First observation of strong OZI rule violation in πN interactions

1996

The data of the CERN WA56 experiment that triggered the fast proton produced in the $\pi^{+}p$ and $\pi^{-}p$ interactions at beam momenta 20 GeV/c and 12 GeV/c, respectively, are used to analyse the final states $ p_{f} \phi (\omega)\pi^{\pm}$. A large excess (up to two orders of magnitude) of the $\phi/\omega$ cross sections ratio over the OZI prediction is observed.

$$N\bar N$$ annihilation at rest into five pions

1993

\(N\bar N\) annihilation at rest into five pions was studied in the ASTERIX spectrometer by stopping antiprotrons from LEAR in a H2 or D2 gas target. In\(\bar pp\) annihilations in H2 leading to the π+π−π+π−π0 final state, the invariant mass spectra of two, three, and four pions show no evidence for any new narrow states. In\(\bar pn \to \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ - \) the difference of the four pion mass spectra recoiling against a π− and those recoiling against a π+ shows a resonance-like structure (“ζ (1480)”), confirming a previous analysis with a smaller event sample. The ζ (1480) mass is shown to depend strongly on the momentum of the spectator proton. In H2, we searched fo…

Multipole strength distributions and form factors forE1,E2/E0, andE3 fromU238(e,e’f) coincidence experiments

1987

A model-independent multipole analysis of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$(e,e'f) coincidence data, taken at four momentum transfers (0.2\ensuremath{\le}${q}_{\mathrm{eff}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\le}}0.7}$ ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$; \ensuremath{\omega}=4--22 MeV) yields both E1, E2/E0, and E3 form factors and strength distributions. The E2/E0 strength distribution in the fission channel shows two distinct bumps centered at \ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\simeq}10 and 14 MeV, exhausting up to 12 MeV (19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2)% of the isoscalar E2 sum rule. The extracted form factors can be described within a hydrodynamical model by use of parameters ${c}_{\mathrm{tr}/{c}_{0}=1.2}$ and …

Forward-AngleH3e(e,e′π±)Coincident Electroproduction and the Search forΔ's in the Ground State ofH3e

1996

Forward-angle coincident electroproduction cross sections of charged pions from ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ have been measured at electron energies ${E}_{0}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}855$, 675, 600, and 555 MeV. The overall features of the data for energy transfers of $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}370$ to 430 MeV with pions detected along the momentum transfer axis are reproduced in terms of a microscopic model, including pole terms, final state rescattering and produced and preformed $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonances. Separation of the cross section into its longitudinal and transverse parts was performed at ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex…

NADPH-diaphorase activity of nitric oxide synthase in the olfactory bulb: co-factor specificity and characterization regarding the interrelation to N…

1994

The neuronal form of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) synthesizes the messenger molecule nitric oxide (NO). In addition to NO formation, nNOS exhibits a so-called NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity. This study focused on the characterization of NADPH-d activity with regard to NO formation in the rat olfactory bulb. In this area of the brain pronounced staining is localized in discrete populations of neuronal somata and in olfactory glomeruli. Diaphorase staining combined with demonstration of nNOS by polyclonal antibodies revealed that NADPH-d activity of neuron somata is associated with nNOS immunoreactivity. It is concluded that neuron somata exhibit NADPH-d activity of nNOS. NAD…

Blood N-3 fatty acids increase after consumption of an enriched yoghurt

2011

The effects of a n-3 fatty acid (FA) enriched yoghurt on blood FA were investigated in 23 females and 23 males, who consumed 2 yoghurts/day for 6 weeks, providing 64 mg EPA and 74 mg DHA. Blood samples were collected before treatment, at the beginning, end, and after wash out. Yoghurt intakes increased blood EPA (35%) and DHA (11%) with different trends of changes in women versus men. In conclusion, the daily consumption of a yoghurt containing small amounts of n-3 FA significantly increases blood n-3 FA, providing a useful approach to reach the recommended intakes in populations.

A Circular Economy Approach to Fish Oil Extraction

2019

Fish oil rich in polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids is extracted in high yield from anchovy filleting waste using d-limonene as green biosolvent in a simple solid-liquid extraction performed by mechanically stirring and maceration followed by limonene removal via evaporation under reduced pressure. As limonene is renewably obtained from waste orange peel, this method closes the materials cycle and establishes a circular economy process to obtain high quality fish oil from biowaste available worldwide in several million t/year amount. Significant economic, social and environmental benefits are anticipated.

Efficacy of combined treatment with pasireotide, pegvisomant and cabergoline in an acromegalic patient resistant to other treatments: a case report

2018

Abstract Background The approach to acromegalic patients with persistent acromegaly after surgery and inadequate response to first-generation somatostatin receptor ligands (SRLs) should be strictly tailored. Current options include new pituitary surgery and/or radiosurgery, or alternative medical treatment with SRLs high dose regimens, pegvisomant (PEG) as monotherapy, or combined therapy with the addition of PEG or cabergoline to SRLs. A new pharmacological approach includes pasireotide, a second-generation SRL approved for patients who do not adequately respond to surgery and/or for whom surgery is not an option. No reports on efficacy and safety of combined therapy with pasireotide and p…
