The Teacher's Perspective in Older Education: The Experience of Teaching in a University for Older People in Spain
2010
The aim of this study was to explore university lecturers' descriptions of their teaching experience with older students. Twelve teachers of the Nau Gran (a university program for older people [UPOP] in Valencia, Spain) were interviewed. We analyzed their responses to questions about their experience of teaching older adults, the rewarding aspects of that experience and the teaching strategies they used. Teachers described their experience as extremely positive and rewarding, and often contrasted the active, interested, and grateful older students with the relatively passive regular younger students. The teachers also mentioned how they adapted their teaching to suit a more motivated and pa…
Moral Attitudes Toward Pharmacological Cognitive Enhancement (PCE): Differences and Similarities Among Germans With and Without PCE Experience
2018
Pharmacological cognitive enhancement (PCE), the use of illicit and/or prescription drugs to increase cognitive performance, has spurred controversial discussion in bioethics. In a semi-structured interview study with 60 German university students and employees, differences and similarities in moral attitudes toward PCE among 30 experienced participants (EPs) vs. 30 inexperienced participants (IPs) were investigated. Substances EPs used most often are methylphenidate, amphetamines, tetrahydrocannabinol and modafinil. Both EPs and IPs addressed topics such as autonomous decision making or issues related to fairness such as equality in test evaluation and distortion of competition. While most…
Molecular analysis of lichen-associated bacterial communities
2006
The bacterial communities associated with 11 different lichen samples (belonging to eight different species) from different habitats were investigated. The culturable aerobic-heterotrophic fraction of the bacterial communities was isolated from nine lichen samples on protein-rich and sugar-rich/N-free media. Thirty-four bacterial isolates were purified and pooled into groups (phylotypes) by analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer polymorphism. Twenty five phylotypes were identified, each comprising between one and three isolates. One isolate of each phylotype was partially sequenced and the resulting 16S rRNA gene sequences were compared in a phylogenetic analysis. Three gener…
Nonperturbative approach for the electronic Casimir-Polder effect in a one-dimensional semiconductor
2013
We present the electronic Casimir-Polder effect for a system consisting of two impurities on a one-dimensional semiconductor quantum wire. Due to the charge transfer from the impurity to a one-dimensional conduction band, the impurity states are dressed by a virtual cloud of the electron field. The attractive electronic Casimir force arises due to the overlap of the virtual clouds. The Van Hove singularity causes the persistent bound state (PBS) to appear below the band edge even when the bare impurity state energy is above the band edge. Since the decay rate of the virtual cloud of the PBS in space is small, the Casimir force can be of a very long range. While the overlap of the electronic…
Dynamical Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and surface plasmons
2013
We investigate the time-dependent Casimir-Polder potential of a polarizable two-level atom placed near a surface of arbitrary material, after a sudden change in the parameters of the system. Different initial conditions are taken into account. For an initially bare ground-state atom, the time-dependent Casimir-Polder energy reveals how the atom is "being dressed" by virtual, matter-assisted photons. We also study the transient behavior of the Casimir-Polder interaction between the atom and the surface starting from a partially dressed state, after an externally induced change in the atomic level structure or transition dipoles. The Heisenberg equations are solved through an iterative techni…
Casimir-Polder interaction between an accelerated two-level system and an infinite plate
2007
We investigate the Casimir-Polder interaction energy between a uniformly accelerated two-level system and an infinite plate with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our model is a two-level atom interacting with a massless scalar field, with a uniform acceleration in a direction parallel to the plate. We consider the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and of the radiation reaction field to the atom-wall Casimir-Polder interaction, and we discuss their dependence on the acceleration of the atom. We show that, as a consequence of the noninertial motion of the two-level atom, a thermal term is present in the vacuum fluctuation contribution to the Casimir-Polder interaction. Finally we discuss the…
Energy-level shifts of a uniformly accelerated atom between two reflecting plates
2011
We discuss the radiative level shifts of a uniformly accelerated atom moving between two infinite reflecting plates and interacting with a massless scalar field in the vacuum state. The atom, supposed to be a two-level system, accelerates in a direction parallel to the conducting plates. We evaluate separately the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction field to the energy shift of the atomic levels, and discuss their dependence on acceleration, atomic position and cavity length.
van der Waals Interaction Energy Between Two Atoms Moving With Uniform Acceleration
2013
We consider the interatomic van der Waals interaction energy between two neutral ground-state atoms moving in the vacuum space with the same uniform acceleration. We assume the acceleration orthogonal to their separation, so that their mutual distance remains constant. Using a model for the van der Waals dispersion interaction based on the interaction between the instantaneous atomic dipole moments, which are induced and correlated by the zero-point field fluctuations, we evaluate the interaction energy between the two accelerating atoms in terms of quantities expressed in the laboratory reference frame. We find that the dependence of the van der Waals interaction between the atoms from the…
Arbitrary qudit gates by adiabatic passage
2013
We derive an adiabatic technique that implements the most general SU($d$) transformation in a quantum system of $d$ degenerate states, featuring a qudit. This technique is based on the factorization of the SU($d$) transformation into $d$ generalized quantum Householder reflections, each of which is implemented by a two-shot stimulated Raman adiabatic passage with appropriate static phases. The energy of the lasers needed to synthesize a single Householder reflection is shown to be remarkably constant as a function of $d$. This technique is directly applicable to a linear trapped ion system with $d+1$ ions. We implement the quantum Fourier transform numerically in a qudit with $d=4$ (defined…
