Defense versus Opulence? An Appraisal of the Malthus-Ricardo 1815 Controversy on the Corn Laws

2015

This article proposes a rational reconstruction of the arguments of Malthus and Ricardo in their 1815 essays, Grounds of an Opinion and An Essay on Profits, whereby a policy of free corn trade was repudiated and endorsed, respectively. Malthus envisaged defense and (trade-induced) opulence as two mutually alternative options and, if required to make a choice, he had no hesitation in choosing the former. By contrast, Ricardo excluded any such trade-off, arguing that even in the case of war or poor domestic harvest, foreign agricultural countries would be seriously damaged if they opted for restrictions on their corn exports to Great Britain.

Soil microbial biomass carbon and fatty acid composition of earthworm Lumbricus rubellus after exposure to engineered nanoparticles

2014

none 6 no First Online: 14 October 2014 The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) on soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and on earthworm Lumbricus rubellus. An artificial soil was incubated for 4 weeks with earthworms fed with vegetable residues contaminated by NPs, consisting of Ag, Co, Ni and TiO2. After the treatments, soils were analysed for MBC and total and water soluble metal-NPs, whereas earthworms were purged for 28 days and then analysed for fatty acids (FAs) and total metal-NPs. Longitudinal sections of earthworms were investigated by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS),…

Short-term effects of wood ants (Formica aquilonia Yarr.) on soil animal community structure

1999

Abstract Wood ants are known to affect the structure of invertebrate communities in tree canopies but it is not clear whether wood ants can affect the structure of soil animal communities. To isolate the direct effects of wood ants on soil fauna, I manipulated wood ant density in a 6-week mesocosm experiment by placing mesocosms (O 14 cm, height 13.5 cm) permeable to ants either on or outside the ant trails. The mesocosms contained litter, humus, and a diverse soil fauna typical of coniferous forest. I controlled earthworm species composition and biomasses by inoculating 470 mg fresh mass of epigeic lumbricid Dendrobaena octaedra (Sav.) or Dendrodrilus rubidus (Sav.) to the mesocosms. A 15-…

Shortcut nitrification-denitrification by means of autochthonous halophilic biomass in an SBR treating fish-canning wastewater

2017

Abstract Autochthonous halophilic biomass was cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) aimed at analyzing the potential use of autochthonous halophilic activated sludge in treating saline industrial wastewater. Despite the high salt concentration (30 g NaCl L −1 ), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS), removal efficiencies were higher than 90%. More than 95% of the nitrogen was removed via a shortcut nitrification-denitrification process. Both the autotrophic and heterotrophic biomass samples exhibited high biological activity. The use of autochthonous halophilic biomass led to high-quality effluent and helped to manage the issues related to nitrogen removal…

Modelling denitrification including the dynamics of denitrifiers and their progressive ability to reduce nitrous oxide: comparison with batch experim…

2005

Nitrous oxide contributes to the global greenhouse effect and affects the chemistry of O 3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. To define a relevant model for microbial NO 3 - and N 2 O reductions in soil and estimate the parameters involved, we propose a method combining measurements of anaerobic soil slurry and simulations of NO 3 - and N 2 O reductions, including non-enzymatic competition between NO 3 - and N 2 O as electron acceptors and the microbial dynamics of two denitrifier groups that are either able or unable to reduce N 2 O. Three models varying in the description of soil capability to reduce N 2 O through denitrification were assessed. The procedure was applied on a…

How I diagnose and treat splenic lymphomas.

2011

Abstract The incidental finding of an isolated splenomegaly during clinical assessment of patients evaluated for unrelated causes has become increasingly frequent because of the widespread use of imaging. Therefore, the challenging approach to the differential diagnosis of spleen disorders has emerged as a rather common issue of clinical practice. A true diagnostic dilemma hides in distinguishing pathologic conditions primarily involving the spleen from those in which splenomegaly presents as an epiphenomenon of hepatic or systemic diseases. Among the causes of isolated splenomegaly, lymphoid malignancies account for a relevant, yet probably underestimated, number of cases. Splenic lymphoma…

Dundaga parish oronyms (hill names) of Livonian origin in Juris Plāķis’ Latvian toponym publication

2014

Each less known addition to the collection of authentic Livonian language materials is very valuable, and a small contribution can also be made by Juris Plāķis’ publication about Latvian, i.e., Courland toponyms, among which Livonian ones can be found as well. This collection includes toponyms collected by J. Plāķis himself, toponyms from Augusts Bīlenšteins’ onomastic materials, as well as toponyms which have been sent in to the Folklore depository by pupils from different parishes. « Allianz-Arena, Orange Vélodrome & Co: zum Werbepotenzial kommerzieller Namen von Sportplätzen im deutsch-französischen Vergleich »

2021
