The Origins of Millet Cultivation (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia’s Mediterranean Area from the 13th to the 2nd Century BC

The introduction of the cultivation of millets (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia’s Mediterranean zone appears to stem from different origins which themselves hinged on their own specific historical developments. The earliest traces in the northeast, presumably of trans-Pyrenean origin, were brought to light in Bronze Age contexts (13th century BC) in Western Catalonia, notably in the Cinca River Valley. The different species of millets from southern and eastern Iberia, by contrast, come from later 10th–8th century BC contexts under Phoenician influence. En este artículo se describen las bases conceptuales de la multifuncionalidad de la agricultura, y se analiza hasta qué punto pueden servir para justificar la intervención pública en apoyo del sector. A continuación, se destacan algunos aspectos concretos que tienen que ver con la multifuncionalidad en las áreas relacionadas con la biodiversidad, el desarrollo rural y la seguridad alimentaria para, finalmente, contemplar las posibilidades que ofrecen las actuales normas de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC) a la hora de tener en cuenta las denominadas «preocupaciones no comerciales» (non-trade concerns) y, entre ellas, las relacionadas con la multifuncionalidad. ereig@uv.es

A rapid, high-throughput bacterial mutagenicity test system has been developed (MutaGen test) that detects reversions of inactivating base-pair substitutions and frameshifts in a TEM-1 class A β-lactamase (ampicillinase) gene. To quickly and sensitively detect mutagens, the system utilises a series of plasmids that contain the mutated ampicillinase gene and the mucAB operon. Inactivating mutations in the ampicillinase gene include frameshifts integrated into repetitive GC-sequences and G-runs known to be mutagenic hot-spots, and base-pair substitutions inserted in or around the β-lactamase active site.
