis often takes years and is frustrating for patients and nevertheless associated with high costs for the healthcare system. A total of 563 patients were interviewed with confirmed diagnosis of achalasia regarding their symptoms leading to diagnosis along with past clinical examinations and treatments. Hyposmia is a common symptom in allergic rhinitis. However, little is known about differences in the olfactory function of patients with seasonal or perennial allergy. A prospective controlled study was performed on 28 patients with allergic rhinitis to grass pollen and on 47 patients with allergic rhinitis to mites. Sixty-six healthy volunteers served as a control. Lateralized and Bilateral Olfactory Function in Patients With Chronic Sinusitis Compared With Healthy Control Subjects

Results of this study demonstrated that a new olfactory test, the "Sniffin' Sticks," can be used to distinguish hyposmic patients with chronic sinusitis (n = 63) from control subjects. Dirhinic testing yielded improved olfactory sensitivity compared with monorhinic testing. However, dirhinic results were not significantly different from results obtained for the best nostril.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: A theoretical and experimental study was performed to assess the possible effects of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) on retinal image quality and thresholds in the peripheral visual field. In modern motor vehicles with automatic power windows, a potential hazard exists for jam events of fingers between the window glass and seal entry. This study determined entrapment forces acting on adult fingers at the subjective maximum pain threshold during entrapment in such windows.
